What supports have to be paying attention to with regards to their positionality, decision-making, game sense is different than other roles, just as it is different for tanks, etc. Someone who is great at DPS in both mechanical aim and game sense can still be a pile of bull at understanding how to get the most value out of their kit when playing as support. It’s not hard to tell when a DPS main has queued support or tank for a faster queue time.
i was trying d.va out in some games (since curious people saying she sucks) and yea i noticed my supports in some games being chased and hounded by hammond all game. was wondering why i had to run a lot as d.va since i was trying to frontline since my tank buddy was roadhog (hiding in rooms trying to be a hook dps guy)… guess d.va and hog dont match up well even tho the classic trailer shows them in love
so basically as support you have more divers on you… no more free rides i guess
People shouldn’t healbot, but it is a matter of degree. A lot of supports have the ability to choose between using an ability to heal or using it for some kind of utility or damage. This includes things like amping healing vs. amping speed, using Ana nade to heal vs. to anti, healing beam vs. damage boost, healing orb vs. damage orb, etc. You definitely should not always use these abilities to heal, but it definitely is sometimes the right decision to do the healing option. Better supports will optimize that decision-making more, in order to optimize their value. In 6v6, the team takes more damage, and that noticeably alters the optimal calculus. The optimal play tilts more towards the healing option than it does in 5v5. And I think a lot of people (me included) find that less fun, since a lot of the utility abilities are the most fun things for support heroes (at least in my opinion—obviously fun is subjective). Feeling like you should be doing the less fun thing more often than before is naturally going to be less fun, even if you definitely haven’t stopped doing the more fun stuff.
I mean that’s a beast the Devs brought upon themselves, there’s a reason the early maps are designed with a lot of health packs and walled off corridors that promote 1v1’s and flanking. A lot of the nostalgic maps that aren’t in rotation anymore are more setup for DPS duels because that’s what put OW on the map and the hero fantasy that people fell in love with. People love to hate on DPS mains but there’s good reason they were the majority of the cast. Majority of people wanted to play them, and still do. No one get’s off work where intrinsically you are basically being a corporate punching bag (Tank/support) all day and their power fantasy is to do the same thing. It’s why they kept power creeping support and Tank to be healing Dps and Mitigation Dps. Heck the most popular tanks in OW were just the mitigation Dps heros like reworked DVA, Winston in the backline, full charge Zarya, or team wipe Rein.
