"Overwatch is dying" threads

Forums friends,

Please give it a rest. This is the worst forum trend yet. There have been threads about the game dying since 2017 and there will be just as many in 2021. Almost none of them have any meaningful content in them and are generally just not-so-subtle complaints about specific issues the poster has with the game.

No, Twitch numbers, the opinions of some YouTubers, and/or Overwatch League popularity stats DO NOT justify your opinions on balance, Brigitte, the meta, the developers, or whatever else you want to complain about. It’s baffling to me that so many people on these forums are wishing so hard for the game to fail as though that will somehow justify their own negative feelings toward it.

Constructive criticism and discussion are welcome and important to the health of any online game. What should NOT be welcome here are threads reveling in the poster’s own perceived downfall of the game.

For anyone who’s given up hope for this game and no longer enjoys it, I have some suggestions.

1: Accept that it is possible that your opinions are not gospel. It’s possible that the game is NOT horribly imbalanced and ignored and abandoned by its developers.

2: Stop spending time on things you hate. Life is too short for that. Find something you love and focus on that.

3: If you think you used to love the game and only your complaints will ā€œbring back the game you loveā€, please stop now. Accept that the core of this game has NOT changed radically at any point since release and your opinions on minor balance changes and whatever else do not equal the game having changed for the worse. It’s not a given fact just because there are threads and/or YouTube videos about it. Unhappy people are more likely to post complaints than happy people are to post praises. That’s the nature of humanity. Do not mistake forums trends for facts. It serves nobody.

I love this game at its core and that’s why I’m here. If you do, too, let’s talk. You’re who I’m here to talk to. I spend way too much time and energy engaging people who are just here to spread their own negative feelings and it’s not good for anybody here. Please, let’s stop this and use these forums for something other than spreading doom and gloom that rational people don’t want to see.

It wouldn’t be a trend if it wasn’t true. The game is arguably in its worst state right now. Streamers, content creators, the people who keep this game alive have all left for something else.

For a game like Overwatch to have this stigma in only 3 years, which was once compared to TF2, is extremely disappointing.

I’m only sticking around because I have a sliver of hope they can turn this mess of a game around and make it wonderful again. Thats why I constantly give it harsh criticism, because I dont want this game to end so soon.

This wouldn’t be such an issue if Acti-Blizz gave any reason to trust them. But they don’t.

At best they stay silent, at worst they misdirect, if not lie outright.

Did you know Overwatch is dying?

I think you are missing the point of those threads. Those threads are by people who love the game and are desperate to see some changes made, to breath life into something that they feel has gone stale.

You are basically telling people that their concerns should be kept to themselves so that you don’t have to suffer the indignity of scrolling past them.

Having said that, if you want to lobby for people to stop using such overly dramatic thread titles in general… I could get on board with that.

You what ?
Ever heard of religion ?

You are making two mistakes here. One is coming to a forum full of haters and ignorant people to try and tell them to not be what they are. The second one is caring at all about what they say, which is of course false and anyone with a bit of common sense can see it. Just laugh at their posts and see OW continue to thrive.

I’m with OP on this one.

While I agree that doom & gloom threads are fundamentally unhelpful, the game is currently suffering from serious issues and acknowledging that is important.

Except this time now it’s happening unless they do something.

How is it thriving? This mindset is just as bad.

At this point the comparison is an insult to TF2.

Btw, this thread has genuinely been gold so far, good job everyone

That is what most ppl are already doing.

Why should we accept letting the game to be neglected?
Also when most of the ppl are complaining about the same thing, maybe the devs should think about how to solve that instead of keep recycling things every year.

The only reason I complain is because I care. I want to enjoy Overwatch for a long time. It bothers me that the end is drawing near unless they decide to address core problems.

I’n before people start trolling you for having an opinion other than theirs.

Friendly reminder that Archives is a small distraction that will last three weeks and then we will all return to the regular schedule of leavers, deranked players, smurfs and one tricks.

Two very different things though

One is entirely believable with evidence backed up while the other is based on the merit of ā€œYou gotta follow this or you’ll burn in hell!ā€

Both are trends. So your statement

is wrong is all I’m saying.

Also I have yet to see any evidence that overwatch is ā€œdyingā€.

Content creators don’t keep the game alive, players do.

This isn’t to say that content creators don’t play a part in generating interest, but I think their importance is greatly overstated. Just because Stylosa, the master of the 10:01 video about whether or not D.Va has armpit hair, has moved on to something else doesn’t mean the game is dead.

Also, content creators and streamers are heavily incentivized to chase the next big thing. Dedicating oneself to a single game may have some benefits, but there are far more risks.

All that said, I don’t really think OW has an unhealthy streaming community. Though the forums may hate it, the league has been attracting pretty damn impressive numbers so far. For example, there were 170,000+ people watching the Fuel vs Fusion match just a minute ago. Personally, I’ve been introduced to dozens of streamers because of the league. I love watching all the Zen players (especially Jjonak), and I probably wouldn’t have found them without the league.

As for the content of the OP itself, I think it’s inevitable that most posts here will be negative. I consider myself a positive person with a favorable opinion of the game, but even I first came here to post a complaint, not to sing the game’s praises. I do think some serious echo-chambering goes on around here, though. For all the doom and gloom, the game still feels great to play (in my opinion), and it still seems to have a pretty strong pro scene in the form of OWL.

Just my $0.02.
