Overwatch Comic Art Style

Do you prefer the Dark Horse Comics art style or the Old Overwatch Comics art style?
Dark Horse:

Old Comics:

i like the retribution one a lot more

I prefer the Darkhorse personally. OTOH, the feminizing look they are trying to put on Zarya is a step backwards… how ironic for a game that wants to normalize every variation of people but then retreats on this particular iconic character…

Granted that this doesn’t depend on the publisher but on the artist (see Better World VS Uprising comic), I currently like the art style of London Calliing and New Blood. The problem is that they tend not to give the same graphic quality to all the characters in the comic in a way that is too extreme.

New Blood’s omnics and Talon soldiers are shameful, although they should pose a threat that keeps the story going. Just because heroes are strong and cool doesn’t mean they have to fight with forgettable scribbles.

It’s probably the deadline, but the Dark Horse comics only do ‘okay’ at characters and close ups, but the big, scenic, wide-angle shots look barely sketched out. Buildings are barely there. Scenery/landscape is a rushed after-thought. The climactic full pagers are ‘meh’ and lack detail.

Not a fan of either, really, but the Darkhorse ones look more organic, at least.

Remember when Papa Jeff said they wanted to raise the quality? This is it

I quite like the current style tbh. Something about the old one seemed uncanny to me personally.

The artist for this New Blood comic has a very cutesy style. It lacks depth, but isn’t overly simplistic for Overwatch and it’s also more pleasing to the eye than the old one in my opinion.

Zarya is off in this, though. In some panels, she looks overly cutesy, even with the style in mind. Not a big deal.

It’s not “Dark Horse style” or “Overwatch style” - each comic is done by a different artist with their own style. I like Irene Koh’s style (New Blood), but I also like the art of Babs Tarr (London Calling), Nesskain (Mission Statement, Dragonslayer, most of the origin trailers) and Ryan Benjamin (Masquerade).

The only one that I dislike (or is rather just unfitting) is the first Tracer comic.

Can you imagine? She looks like a woman or something.

Thats like saying she didnt look like a woman on the other comics

I prefer the style Uprising and Retribution had (Both Gray Shuko).

Not the comics but ingame. I was honestly confused if she is a guy or a woman when I saw her in OW for a first time.

I’ve been following them on twitter since forever, so when I saw some screenshots from the Zarya comic, I was like “Wait a minute…”

She has short hair and muscles. Those are her only two features that don’t appear immediately feminine. In every other aspect, she looks like almost every other female character in the game.

It is more complicated than just “short hair” and “muscles.”

I’m a sucker for all of them, even if some character interpretation in the recent ones aren’t spot on.

The roadhog comic was probably my favorite artstyle wise.
