Overwatch frame rate problem

i don’t remember exactly since when, but my frame rate in overwatch was unbelievably low. i used to get around 120 fps with 70% gpu usage, now i get 10 fps with 100% gpu usage.(all of this is on the title screen, when i join a game my pc practicly crashes.

this doesnt happend with any other games, i tried reinstalling and playing with the graphic settings.

gpu: nvidia GTX 1050

cpu: Intel i7

ram: 12GB

nvidia driver version: 531.18

Are you 100% certain it’s a registered 10FPS? Because the Doomfist OPM animation is intentionally framey but is still technically locked at 60fps. I thought I was experiencing hardware failure when I first saw it.

I’ve personally had issues with several games starting up recently where the intro screens will have very low registered FPS (like sub 10) but spring back to normal after a minute or after I boot up the game a second time. I’ve swapped GPU’s just to test it and it seems to be on the game/driver side of things. Could very well be just bad coding, but I’m going to try and do a clean wipe and see if it’s something else.

Also not trying to be a hardware snob, but the 1050 really wasn’t a solid option when it came out, it might be time to consider swapping GPU’s. I could pull off 300fps with a 980ti in OW1, but by the end of that game’s lifespan after a few graphic changes it couldn’t pull off 200fps, and with OW2’s “overhaul” it couldn’t even hit 190. With a 1080ti I’m only hitting about 220fps, and that’s with performance based settings.

Man you make it sound like that is bad

When you go from maxing out at 300fps to 190 with no change in hardware, that is bad.

fair but also
that is still pretty gud fps

Entirely playable won’t deny it, but the low % dips were very noticeable in the heat of competitive gameplay.

try lock the framerate to lets say 120 or something
and try it out in small increases
sometimes for whatever reason if you uncap the fps it goes all over the place

I did get my ceiling figured out in OW2, but I appreciate the input

intel i7 doesnt really mean anything by itself, i7 could be good and it could be TERRIBLE depending on what exact one youre using. the first i7 came out in 2008 and is nothing like an i7 today

overwatch isnt really a GPU intensive game, its CPU bound

it starts out with 60 fps the moment it lunches, then after a few secodns it drops to 10 and stays there.

Again is this a registered 10FPS? Like the counter says “10fps” or is it the menu animation?

Specifically does it do the 10fps thing on the Doomfist animation and
the Kiriko animation?

Also what model is your i7?

Intel(R) Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz 2.81 GHz

I dont think its a CPU problem, after the game starts up cpu usage drops down to 60% at max, while gpu usage is at 100% constantly

@Trando i dont know if you can ping here but yes, its registered.

found this one with a quick google search, same cpu and card you are using.

you can ping by highlighting part of their comment with your mouse and clicking the ‘quote’ button at appears

you do it as many times as you like to as many comments you like, even comments in other threads

Honestly it’s impressive you managed to squeeze more than 80fps out of a 1050.

That is honestly remarkable, it could very well be the hardware based on that coincidence.

I’ve never seen that happen so coincidentally before.

that was on low settings, i wouldent get above 60 with normal settings.

i tried all of these and it dident work

found two more with your same hardware. hope you can get it fixed. In my case I f* up my game by disabling some core windows services that I had to enable again, don’t know if could be related.

i know this sounds crazy… but try removing the GPU and using the onboard (integrated in the CPU) graphics and see what happens

overwatch is generally regarded as a CPU bound game, you might be able to play just fine with your integrated graphics, and something might be bugged in the 1050 driver (the 1050 should be able to run your game just fine too, hence might be bugged)

unplug your monitor from the gpu, physically unplug the GPU from it’s pcie slot (carefully, look for the lever to detatch it) and plug your monitor into the motherboard slot instead

just try it, maybe it will work, maybe not but you have nothing to lose

i have an old (2012) motherboard where i got (a lot) better performance (crunching video input from a usb capture card) when i ditched the dedicated gpu (745 gpu) and used the onboard graphics from a 2015 i7 instead (a 4790), sounds crazy right? i guess it kinda is

im on a laptop cant do that
