Overwatch File Size Bloat

This game is frankly getting ridiculously large. 46.2gb is just an obscene file size. I’m quite fed up with how devs can’t optimize their drive usage worth a darn these days. I seem to recall the first game clocking in at like 18gb. There is no way that the measly content we’ve gotten since then has balloned this much.

For perspective, the newest splatoon game was a tiny 9.6 gb, with its predecessor being a 3.1gb. That’s small enough to fit on a single layer dvd!.

The newest Zelda is 5.4gb…

Anyways, that concludes my rant.

Yeah but those are switch games and have what, 960p assets?

Every so often they release a patch that compresses the file size a good amount but beyond that it is what it is higher definition assets take up more storage. New maps new heroes new skins for those hero etc.

40GB is what your average games were and what they should be again lol.
Give me a 50GB game over the current average 100+GB games.

Basically half of size its Textures. its consume a huge space

Me when I download the 4k texture pack and it doubles the install size to 100gb…

if a game is sub-50gb I am happy.

Overwatch 2 is pretty modest given your average AAA game just isn’t going to be 9gbs anymore.

Don’t look at COD then, you’ll have a existential crisis. Switch games are small because they are inferior, low quality, 240P texture games. Get more storage if you’re struggling to have a single game take up 50gb

People do be finding reasons for ranting on forums

I can’t believe you compared a live service game to a non-live service and that too a platform exclusive game which has a lower quality assets.

That’s one of the main reasons I’ve been considering getting Sparking Zero. Besides being a big DBZ fan, im surprised the game is just 30GB.

46 is reasonable if not kinda small for a modern day shooter. It was like 18-20gb at launch I think? Cast and map count has more than doubled, stuff like the Workshop, PvE/Hero mastery (not a ton, but still some new assets and systems needed), and constant flow of new skins.

If you wanna see real file size bloat, Sea of Thieves is also from 2016 and it was like 45gb then. It’s over 110 today. And it’s almost entirely in the form of time locked and real money content.

Meanwhile cod and other tripple AAA games eating 70~200 on release that then content patches on top of that.

Like I have minecraft mod worlds larger then overwatch.

Maybe there should be options to only install low quality assets for those who value storage space over visual effects. After all, you don’t need every ultra high quality texture if you play the game on low anyways.

And is nearly indiscernible at all but the closest distances at the highest of resolutions.

“Low Quality” textures are usually 1024pixels x 1024 pixels.

Source: Am an indie game dev. These megatextures are frankly just superfluous, especially in PBR based games.

I know you aren’t disagreeing, but those are also an affront to our storage space.

Most of that is thighs.

Why is your game so small?
My Windows 10 Overwatch folder is 77.7 GB, according to “Tree Size free” (small tool that counts file space in folders and sub folders).

It’s mainly
Overwatch/data/casc/data → 59 GB
Overwatch/data/casc/indices → 18 GB

It’s plausible (But I have no idea) that you have some residual files left over from updates. Things that are changed in the game and whatnot. 46gb is a fresh install.
