Overwatch Needs Fire

It may not be the biggest loss in the world, but the Fire System was really good for the game, something OW did better than anyone else, and re-implementing it would be incredibly easy.

Don’t let this be yet another mistake for Overwatch 2 for absolutely no reason.

We do plan on revisiting the Fire system in the future, as it can provide excitement and positive feedback around awesome plays made by you or your teammates.

But POTG is still around and that feature has barely worked throughout its history.

It’s FAR from as important as you’re making it out to be, lol, but it’s still one of the few positive reinforcement tools for support players when they got a nice nade with god assists or db’d the right target etc. It does feel great, but it’s not important to the game overall. Not saying I don’t want it back, it should be reworked to be more universal for supports tho, maybe allowing them to be on fire for better and plays as well.

Yeah, imagine trying to give more information to the players for who is doing well and removing the one feature that actually does that :joy:

You don’t think the scoreboard does that…?

The scoreboard doesn’t give you an idea who is doing well at the moment.
One may have been doing well until they switched to another hero. The scoreboard won’t reflect that until the very end of the match.

actually i really like the fire system as well it’s hard to be toxic about being on fire and it just feels good

Yeah, but then we wouldn’t have God’s gift of that Torbjorn on Hanamura, his corpse rolling off the edge, with a Turret 4K in the kill-feed.

Turns out it seems like we had a proper skill system all this time.

I don’t touch on this in the video, but I really, really hope when they say this, they genuinely mean it will come back, and in a meaningful way (something akin to what I mention during the video near the end).

Knowing OW tho, the vague “plan on revisiting” we got is disheartening to me.

As a positive, they did record new lines for it in OW2, so I am baffled why they removed it at all. hopefully it was just to work on the newer version of it.

Frankly, I think it should be left intact. It’s positive feedback that improves personal experience for someone when they do well.

Agreed, Scoreboard is better than medals but removal of the fire system will hurt. People on fire especially on longer times are the ones who are carrying the game.

i mean, that makes sense
but what else does it do? besides show everyone the obvious

“Fire” system is incredibly misleading, because it’s based on “fire points”, which are granted for kills, but also for assists. Stuff that is very easy to do, such as staying on Speed song as Lucio, also grants Fire points, as well as focus firing tanks. You get fire points based on % damage done to a tank, up to 100 fire points. So if massive damage is happening, vs massive healing, EVERYONE gets to be on fire. You get on fire, you get on fire, everyone gets on fire!

Stupid system, rly glad it’s gone. The amount of times braindead players go like “look who is on fire” while literally getting hard carried is too much already.

Exactly this. Because not everyone seems to have common sense and knows who is doing all the work. Try to convince someone in 5v5 that the hanzo is such a big problem even tho he has less kills and elims than the 76.

tbf, we have been trying to say this for years and people dont listen

I don’t understand this take at all.

I get that fire is based on fire points, I uh, I detail that during the video. I get that you get fire for shooting tanks, but given the values you get for killing a tank, and that your idea of focus fire or staying on speed is not how every fight plays out, I don’t really understand your argument. I never said fire was perfect, and if you actually payed attention to what I said, I criticize it for sometimes being misleading, but it is leagues ahead of any other system for tracking contribution.

I’ve actually seen the “everyone gets on fire” argument before, but the logic on that argument falls apart like instantly if you think about it. The only reason I could even conceive people subscribing to that thought process is if the only time you’ve ever thought about fire is near overtime. If you actually pay attention to it during matches, people are only on fire about 10% of the time, and YES, the amount of fire definitely does vary per player. Of the matches I’ve actually gone back and tracked, it is very rare to see two players end with the same amount of time on fire.

This is misleading. Fire is granted for these things, but A: you SHOULD be rewarded for getting an assist, and B: *you already do not garner much fire FOR assists anyway.

I uh, I literally address Lucio as garnering slightly too much fire briefly.

and finally

I think the times someone on fire has been getting carried by someone not on fire are very few and far inbetween.

thats just a bad take friend

I would say, more often than not, Fire system IS misleading. The examples I can give are nearly endless but just to give a few:

  1. Mercy beam prioritization is very key but healing alone as Mercy gives you few “fire points”. Dmg boosting a person landing their shots gives you the most, but it’s also mostly out of your control whether they land shots. Getting Rez off both depends on where the person died and how much help your team will give with the Rez. All of these give “fire points” but are mostly not your credit.

  2. “initiating” is one of the hardest tasks in the game and can be done by several heroes, like Winston, Tracer etc. There is value in depositioning enemies, and also forcing some initial cooldowns, but these actions don’t give you “fire points”.

  3. it is FAR easier to be on fire on an amazing team than be on fire on a bad team. When everyone is potatoing, you struggle to do your job too because they focus you more, peel you out faster etc.

  4. different heroes have different difficulty in reaching “on fire”. Heroes like Reinhardt are very easy to be on fire with. IF Rein is a good pick into the enemy comp, all you need to do is basically hold M1 and shield yourself at the right time. Heroes like Tracer, in contrast, are hard to be on fire, because you need to do an “initial round” of baiting CDs, then maybe fall back to your team, and THEN go for the kill. Typically of these 3 actions, only getting the kill gives you “fire points”, you don’t get fire points for shooting a Roadhog and forcing his vape, even though that might save your teammates.

Overall I could give other examples but this gives a picture. I will generally agree over a VERY large number of games, being on fire maybe gives a clue as to who is a good player, but over 1, 2, 10 games, it’s often grounds for not swapping and being toxic to the team “I’m on fire so it means I’m doing ma job”, which is why I’m glad it’s gone.

Also, idk if you’ve ever played OW at high level in recent seasons, but generally in high elo you are “meant to do a specific thing” on every hero. For example, let’s say you play Rein, Dva, Tracer and 3 other heroes. As a Tracer, your job vs most comps will be generally to close flanks, bait cooldowns, annoy tanks and whoever is vulnerable, because you don’t have synergy with your tanks. You might not end up getting a lot of kills as Tracer, but the fact that the enemy won’t sneak on flanks as much means your team can have a better game.

On the other hand, let’s say you have Ball, Dva, Tracer and 3 other heroes. Then, as Tracer, it makes more sense to dive at the same time as your Ball, and if you get kills, you might end up being on fire more. So are you a better Tracer because you are on fire more when you get a Ball? Doesn’t make any sense to me.

It’s time that after 6 years, people learn to judge how every hero is MEANT TO be played. This has nothing to do with fire points, it’s more about doing the play that can give you the most value based on your team’s picks, enemy team’s picks, and enemy team’s positioning overall. Doing the right play is what is key, stats, fire points etc. generally follow.

The On Fire system should return. And heroes that are ON FIRE should actually have some customisable ‘fire/effect’ type glow (through BattlePass Unlocks, because obvs) that highlight the moment. This should decay at a reasonable enough rate that these effects are fairly scarce, but not so fast that they can’t be enjoyed.

Imagine all the ways the Fire System could be customised for fun.

[Fire Effect - Blossom Trail]
[Fire Effect - Demon Aura]
[Fire Effect - Lightning Fists]

And so on…

People would need to be able to ‘On/Off/Low/High’ them in the menus for performance, I guess. But I think that dopamine hit off the back of a good teamfight shift is important!
