Blizzard has been trying hard to keep Overwatch relevant, however with the passing of time it has fewer players each season. Overwatch League is their current attempt to create a competitive scene, however it still pales in consideration (and debate-ably respect) in regards to other tournaments. Some question the spurious attempts at balancing at the expense of fairness and the quality of characters. It’s long been known that the characters balanced the most are the popular characters, ones that have a large niche player base. The most reviled are left on the shelf to fester. The question one poses is whether this decline will continue or will Overwatch be able to return to its previous state. When you’re outshine continuously by Grand Theft Auto V on Twitch, when more players are playing your game than watching your tournament, you know something needs to change, but is Blizzard able to change it?
Wrecking Ball sucks.

The more heroes and metas that are viable at the same time, the better.

As someone who hasn’t played for a few months I must say getting two shot by widow or hanzo taking all of my hp still especially playing roadhog really has made me not want to play again. Too much damage/mobility for characters who don’t need it and not enough for the other half.

Here’s a Mercy YouTuber admitting the Mercy nerf had led to one of the most diverse and balanced metas we’ve seen in over a year.

The game imo has yet to start dying in a severe way… But it is starting to get less interest by other people.
Make an Arcade mode where everyone is in their classic, on-release form. That will definitely get some nostalgic players back.

Unfortunately, this game isn’t attracting new players at the same rate as it did in 2015/16, so the devs have to turn to other means to maintain interest.
The “honeymoon” phase is over, so to speak. We’re already very familiar with the concept of a hero shooter, and what the game can offer.
Now, for the sake of the relationship, Blizzard has to learn to spice things up in the bedroom, and for them the League is the answer. Sexy times!
But not everyone appreciates the League. Some of us (myself included!) bought the game to play it, not to watch its eSports scene. That’s where the disconnect happens between consumer and provider.

Citations please. Having an existential crisis because you don’t like
the current meta does nothing to indicate the game is in some sort of death spiral.

Everyone bought the game to play it. So play it, what’s the issue? You want nonstop free content? That seems to be a common sentiment. People want the same mountain of content that f2p games charge money for, but they want it with Blizzards commitment to free content.
Like I don’t get the complaints. The game has a major update every month. You either get a hero, or a map or a new event FOR FREE. You’re not paying for each individual piece of content like you would in a f2p game. You’re not buying a season pass, or a new revision of the game every year. You get free monthly content and you still find a reason to complain about it.
What more exactly do you want?

Get rid of niche heroes. No one likes being told their favorite hero is only meant to do one thing. Buff and nerf the appropriate heroes. Patch the game more often.
Pick a player base and commit to it. Is this a competitive game or a casual game where you can take it easy?

Balances faster then a month at a time to start.

No, paying is being made in many different forms. You can pay once the game, but you will also “pay” every time you play the game increasing it’s active playerbase, you “pay” when you talk about it with your friends and social network and you “pay” when you look at youtubers and streamers, you “pay” especially when watching the OWL.
It’s not that if you payed effectively only once you are not giving any money to the company, the money you generate every time you interact with the game in any way is something you need to put in factor too…
You living under a rock? They gave Bastion a major rework, with major buffs, a while ago and he’s very much a viable hero in many situations. They just did the same for Symmetra. They’re in the process of reworking torb. They just gave major buffs to Ana, Mei, McCree, Soldier and Lucio…making them all viable once again. The Summer Games patch came with the largest balance update the game has ever released. You seem to think that the devs are wearing the infinity gauntlet and can just snap their fingers to make sweeping changes on the fly.
I personally don’t have an issue with it
I personally love the new heroes/maps/events that the devs pump out. It shows us that they still care
But overall, Blizzard wants to maintain interest in the game. New content is always cool, but after a certain amount of time it becomes formulaic, and thereby stale. It’s just business! That’s why they’re focusing so hard on the eSports scene, making it as flashy and dynamic as possible, promoting it in every way they can.
Though I personally never cared about the League. I really just care about the gameplay experience and the new stuff. And the fact that the devs are still pushing out content absolutely delights me!
But at the same time, I can udnerstand the need for them to push for the eSports scene as well.
Easy. Kill Fortnite. With fire.
Then, all the spotlight, media fanfare and players stolen by Epic’s game will be returned to their rightful owner: Overwatch.

Wrecking ball is the best hero to come out since Ana and the game is in a great state. This meta is very diverse and interesting. Don’t know what you complaining about. Git good?
