Overwatch continuously freezing at entering game screen

Since the mid season pre-install update, anytime I try to launch overwatch my game freezes on the entering game screen. I have tried a scan and repair, uninstall and reinstall, pc restart, logging into another account, updating my drivers, but nothing fixes the issue.

Hey there,

If the issue is happening on multiple accounts as suggested then we are very likely looking at something on the system or network interfering in a way the stalls the client out. Without specific information about your system though I am going to bombard you with a number of general steps to try.

Try doing an extended power cycle on your system. Turn off all devices including the modem. Wait 30 minutes, turn on the modem, wait 5 minutes, turn on any network devices, wait 2 minutes, turn on your computer and try the game.

In some cases there is a corrupt or misconfigured setting within the router or modem. We cannot say what that might be offhand but the easiest way to resolve these conflicts would be to factory reset the router and/or modem.

You may need to look up your specific model for the steps on how to do this and in some rare cases you may need to have this done by the ISP. Feel free to reach out to them for assistance if necessary.

You can try using a VPN. This can help determine if the issue is routing based. Please note we do not support VPN usage though we do not prohibit its use with most of our games. Some countries around the world do restrict VPN usage so you will want to research these restrictions for your country before attempting to use a VPN.

Many VPNs offer a demo or trial version of their service to allow you test without commitment.

This is not meant to be the solution, just for testing but if it solves the issue and are comfortable using the VPN, you can continue to do so.

Do you have the ability to connect the system to a mobile hotspot?

We do not support this setup for playing but it can provide contrast to your normal connection. If you go this route make sure you are on mobile data and not on your wifi network and if you have a limited data plan, restrict your testing to prevent excessive data usage.

There are online guides for most smartphones on how to do this and most carriers can guide you through the setup process as well.

Do you have the ability to try a different computer on the same network? Or, the ability to try your current computer on a different network? This can help us determine if what you are experiencing is due to an network issue or something specifically with your system itself. Give it a shot and see what happens.

Let’s reset the in game user options:

  1. Right click Windows Start
  2. Open File Explorer
  3. Open Documents
  4. Delete the Overwatch folder and empty the Recycle Bin.

(This will delete any unsaved/saved highlights so if you wish to preserve those, save and then move them from the videos folder before deleting the Overwatch folder.)

Try running your system in selective startup mode: https://battle.net/support/article/200483

Create a new administrator account: Blizzard Support - Creating a New Administrator Account

Once the account is created, shut down the computer, wait 60 seconds, restart, log into the new profile and try the app/client.

If that doesn’t solve the issue, then I recommend submitting a ticket with an msinfo attached for further investigation. (instructions for collecting that msinfo report will be on the form.)

Click your name at the top right of this page, click support, click contact support.

Absolutely willing to try these, I did want to pose a question to you to see if you have a different outlook on what might be wrong. Yesterday I was able to get it to work by deleting all Battle net and Overwatch related files and doing a fresh reinstall of both, however upon getting on today it was broken again. I tried it again and both times on the Battle net reinstall it gets stuck for a while updating the battle net update agent, and then when i reinstall it works. I did try using seperate networks to no avail and my girlfriend who uses a different pc on the same network is having no issues with her overwatch at all. The double reinstall has me working for now but I assume I’ll be back to square one if i decide to close the game once I open it, and I’ll try some of these fixes, I appreciate your time here and if you have any updated thoughts on the situation it’d be incredibly appreciated.

this is becoming server-side game-wide – i’m currently stuck on the “game found! connecting to server” screen, but my chat log updates with “error starting game, trying again”

people who got put into the match are chatting between the “error” updates

I just downloaded patch and logged in, same thing. People are getting connected to the game server and can talk in chat to each other, but the game was stuck in an endless loop of “error starting game, trying again”. I thought maybe it was just us, so I requeued and same thing. Typical patch day lol.

Did you solve the problem? During the two days of the mid-season update, I also suddenly couldn’t start the game and got stuck in “connecting”.
