So…let’s look at all the major competitive titles.
As much as this game sells itself to being accessible, it’s also selling itself as a competitive game with the Overwatch League. But here’s the most reliable images I could find for each of the most competitive games on the market. Titles for each game will be below the images.

CSGO USED to use the square hitboxes - but has switched to a more accurate model
I can’t find any images depicting the modern warfare hitboxes, but here’s a video showing how tight they are. Maybe an inch off of the body for the smallest character model - and more importantly - identical for all characters. I don’t expect Overwatch to try that though with their giant character models like Rein and Hog.
Warframe
Rainbow Six Siege has changed hitboxes and how they work multiple times - getting better and better. This was the only image I could find back when they were 2.2.1 - and it doesn’t show different damage areas - but it is smaller than the character models to exemplify padding of clothes/armor - I think they’ve since fixed this to be more well defined to the character models.
The video below goes into more detail.
I will concede that Overwatch is a fast paced game - and probably can’t be made with hitboxes that are identical to the wire frame, but it feels like the hitboxes we have on the live client are comically large when you compare to these other games - particularly for the heroes that are medium size or smaller.
Then there’s Quake - whose hitboxes are purposely made big because the characters move ridiculously fast (like pharah concussion-propelled speeds almost the entire game). This is the only major competitive title I found where the hitboxes are comparable to Overwatch.
As I said in the original post though - I’m not looking for them to make the hitboxes perfect, just see how things would work if they were much tighter than they currently are. I’m also not pretending that this would be able to happen in a vacuum, as abilities and other things like projectile hitboxes would need to be changed to help the flow of the game.
[please feel free to correct me if i’m wrong on any of these given examples, I’m not trying to be an analyst in this - just using the best tools at my disposal as found through google searches]
