Overwatch is the best game for cheaters

How can anyone possibly provide proof when they’re playing the game the instant the accusations are made? You’re not making a whole lot of sense.

Yeah but this isn’t a government, it’s a large software company. Having worked at/for some of those over the past 15 years, I can say with absolute certainty that if any part of software design ever seems to be cleverly evil and nefarious, it is not. In reality it is actually just a combination of: cost-cutting, incompetence, outsourcing, and “ship it yesterday, fix it tomorrow” product management.

Blizzard made Overwatch as quickly and cheaply as possible, with the goal of making it work on as many machines as possible. That’s how all software companies work. We are now experiencing the consequences of those decisions, and I think it may be impossible to fix the fundamental design flaws that enable widespread cheating. It’s the old parable about building a house on sand.

Uhm… you simply provide a video recording of the match. If you claim someone is cheating then there is a reason for doing so. At some point during the match there was one or more events that led to you landing on the conclusion that someone is cheating. A video containing exactly what you saw and heard for the entire match provides everyone else with the exact same information you had, which would allow others to draw their own conclusion from the same data.

Such evidence is critical for determining whether you actually faced a cheater or it you’re just inexperienced enough to tell how good a player is.

Well actually ow is focused on way more then just aim

Aimbotters will find ow the hardest game to play in as it requires a lot more then just aim

There are also a ton of people who just accuse people of cheating when they are loosing the game.

I have way to often see someone crying wolf, but I yet have to meet a single cheater in the game. I have seen a few obvious youtube videos, but it never happened to me.

Yes, and that’s another hallmark of a cheater – they’re terrible. The aimbotting Widowmaker who is a statue on a far ledge with no cover is so common it’s practically a cliche. Easy to counter-snipe, easy to sneak up on and kill. Cheaters play every round like it’s deathmatch, and that is often their undoing.

What specifics of software design? I’m talking about cheaters acquiring streamers on twitch, and using that as additional advertising.

And as for “evil and nefarious”? Try not to forget lootboxes, legalised gambling, are a part of this game.

what do cloud saves do to stop cheating?

In describing the signs of cheating, so far no one has listed any substantial element of good players or good plays. No one is talking about group comp, peeling, positioning, synergies, target selection, ult usage, counters, or anything related to teamwork or game sense. Maybe you could say that wallhacking could be really excellent sound awareness and game sense, but that’s a small part of the big picture of cheating.

And what if they can’t acquire a 1st person view of the cheater they suspect? And what if, like what happened to the author of that video I linked, they get silenced for “witch hunting”? He actually posted his findings on Reddit, only for them to be removed. Once again, you ignore the “witch hunting” policy.

So don’t start this “uhm” rhetoric with me.

I don’t know how OW was designed, I’m just guessing based on the symptoms and my experience with software development at large IT companies. If I were to guess, I would say:

  • Not protecting memory or running in a protected app mode
  • Not working with / connecting to Windows 10 API features that prevent interference or communication with other running programs
  • Not protecting the disk cache
  • Not using bounds-checking for player input data
  • Not obfuscating the code or removing strings from the binaries
  • Running too much from the client instead of the server
  • Allowing unsigned drivers

In general, sacrificing security for compatibility and performance.

I’m talking about recording the game from your perspective. If you think someone is cheating you had a reason to do so. You’ve built that based only on information from your own perspective. Others can then review your claim to see if it seems justified.

The code of conduct states you can’t call out specific people, and there’s a very good reason for this. This doesn’t mean they’re witch hunting people. The guy who made the video simply made an entire video focused on calling out a specific person. He made zero attempt to conceal the identify of the person whose footage it was. An informational video can be made without doing so.

And no, not ignoring, I just think it’s not worth addressing a conspiracy theory. Blizzard doesn’t have backroom meetings where they discuss protecting cheaters to try and sell more copies or anything like that.

*tries to misrepresent OPs conspiracy theory as toned down and rational
*Throws rationality to the wind and doubles down on the original conspiracy theory
*Cherrypicks YouTube evidence as proof of broad conspiracy
*Calls anyone who disagrees a governm - I mean Blizzard shill

Yeah, this is textbook conspiracy theorism.

You realise you often have to get a 1st person view of the cheater to get a clearer picture, yes? I mean, you’re the one clamouring about “proof”, aren’t you? It’s often quite hard to tell from a 3rd person perspective.

And why shouldn’t someone call out specific people? That’s not morality; that’s protecting cheaters. That proves Blizzard protect cheaters.

Once again, it’s not a “conspiracy theory”. It’s a shady business using shady methods. Why shouldn’t I suspect foul play?

HELLO! LOOTBOXES! Are you forgetting that?

Excuse me but there’s no octoling representation in your comment. I am offended.

Why are you correlating a government conspiracy with a shady corporation? Are you for real? “Conspiracy theory”?

This only serves to confirm my suspicions about you two. This is textbook “sociopathic manipulation”.

ive seen 2 in the 2 years this game has been out, ive been accused more times than i can count and my aim is nothing special, i pre fired down the stairs on anubis A and got called out for walling. people in this game have either been playing fps for 18 years and are shocked when someone is better than them or they dont have any experience and play in ranks that represent that

Great! So does that mean cheaters don’t exist or something? Because they do…
