Overwatch Tech Support Help

Hi Overwatch tech support! I have an issue that has been ongoing for 3 months now that I have contacted you guys about many times with problems with server regions. I’m having an issue where I am being filtered into these specific server regions, “Gsg1”(Singapore), “Las1” (Los Angeles or Las Vegas), and “Syd2” (OCE) when I should be located into the Chicago server under the name “ORD1”. I live in Ohio and I have opened 7 tickets with blizzard support where I was given some recommendations on how to fix my issue and every one of them didn’t work. I then opened a ticket and told them the issue isn’t resolved and was told its on an ISP level and to contact them. I then contacted my ISP and they reset the modem I.P, troubleshot with me and the issue still isn’t resolved. They specifically said it is an internal issue at blizzard/overwatch and said everything looks good on their end. I then contacted Blizzard AGAIN with my issue saying I tried everything, I’ve scrolled through posts to find a solution, I’ve tried all the trouble shooting, I’ve reset my IP on my computer AND had my service provider reset the IP of the router/modem, I went out of my way to purchase another router to see if that fixes it, and I’ve even tried reinstalling. I’ve done everything and was told my last ditch effort to getting this fixed is to “keep pushing this on the official Overwatch Technical Support Forum.” -Game Master Belnysmos. So I am here, the problem still is affecting me and my bf who play overwatch on a daily basis, and I was essentially told by support that I cant do anything else except spam the forums to see if the dev team can get this fixed. Please dev team, can I get this fixed before the magical girl season. Playing on a constant 170+ ping is really unfun :frowning:

Hi, I’m a volunteer. Just as an FYI, this forum is for player-to-player troubleshooting and is not a direct contact point for the staff or developers.

Are you using a smaller ISP? Some have not fully updated their routing tables since the recent DDoS attacks. If you use a VPN to Chicago, do you get connected to the Chicago server?

My ISP is T mobile, they said they are strictly US based and I should not be routed into those servers. I would say that the DDOS attacks that recently effected blizzard would have done anything to effect me as this issue has been on going for 3 months. They even said there were no issues checking to see if packets were lost enroute to Chicago servers. We even checked to see if my phone hotspot would fix the issue and maybe it was a router issue. When I did use Nord VPN in chicago to see if I was filtered into the correct server, It still was pushing me into servers out of my region (same ones as previously mentioned). Also i had no clue this was a player to player contact point. All I was told was it was “…the space where devs post about server-side updates, and it also helps them track the scale of these types of issues. If they determine a change or fix is needed, that’s where the resolution would appear.”

Unfortunately, mobile networks acting as a home ISP are still the same as using tethering on a mobile phone with your computer, despite all the clever marketing. The modem T-Mobile provides is basically a giant mobile phone in a box. These services rely on line-of-sight to complete a connection between your home and the tower, then connect to the internet using other towers or satellites.

Mobile networks, like T-Mobile 5G Home Internet, aren’t as stable as landline broadband and are not optimized for gaming. In many cases, your gaming traffic will be deprioritized by the mobile carrier in favor of people using social media or streaming videos. This deprioritization might be causing you to get routed to a lot of different servers outside your region. (Source: Me. I worked in telecom for over a decade.)

I’m not in Ohio, but if I use a VPN to Cleveland while connected to landline broadband, Overwatch places me on the Chicago server. This further leads me to believe it’s a symptom of the type of connection being used.

For the reasons I’ve mentioned, 5G internet doesn’t meet Blizzard’s system requirements for Overwatch 2. I realize that other internet options aren’t always available, so there may be nothing you can do to immediately correct the issue. However, the connection quality requirements have remained the same since Overwatch 1 launched.

Well my next question is what changed in the past 3 months? We’ve had this for a year and no issue but 3 months ago that all changed…Is there anything I can do to be put back in the proper region? My last resort would be blocking the IP’s on EVERY server that overwatch provides but that seems like a very long, tedious, and confusing process considering I’d need to grab every ip port for every server and region

I believe that would be a question for T-Mobile. But if I had to guess, more network congestion for their network since they’re really pushing home internet service sales.

It’s quite curious that a VPN is not resolving the problem. I’m wondering if something isn’t configured correctly. I’m in the Southeast US. If I set a VPN to Sydney, I get placed on the Sydney server.

The IPs for the match servers are not static to protect against DDoS attacks, so I don’t recommend doing that. Only the authentication servers (login process) remain the same.
