I have been playing Overwatch for about 10 years, and I have been suffering from a significant optimization problem since this January. After the latest updates, I experienced severe frame drops, especially in 1% low FPS. I even upgraded my PC from a Ryzen 7 5800X + RTX 3060 to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti, but the performance improvement was far smaller than expected for this level of hardware (avg FPS 300~400, 1% low 200), and the frame drops continue.
The main cause appears to be a CPU bottleneck rather than a lack of GPU power. In Quick Play, GPU usage stays around 40%, while in the training range 80% (stable 600 fps). This suggests that in real matches the GPU is not being fully utilized because another part of the game pipeline is limiting performance.
I do not think this is simply a problem with my hardware. Blizzard has already acknowledged some FPS-related issues in official patch notes, including fixes for FPS drops when matches receive a backfill. Recent reports on the official Overwatch forums also describe very similar problems after Season 20 and later updates, including worse average FPS, poor 1% low FPS, and heavy drops during actual matches even on high-end systems such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5070 Ti.
I question whether Blizzard is fully aware of how serious this optimization issue has become. For players who mainly use high refresh rate monitors, this kind of performance degradation has a major impact on gameplay. I hope this post reaches the Overwatch development team and leads to a fast improvement.
