Why not? In the game the gameplay mode maybe is too much expensive, but a book I think is too much interesting for more overwatch fans for a lot mistery in the lore.
I would like to point out that Blizzard was planning a full fledged graphic novel, called Overwatch First Strike. Unfortunately the project was canceled due to the fact that the storyline in the game would be conflicting with the content of the novel.

That said, I personally donāt see a good reason for them not to make a new one. Cancelled books and retcons happen in Blizzard frequently. So I donāt see why they donāt try again.
I know many people would be interested in any sort of a solid lore piece like a novel. In fact, itād be best to have 3+ different stories and comics happening at the same time until they all end, or just two ect, in the same spot.
Like have Reaper go triapsing on a wild goose chase set up by Sombra, while have a separate book/comic/story focus on Ana and Soldier following his movements. Then have been line up to where they meet, and have a single comic from there on to finish the arc.
I only propose that way because we have so many Characters intertwined and itād give each of them something to do so to speak.
I donāt know, I just want lore like they gave a few years ago via comics again
Oh I agree, I just wanted to point out what has been attempted in the past. I also will note, Alyssa Wong, joined the Overwatch writing team not too long ago, so it makes me wonder what prospective lore projects they have in the works.
I just hope theyāre good.
Itās personal preference I know, but I really didnāt like the writing of the short story. Not the actual story, but rather how it was written. It just reminded me of a lot of the rough drafts I made in college before they had all sorts of corrections made by the professor regarding word choice, voice, exposition, etc. The contrast between it, Baptisteās teaser and each of the comics just is vast to me.
But those are my personal worries.
I knew about First Strike ā¦ and I was very upset to know how it didnāt get deeper in order not to be limited to the game (I suspect it has to do with the management of the archives event)
but what I find paradoxical is how (unfortunately) the game has had a success (in my opinion) greater for the propaganda on the lore before it was released and has now been completely set aside in favor of the e-sport side and the gameās features.
I really miss comics, and above all it makes me sad that the lore is bound only to archives and to two short films a year. But I really liked Ana Bastet as a new writing ā¦ or even the Cuerva report. I would like to go back to having more readings in OW.
I was equally bummed about the cancellation of the First Strike novel.
Now, I was extremely hyped about Uprising when it came out in 2017. I think it should have become a permanent edition to the game for those of us who like those campaign modes. Now when the game went back to normal in May 2017, I was disappointed. I really liked that Uprising campaign.
That being said, I was inspired to write an Overwatch fan novel that month. I finished writing it in October 2018; it is approximately 600 pages long, and Iām breaking it up into a trilogy.
Sticking as close to the lore as possibleāavoiding fan fiction entirelyāand using reputable sources like the OW website, cinematic shorts, comics, and the Overwatch wikis on Fandom and Gamepedia, my books tells the story of my main character and incorporating the Overwatch timeline. He would cross paths with several characters who are playable heroes in the game.
I am currently editing it, and I am going to ask the Overwatch team what steps I need to take to earn permission to publish this story.
Donāt lose hope.
The Kaelāthas short story for WoW was originally a fan fiction to me understanding, and a popular fan fiction surrounding a goblin made its way into the game.
So, Blizzard has shown attention to dedicated fans.
Just because your story is canon-compliant, does not make it less of a fanfic. Fanfiction is not a dirty word or a bad thing. Most fanfics are canon-compliant.
Just throwing this out there.
No worries Mechavomit.
I guess what little fan fiction Iāve come across happened to be the ones that were not canon. Just my luck.
I am sure that you are right about most fan fiction being canon-compliant.
I suspect that the graphic novel was going to have a lot of cliches in it. Like originally they said that Reyes was angry that Morrison was chosen as the Strike Commander but the in-game lore and the webcomics contradict this showing Reyes actually happy with being in the background without the responsibilities of being the Strike Commander settling for the lesser field commander role (probably doesnāt want to deal with all the extra paper work).
Interestingly enough, she did finally get a chance to speak lore wise about Baptiste in a Q&A so that was cool. I follow Alyssa Wong on twitter and sometimes, the things she tweets makes me wonder if she is subtly hinting at Overwatch stories or ones of her own? (I am not sure if she prioritizes OW stories or balances both hers and Overwatch?)
Like, one tweet she made not too long ago was where she said something like she has an idea but it will completely change story as we know but it would open up so much new possibilities or something like that. I wasnāt sure if she was talking about something she was working on or Overwatch in general.
And this was the start. Of marvel vs dc vs Overwatch
I think itās safe to default everything she tweets to āher personal workā rather than Overwatch. Sheās not allowed to give any hints, Iām pretty sure and unlike Chu, sheās not a lead writer so sheās even less in control than him.
I would be really interested in a series of full length comics or maybe even text-only books/novels as long as they are well written and donāt take place in some kind of book-only alternative universe
