Overwatch opens on wrong monitor

I have a split monitor setup. Main screen (that I want to play on) is Monitor 1. Generally Overwatch defaults to Monitor 1 as it should, but sometimes there will be a period over a week or more where it decides to exclusively open on Monitor 2 - EVEN WHEN that monitor is turned off.

I can’t make sense of it, especially because it fluctuates between which screen the game prefers. Right now I am in a period where it always opens on Monitor 2 (despite it being turned off), and I am sure that after some weeks or a month it will revert to automatically open on Monitor 1 - which is always set as the default monitor.

I never change my Windows settings, I use my pc for work every single day and I can’t find any pattern in this. I can only observe that it has happened quite a few times now over the past year, where in periods the game will simply just decide that Monitor 2 is its default opening screen. No other application does this, only Overwatch - so I can rule out the fact that it’s general screen settings related.

Any thoughts?

In Overwatch, look in settings and select the monitor instead of “best match.”

This is literally what I’m doing every single time. I select monitor 1. Then when it percists, I try selecting best match, just to double check if both options cause the same issue: they do.

I don’t know how to further explain this, I have played the game for 6 whole years now and I know the video settings inside out. It’s not a settings issue.

And to be sure there aren’t misunderstandings; I am able to switch back Overwatch to the right monitor in the settings. That’s not the issue. The issue is that the game constantly defaults to open on the wrong monitor even when said monitor is turned off, and every single time I have to set up that monitor (its a touch drawing pad) and then go into the game there and adjust the settings to switch to the other screen. So while I am able to get the game working on the right screen, it still defaults back to the wrong screen the next time I open the game which makes no sense to me.

If anything I can provide in terms of technical data will help then let me know and I will send it.

I’ve seen this happen a lot with drawing pads. I believe the last time it was investigated, they found it to be a Windows problem with how the screens were organized (it was changing in the background somehow), but ultimately recommended unplugging the drawing pad to prevent the issue.
