Introduction
The beginning cutscene takes place in Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, where its prison is containing multiple prisoners. The guards make some taunting remarks to one particular prisoner before an explosion takes place. Talon troopers take one of the prisoners and begins to escort them out. However, under the Morrison’s watchful eye, he had Reinhardt lead a strike team alongside Tracer, Genji, and Mercy. The engage the Talon forces, but are unable to go after the prisoner. As Morrison tracks the prisoner movements, the team prepares to engage and recapture the prisoner.

Gameplay
Breakout takes place on the Watchpoint: Grand Mesa base, where Talon has incurred a prison break to retrieve one prisoner. The map is divided into several areas with designated enemy waves, which must be cleared before the team is permitted to proceed. Morrison mentions that the prisoner is on the move, but there is no time limit.
Similar to the other Archives events, players are given a choice of Breakout and Breakout (All Heroes), the latter mode allowing the player to choose between any heroes in the available roster.

Stages

  1. As Morrison details the mission, the team go out through the hole in the prison wall, fighting waves of Talon soldiers along the fields of Colorado. A dropship will appear just before the entrance of the Grand Mesa National Forest. At the entrance, a sniper will spawn on a tree beside the entrance or another squad will spawn right in front of the entrance; higher difficulties also include another dropship and will spawn three snipers instead of one.
  2. Once the enemies are cleared, the team can enter the National Forest. Inside the forest, the team must clear several clusters of Talon enemies. Assassins will be commonplace, as the trees allow high mobility for them. As they continued, a brief cutscene takes place where they come face to face with a new Talon unit: The Talon Knight. The unit has two swords that deals a heavy amount of damage up close. He can also block or reflect some projectiles. This is the boss of the second stage before the team can move onto the next stage.
  3. After the forest, it will be open plain field that is a straight shot to the end of the stage. There are enough Talon troopers to buy some time until another cutscene takes place. Genji deflects a missile-like projectile from Mercy. The cutscene introduces the Talon Jetpack Soldiers. As they attack, more Talon reinforcements arrive on boats through the Grand Mesa Lake. After clearing the Talon forces, move on to the final stage of the game mode.
  4. The team reached a helipad. The prisoner is inside, with the doors barred shut. This will force Tracer to set some explosives to blow open the door. More Talon forces arrive to stall the team. Dropships will drop Troopers and Enforcers. Snipers, Assassins, and the two new units, Knights and Jetpack Troopers will also spawn. After dealing with all of them, the finale of the game takes place.

Enemies
• Trooper: The bulk of Talon’s forces, Troopers will spawn in groups from elevators, out of buildings and so on. They are armed with rifles like those used by Soldier: 76, and attack with bursts of bullet fire. They can perform a dodge roll like McCree, but otherwise have average health and offensive capability.
• Enforcer: An upgraded Trooper, Enforcers have higher health than their weaker counterparts. Instead of a rapid-fire burst, Enforcers are armed with stronger shotguns that require a few seconds to charge before blasting nearby targets
• Sniper: The Talon’s analog of Widowmaker, albeit without her Venom Mine capability. The Sniper will spawn in open areas, using her grappling hook to switch between vantage points so sch can attempt to headshot the players. If isolated in close ranger, she will pull out a low damage sidearm for self-defense.
• Assassin: A special unit like the Hunter or Witch from Left 4 Dead, characterized by manic, unhinged laughter, and spawns in similar areas to the Sniper. She will constantly teleport, like Tracer’s Blink ability, around the surrounding walls before teleporting onto the floor and charging at one random player. Once she makes contact, she pins her target and uses her arm blade to tear into the victim. This ends when she has either taken enough damage, is stunned out of the attack, is hit with a quick melee attack, or incapacitates the target after which she returns to teleporting between the walls. On higher difficulties, the Assassin’s slashing is enough to incapacitate a player at full health in a few seconds.
• Knight: A special unit of Talon. Like Genji, he wields swords that can deflect projectiles and bullets. He is vulnerable when he gathers his swords in front of him to charge for an attack. When he attacks, he will focus down on one player down and dash toward to said player. Once in close range, he is able to deal large amounts of damage onto a player. On higher difficulties, the Knight’s attacks are enough to incapacitate a player at full health.
• Jetpack Trooper: These units are very similar to Pharah, as they are able to fly in the air. Different to Pharah however, is that they are able to hover for 5 seconds in position. They are also able to fly around to dodge incoming attacks. They can also launch specials bolas to temporary render a player immobile. They are only immobile for 7 seconds, and all Talon units nearby will focus down on the immobilized player. On higher difficulties, the immobilized players are guaranteed an incapacitation.

Story and Aftermath
During the map, Morrison is researching the escaped prisoner that Talon has come for. As he does this in the background, the team are discussing who this prisoner could be. Genji comments that the prisoner feels somewhat familiar to him. Halfway through the map, Morrison calls the team to relay the information of the prisoner: Theo Ribecca, Inmate 41. This motivates the team to retrieve the prisoner, more so Genji, as he is more familiar with what Theo has done, in both the latter’s time as a member of Blackwatch and the short-lived team, Beastwatch.
Following the completion of the map, the doors are blown open, black smoke taking its place. Reinhardt orders for Genji to take point but as Genji looked around, the smoke suddenly clears up and shows Theo with his shotgun at Genji’s head. Theo pulled the trigger, and while Genji managed to dodge, the shell did knock him out, getting blasted back out to the entrance. Tracer engages Theo in retaliation. But Theo used his staff to easily beat Tracer, even knocking out Mercy with a knockout grenade. Reinhardt then charges forward, but Theo moves out of the way and defeats him easily too. And as Reinhardt recovered slowly, Theo taunts him before leaving on a Talon aircraft.
On board the Talon aircraft, Theo expresses gratitude for the save, but then Doomfist appears as a hologram to speak with him. Doomfist expresses his interest in Theo’s career in Overwatch. The two make good with each other, with Doomfist expressing a partnership, and Theo expressing payment.

Trivia
There was a scrapped idea for the final stage of this mission. The excerpt below is it.
(Something to keep in mind is that if you leave the explosive unattended, Talon troopers can remove the explosive, essentially resetting this stage of the game. This will prompt the team to stay near the explosive, sort of as a meta comment on Overwatch players not playing their objectives. This will prompt players to stay near the door and be mindful, as all participants will receive the bomb timer on their HUD, and the timer will disappear if the bomb is removed. And until the bomb is put back on the door, Talon forces will halt spawning.)

A nice write up, I really hope they announce something in Blizzconn 2019…

All this writing could go in vain, if Blizzard continues to be mediocore… they’re currently not the best at expanding events/lore. Never was… (and that short story/2 week events are nice but nothing impressive).
