Overwatch Is Not A First-Person Shooter

This should be common sense. A game with characters like Winston, Moira, Brigitte, Doomfist and Reinhardt isn’t an FPS.

It could be argued that even projectile-based characters like Genji go against the classic concept of FPS.

Overwatch is something else altogether. It draws heavily from FPS, but it isn’t one.

First Person HERO Shooter

Overwatch is an FPS, due to the fact you are playing in “First Person”

Added Mode to the Game.
Not the game itself :woman_shrugging:

Going by these standards, anything could be FPS. Even a game about pink fairies could be an FPS, as long as you played the protagonist in First Person.

Tesla cannon tickles. Therefore, Winston is a first person tickler (FPT).

Well it’s a game in first person, and the majority of characters have guns.

Oh, did the definition of FPS change? I must have missed it.

  • Played (primarily) in First-Person Mode.
  • Use of (primarily) ranged weapons to shoot your opponents.

The addition of elements from non-FPS games adds to it sub-genres but does not change it main genre. Plenty of “pure” FPS games have alternate game modes, objectives, etc. So, Overwatch fits right in.

You’re in first person and you’re shooting. Every character shoots something, even if it isn’t their primary fire.

For example:
Winston shoots lightning
Moira shoots out her death beam as well as her orbs
Brigitte can shoot out her mace
Doomfist shoots bullets from his hand
Reinhardt shoots out fire (at least I’m assuming it’s fire since the ability is called “Fire Strike”)
Mei shoots out ice

I can go on.

I wouldn’t mind either, actually.

Give me a beer and 3rd person :yum:

I don’t understand why people are so pissed off at this. Does the label FPS really matter? I will love Overwatch no matter what, the game is what it is.

Out of 30 characters, I mentioned 5 (aprox 20% of heroes) who have nothing to do with ranged weapons. Doomfist looks like a character that just came out from Mortal Kombat.

Therefore, Overwatch is not an FPS. It is a different genre, or at least a hybrid of FPS and something else.

Indeed. So long as a core gameplay element is shooting some form of a weapon, and it is done from a first person perspective, it is considered an FPS.

Not all FPS are grimy, war based, super serious, M4-only shooters.

Please see the quote below, it has nothing to do with Ranged weapons, its the fact you are in first person, and shooting. And this was your topic, no one is pissed off, people are just responding to your topic, which happens to be incorrect.

You typed with an extreme amount of confidence to be so wrong. Stop overthinking it. FPS is a first person shooter.

Is the game in first person? Yes
Do characters shoot stuff? Yes

Then it’s a FPS LMAO

Okay, then tell me the name of two First Person Shooters that are similar to Overwatch. Anything counts, as long as it is a game commonly labeled as FPS and similar to Overwatch, with main characters shooting magical healing orbs and using hammers as their primary weapons.

Before the term “FPS” was created, the games were Doom clones.
I’d say that OW is very much like Doom if you look bit deeper than the skin.

TF2 and Paladins.

FPS doesn’t mean the games have to be super similar lol. Halo is a FPS, Destiny is a FPS, Call of Duty is a FPS, Borderlands is a FPS, Battlefield is a FPS, hell GTAV is a FPS when you use the FPS mode. Overwatch is an FPS

It is definitely an fps. There are just a few heroes, who don’t really belong.
