Cope harder
Activeplayer.io claims OW2 is down to ~711k monthly players. Hourly number is at 178k which is about normal for the game.
Guess you didnāt. thegamer com/overwatch-2-damage-tank-queue-times/
There are other indicators the player population is small - just look at the number of games between seeing the same players again. Itās tiny. Within about 3 games I am recycling people I played against 3 games ago. As it gets to off-peak times Iām seeing the same people 2 games in a row and they discuss the last game in chat.
This is very different from December when I started playing where I didnāt really see the same people - well not soon enough to notice. Now even at peak time I start to notice them pretty quickly.
Other indicators include how long it takes to backfill a game, and whether you get backfilled back into a game you left in QP. Both of these point to very few players now compared to January.
The population has had massive shrinkage compared to the start of the year.
Misunderstand google trends harder
A drop from 35 million, that could be right. Curious though how they get that data when blizzard hides all of it.
Now you embarrassed yourself using activeplayer. Go read their description of how they calculate player numbers. Then read it again. It is all nonsense. They make up a number. They have no source to calculate it. They basically admit it in their description. Using them as a source is not going to make you seem like an intelligent part of the conversation unfortunately.
Google trends is much more likely to show a more accurate trend at least, if not able to show actual player numbers.
I mean they game mostly counts on people being stupid to retain players so itās not at all surprising so many players have left. Like thereās a lot of stupid people yeah but all it takes is a middle school education to examine a profile do some basic math and see half of everyone in all your ranked games are boosted af. People going from silver to masters for winning 9 games, gold to diamond with a 20% win rate. Nobody with a brain can take this game seriously competitively and itās what drove me away.
If you call those who stay and still play ow addicts, I think this is better than being content who*e. For me personally, idc what is shop and what are these skins, events, pve and so on. For me there is a game, where I can play competitive in the highest ranks and casually smurfing in low ranks, thatās it. I like ow2 better than ow1. Almost nothing has been changed, but q time is no more 7-16 mins across the ranks, most of the time it is insta q unless you play in top500. There is no more stupid goats, brig, doubleshield and many other things I dislike from ow1. I do not care about portraits or any progression but domination over my opponents. And I think fps shooters are meant to be for that. Why do ppl constatnly need this dose of content, hype and so on? The game is still great, players are spoiled, thatās it. Ofc there could be a bit faster balance updates, new heroes bringing spice, but mostly I do not care that much about that all. Thanks that I can press play button, the game finds me ppl to play with and vs and provide me with so many interesting and intensive aiming mechanics + interactions, dynamical gameplay that no other game can provide. I appreciate that.
And how do you think they were able to obtain these fast queues when OW1 was never able to?
Like you have a better methodology? You donāt. Activeplayer seems to be using packet sniffers or similar to track connections to known Blizzard game servers.
The best you can do is compare activeplayer numbers month by month and see the % change. As long as the relative accuracy stays about the same, you can measure trends.
OW2 has had 30d player numbers as high as around 1.4 million (no not 35 million lol).
Overwatch is not a great game to watch alhonesty.
Just in case you are unware āTHEY CANCELLED ITā .
Nearly 170,000 avg live player count is too low . Total accounts count does not matter .
Interesting chart. It doesnāt look like itās dying to me. Itās just failing to spike in viewers after Feb 8th, 2023. There were nice spikes in Dec 9th 2022, Dec 27th 2022, Jan 12th 2023, and Feb 8th 2023 but seems to have stopped after that.
So Iām guessing kiriko, ramattra, and other content updates were pretty well received by the playerbase. But lifeweaver isnāt being well received for some reason, probably because heās pretty boring to play.
Maybe itās not just the lifeweaver, but the lack of other content + bad rep from recent announcement of cancellation of PvE might be playing a role in lack of viewer spike in the last 3 months.
people have to stop using twitch as a metric for player count
Whatever the relationship is between the two, we can maybe assume that that relationship was the same during the content draught. And viewers for OW2 being the same as for OW1ās content draught is hardly good.
Perhaps Blizzardās idea is to extract more money from this playerbase. Shop prices sure indicate that.
Hey, but you have pride!
Iām kidding this company is a joke.
I wouldnāt say that. Not everyone playing the game care about Twitch streaming or the championship/leagues. I sometimes like to watch streams, but I generally prefer to play the games myself and in that aspect, itās very much alive. Matchmaking sometimes is a total miss with one team being super hard stacked, but in general itās a good experience with very little waiting pretty much no matter what class you play. I used to play Support non stop and sometimes Tank, but only with Hog. Recently Iāve been playing DPS more and what used to be the longest waiting line is now 2 minutes tops in worst waiting scenario, but in general itās just few seconds and Iām dropped into a match again.
What annoys me the most is the fact that Blizzard dropped PvE. These events were quite fun in OW1 for seasonal events and could be so much more. But they decided to scrape it which makes the whole existence of OW2 questionable. I like PvP, but sometimes I just want to play with humans along against Ai enemies. Itās fun in Killing Floor 2, itās fun in Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, would be fun in OW2. But now there will be none.
I agree viewership doesnāt equal playerbase. But this is definitely further evidence that Blizzardās idea of working with streamers to find new players doesnāt work.
The difference is - the viewership used to be very high for Overwatch, over 1 million actually it was insane.
Those numbers never appeared for games like Football Manager or DbD in the first place.
So I would say yes, the amount of people who watch Overwatch is kind of an indicator for the amount of people wo play it.
