OW 2 Sound Effects in OW 1 (resolved just headphone issues)

So when I logged on today I noticed everything sounded a little off and it wasn’t until I got into a comp match I noticed that all the sound effects were different, it sounded a lot like what they showed us at the Blizzcon preview. I am assuming this is some sort of bug and likely will be patched out because there is no patch notes about it and it only happens when I am using headphones. So I went through each hero in the practice range and recorded what all of their abilities sound like.

Is anyone else having the same thing happening and what do you guys think of the potential new sounds?

Edit: So turns out my headphones were screwed up because of the wire being damaged and it caused all of the audio to be distorted, so there likely was those changes that were made previously with the audio being based on the environment but no new sounds xD

Yes, and tbh, I hate it. The dynamic sound system is not pleasant for OW1 gun sounds.

Lijiang tower market point is like nails on a chalkboard when playing sym

I didn’t notice a lot of difference in the video maybe I’m just deaf.

Yeah they updated the audio system to use at least some of the new dynamic audio they showed off a while ago. i think it was some time around Summer Games.

OW2 is the same codebase (“engine”) as OW1

how else can you explain the constant amount of new bugs if OW1 is in maintenance mode?

Blizz: “Hey so we decided to record some irl guns and their echoes for the sound redesign of overwatch two :D”

Me: “…but, why?”

Like concidering the sound design in ow1 was already absolutely amazing. im not sure why this was even necessary concidering the weapons are hyper sci-fi and almost toy-looking. Who looked at overwatch and thought “hm yes, the weapons needs to be more realistic”.

But yeah as for the changes applied to ow1, i was once hidden in one of the cargos/caves on route 66 as soldier 76 and the echoes his rifle made, it sounded like the volume was amplified by 300%, jfc.

It’s corporate budgeting you need to pay everyone right and look like doing stuff.

The only time I notice is in tunnels, and it sounds very weird.

I know it’s cliche, but I do think there’s a middle ground between realistic and what just sounds nice even if artificial.

It’s horrible. Clearly it was meant to modify the new sounds, Sym sounds horrible in Lijang market on the point. Sounds like your both of your ears are plugged. It’s grating and they should yeet this audio system out of OW1

They put in a really awful sounding accoustic reverb during indoor areas. It sounds like one side of my headphones goes dead

i think the indoor echoes need to be massively nerfed, they’re op and i can’t hear anything over them sometimes. it makes me leave cover just to avoid being deaf to danger

I’d suggest somebody make a “sound change feedback” thread. And be very specific about what is not good about it, and how it can be improved.

Clearly this is a rough draft at the moment. But you only got a while to give feedback on it.

Generally it seems like their reverb is a bit too high.

Oh the sounds… The damn engine is broken. I often have McCree walking 1 meter away from me and I can’t hear his footsteps at all, meanwhile mercy sounds like shes stomping the ground .

Then another thing is sounds just fade to mute just by walking a few meters away from the source .

Then the reverb is totally off.
Try and shoot from inside that train wreck at the start of spawn in Route 66 attack.

Horrible sound engine .

I think what happened is that they somehow mixed few things from different development branches haha. Things like that can happen and I think we will see more of these things when we are getting closer to the OW2 release. (In a better state of course)

they are still only testing these sounds , doesn’t mean the same sound we will get in OW2. OW1 is just a PTR for OW2 right now

TBH, it sound worse than before…especially in route 66.

Well the design was good. But they still went above and beyond.

It can always be improved.

Sound design is an often overlooked and under appreciated part of a game.

Take brig’s Inspire for example. The little sound effect you get for healing. It’s so important to making Brig fun. Without it, it really feels like you have little impact on the game. Every sound matters and making them better is always a +.

Ahm, call me crazy, but it sounds the same as always to me?

I thought my earphones got broken, there is a tunel on the left side on route 66 where the sound is horrible

Load up a Route 66 map, Custom Games is easiest.
Pick the Attacking team. Pick a hero with a gun, I prefer Soldier:76.

Fire your Pulse Rifle and also a Helix Rocket in spawn. Walk outside, go immediately to the far left with the broken down train section that forms the “ramp” to the high-ground. Once you’re inside it, fire your Pulse Rifle and Helix Rocket again.
It’s definitely the same tech used in OW2’s showcase.
