I had my doubts since the announcment of 5v5, I was worried about what would happen to Tank synergies, but after playing OW2 for 5 Seasons I can confidently say its way worse than that.
We not only lose the Tank Synergies, but just a lot of Teamplay as a whole. 5v5 often really does feel like deathmatch where everyone runs off to do their own thing, there is no structure in “Teamfights” if you can still call them that.
It really does cater to the casual player who just hops on once a week to play the game, but it even casuals can have fun in 6v6, OW1 proved it, there was no reason to change it from a casual players perspective.
Add to that, that the only tank has all the pressure, which means if the tank dies the fight is basically lost. You dont have anyone to back your team up and try to clutch after you die, your Raid Boss is dead, you lost.
Speaking of Raid Boss, tanks did get overbuffed hard, which means yes in 1v1s against DPS or Supps the tank usually wins, which is not good imo. In OW1 tanks were reasonably strong, you could 1v1 them with many heroes, in OW2 not so much. And yes they are OP in 1v1s, but in “Teamfights” they have to take everything in, they cant make many mistakes or the fight is lost, its just not fun or rewarding to play it in 5v5.
Also, Widow is still dominating even after the nerfs, I would much rather have more protection and more ways to counter widow and she gets her range and more HP back in exchange.
Im just sad that after waiting so long for my favourite game ever to get content again, its doesnt feel like my favourite game anymore, its bland, its lost all its competitiveness, its a shell of what it once was.
6v6 was very balanceable, the old devs just werent trying to. They tried to get rid of Goats and 2x Shield by buffing the “Counters” instead of nerfing the things that made the comps possible (AOE Healing for GOATS and Shield Health/Shield Uptime on Poke Tanks for 2x Shield). The current balance team does seem more competent, they patch faster and make impactful changes, they could probably handle 6v6 pretty well.
If OW would have gotten the same things as 5v5 (meaning, less CC, Orisa Rework, new heroes, new modes, etc.) then it would be as popular or even more popular than OW is now and I stand by that.
But for now, I will play OW way less than I did from 2016 - 2022, even through graveyard season i had more fun than now. Its “just a game” but it really does break my heart that i cant enjoy it anymore.
