Overwatch is not an FPS; it’s a HBS

An FPS (First Person Shooter) is a game that is always in first person, and has different guns to choose from to fight the enemy. An example of an FPS is Call of Duty.

An HBS (Hero Based Shooter) is a game that has a variety of different heroes, or characters, that have their own unique kits. Sometimes the game can have the player in third person (i.e. RIP-Tire, Reinhardt with shield up, Zenyatta Transcendence, etc.) In a Hero Based Shooter, there are guns to shoot but some heroes also have melee weapons, lasers, etc. Heroes also have abilities, giving more oppurtunities to eliminate opponents outside of the normal weapon.

Some argue that some heroes like Reinhardt or Brigitte are stupid because this is an “FPS”. But since it isn’t an FPS, it’s a HBS, any hero with any weapon makes sense.

I mean, they aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s a hero shooter that also happens to be an FPS.

Tell that to Symmetra mains.

Overwatch is not an FPS; it’s an HBS

This changes everything!

Personally I describe OW as a ‘Team strategy game with shooter elements’

There is no denying that the majority of the game for most of the characters are played in first person perspective and that factored heavily into many players decisions to buy the game.

None of the characters are really out of place in Overwatch but people who try to narrowly define it as an FPS without acknowledging there is clearly more elements to this game are going to feel like it is straying from the game they want to see. (It’s really not straying from what OW actually is though)

The people who can accept this already know it, and the people who can’t don’t care. That’s the aggravating part.

I like that overwatch isnt a typical FPS, if it was I wouldnt have bought it. I bought it because I tried it during the free weekend before junkenstein’s revenge in 2016 and had fun.

People need to accept that this isn’t an FPS and while SOME characters like Soldier, McCree, Widow, and Ashe might have kits that could be used in that genre; the vast majority of the roster cant and wont fit into that mold.

FPS refers to perspective, nothing more.

Overwatch is very clearly an FPS. Its’ genre is a (hero-based, if you want) team shooter.

Wikipedia:

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, which released on May 24, 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.

Sorry :man_shrugging::joy:

I don’t think there are enough Hero Based Shooters to call it a genre. Outside of tf2 and OW, what is there?

Paladins, Quake, etc. There are similar games. Hero Based Shooter isn’t what those games are called, though, you’re right. They’re called team shooters. This is the most relevant term as it can refer to all of these games, heros or otherwise.

OW is a FPS game as much as Minecraft is.

I like that overwatch isn’t a typical MOBA, if it was I wouldn’t have bought it. I bought it because I tried it looked like the modern TF2, a shooter that I enjoyed and liked to play with friends.

People need to accept that this isn’t a MOBA and while SOME characters like Brigitte, Reinhardt, Symmetra, and Mercy might have kits that could be used in that genre; the vast majority of the roster can’t and won’t fit into that mold.

It works both ways.

So, it is a shooter if playing as Widow/Ashe/76 etc.

… but if I decide to play as Rein or Brig, am I playing shooter or something else ?

I always said that OW is “Hero Brawler”. Lets say it something that you get if trying to mix FPS with some kind of MOBA game.

To be fair, the war for the identity of Overwatch seems to be waged between people who want this to be CS GO and people who wand this to be League of Legends. Of course it’s neither of those but try telling either of them that.

Is overwatch a shooter? Yes
Is the camera in first person? Yes

There we have it, it is a first person shooter.
