Now I know there are plenty of applications available for Linux to make games like overwatch run.
However now that Valve has made great strides in making windows games run on linux such as adding photon directly to steam; and Google soon to be adding native Linux app support to Chromebook. It makes me wonder if Activision or Blizzard is going to try making any moves to support the OS as well. Especially if they can get ahead of the curve and have Linux support before ubisoft’s uplay or EA’s Origin.

I really doubt it. They develop games for sheer volume of sales and the Linux userbase is so small in comparison to macOS and NT that they’re probably not all that fussed with porting it.

You could try running it with WineHQ.

I support the idea, but realistically I doubt it. They don’t even support Apple which would likely bring them more sales than Linux. Linux is also more difficult to support reliably because of the variety of the platform.
I personally think it would be great to support both platforms. But the amount of additional resources needed to port, maintain, and test in Mac plus multiple distros of Linux would be a lot. It probably doesn’t work out financially to add that support to a game already 2+ years old.

That’s assuming they have to make it for all the disros, they could just stick to the same one that Google is basing Chromebook Linux app support from, and be a stone throw from tapping into the Chromebook market. To be honest Linux apps are easy to port between the distros down to where users can do it themselves in some cases.
To be honest, it’s probably less about the programming and more about the testing and bug fixing. And while some people might argue that they should Focus on Ubuntu others might say Chrome OS or Fedora or something else. Do they limit support to Gnome or allow KDE and Xfce desktop environments?
It’s just a lot of different things to test against and ultimately support or actively choose not support.
Maybe they say it only works on Ubuntu 18 running Gnome and only support Nvidia cards on Linux to reduce the variables, but then it’s really restrictive which is the antithesis of the spirit of using Linux in the first place.
Run Windows on Linux. Easy.
very unlikely to happen, blizzard probably cant justify developing for 5 API’s instead of the 3 they currently are. Apple use their own API now and that is probably why there is no Mac client. DX11 PS4 and XboxDX11 is already a lot of work.
Considering they refuse to support Mac, I doubt it. Especially since I’m pretty sure Mac is used more than Linux.
Personally I do already run it on Linux through wine, you guys really think that Zinfandel of all people doesn’t know about wine. Just wanted to have a discussion about it considering some of their competitors have made big jumps in supporting the platform out right, and since the tech market is moving more and more toward being open source friendy.
I’m guessing the reason they won’t do it is because Blizzard use their own game engine which I presume is reliant on DirectX and Windows APIs, at least for the PC version. But if they ever decide to support macOS I’m pretty sure Linux will come with it for free as well.
