…so why isn’t there a DotA-style map with towers, creeps, et cetera?
The moba mix comes in the form of roles and elements like healing and abilities.
Because the MOBA elements are in there for spice, not as the main course.

OW is a mix from a mechanics pov. The idea of heroes, abilities, etc…
That doesn’t mean the objectives need to be the same.
The game mode you’re asking for requires to 1v1 for most of the match, which makes OW less of a team-based shooter. It also requires some sort of gear to upgrade the hero, which is non existent.
But I agree that OW needs new innovative game modes. It’s all centered around payloads for now.
Moba is more about symmetrical maps with objectives that both sides fight to achieve. At same time you’re a part of one of sides that can interact with it to affect the result.
Is derivative from strategy games on that regard. Pretty much any arena with objectives and symmetrical sides can be considered as moba if each side has unique “parts” to achieve that said objective.
Removing 2cp and introduce push, by example makes the game leans towards moba, even if their goal was to make the game lean towards fps with the 5v5 change.
Moba isn’t new, just got popular by influence of some games.
At same time OW isn’t neither moba neither fps. Is an action game with elements of both but never entirely being neither of them. Is a team based action game first with exhilariating combat that leans towards fps and moba, but never reaching the point of be any of those for “real”.
Get close, but not enough to be. Maybe that’s why even today the game has that kind of mix identity by it’s players.
Well, maybe only as a PvE mode against AI.
Certainly wont mind a tower defense style like orc must die in OW2.
GOTYAY
I think they said some stuff towards more game modes, clans and pve stuff. But at this point we can only speculate. While the engine could support could be problematic to implement on something like switch.
They have some “plans” which they just “hinted” not exactly “talked” much about it.
I have more “hope” on pve than actually pvp at this point. But pvp can be good if they do something about it on the first 6-12 months of the game, for real.
Only time will tell if they could achieve that, my advice is not to expect huge stuff on early access at oct4. Treat it as if is an open beta to avoid some unpleasant surprises.
Other than that, they have passionate playerbase which can come with good ideas like the ones on Workshop already, they should invest more on that regard for pve and decide what they want to do with pvp portion of the game also.
