Overwatch 2 purchase considerations and how it NEEDS 31:9 Super Ultrawide Aspect Ratio

I have 0 respect for Blizzard after bending the knee to China via censoring Blitzchung via a ban and firing 2 casters over the ban, while failing to ever explicitly apologize for giving the ban or rescinding it. For this reason, I promote against purchase of Blizzard’s goods beyond the absolute bare minimum. Why is all that relevant? -because you need to keep it in mind when considering whether or not to buy Overwatch 2. I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy Overwatch 2 -but I am saying it is a flaw that should discourage you a little though.

I am interested in purchasing Overwatch 2 despite all of that, but I need a 31:9 aspect ratio. In 2021, ultrawide (21:9) and super ultrawide (31:9) will effectively be standard gaming monitors. Build the game around that, rather than just using the “unfair advantage” excuse or I am bailing altogether. Would I tolerate 21:9? -yes, but as your consumer I ideally want 31:9 and would be critical of failure to implement it.

If in the year 2021 PC gamers do not have ultrawide monitors, then my honest opinion is: give them the horizontal black bars on their screen, rather than punishing up-to-date gamers with vertical black bars on the sides of their screens for having better equipment. If they want a better view, they can buy the appropriate equipment, or just use 3 cheap monitors at once for the same effect. But, holding back technological progress artificially with bad gaming ratios is as regressive as it is short-sighted to what modern gamers are sporting.

Thoughts on this? Any other purchase or technical considerations Overwatch 2 should consider?

I’ll never forget their actions and indeed they were despicable actions but I still want to support overwatch and Jeff K did condemn and denounce the ban. Nothing is more important than Free Speech.

Bruh, it’s been like a year and a half since that happened and people are still talking about it?? grow up, the past is history, and the future is a mystery, everyone moves on, and so does life.

Never, EVER, forget the past or you are doomed to repeat it

More people will have them sure, but they will def not be the standard.

It isnt even about better equipment, those monitor sizes are a preference, they are not automatically better. Tons of people also do not like using them, even if they have the money to buy one.

Ultrawide monitors are objectively superior to normal monitors. To prefer otherwise would only be valid if you simply do not have the room or budget for it. I cannot conceive of a good reason to not have an ultrawide or super ultrawide monitor apart from wanting to save space/money, and this is both from a gaming and work perspective.

As for standard, I merely mean they will be viewed as standard for a decent gaming setup among hardcore computer gamers. However, what is common for the average person to have as a computer setup in the first place, is generally something that is not powerful enough for triple-A gaming. With that in mind, I think it is fair to assume Overwatch should cater to the hardcore gaming audience’s default setup, rather than to the default setup of computer users at large that can barely run Overwatch, if at all.

To sum it up an entitled dude that bought an expensive monitor and is mad that the game don’t support his niche setup

This is why people do not like the Overwatch forums -this default response any time anyone brings up an issue or differing perspective. You can disagree without being a douche about it.

Says the person who would rather most people play the game in a crunched aspect ratio just so he can use expensive monitor.

Of course everyone can afford $500 + monitor and an overaly expensive rig to support it right?

How exactly is ultrawide/super ultrawide superior? Any quantifiable objective viewpoints or is it all just subjective opinion and speculation?

Uhhh no, ultrawide is not the standard, in fact 1080p monitors are still the standard, they should add support for other aspect ratios but absolutelly not this

That is just plain stupid and entitled.
Overwatch is played on console too, most people use a TV not a monitor, 16:9 is the standard, the rest are niche specially 31:9.

In fact is worse for competitive play, you get more distracted, just look at the config most OW pros use and they usually play the game at 1080p reducing the internal resolution to be even smaller.

This is like asking me to prove why 4k is better than 1080p -it is better if you have the money for it.

4k is better than 1080p because it offers a higher resolution and a higher pixel density. 4k provides a sharper and clearer image than 1080p.

Ultrawide maintains the same vertical pixel resolution (1080p or 1440p in most cases). Ultrawide provides no boost in image clarity over the 16:9 standard as the increased horizontal resolution only allows for more of an image to be displayed at the same amount of clarity at once, or worse case, stretches the image causing a loss in clarity. Not to mention that a 21:9 aspect ratio demands more performance from a GPU as it’s having to render an extra 33% of an image (almost 50% for 31:9).

For £600-£650 you can either get:

  • 1440p (Ultrawide)
  • 100MHz refresh rate
  • VA Panel
  • 4ms response time
  • Freesync
  • 300 cd/m^2

OR

  • 1440p (16:9)
  • 144MHz refresh rate
  • IPS Panel
  • 1ms response time
  • Freesync & G-Sync
  • 420 cd/m^2

Remember that the Overwatch team had nothing to do with it, and if I remember correctly they even stood against it, but they had no power in the situation.

It’s like disrespecting an employee because his boss told another employee to do something that you didn’t like good.

This is the most childish, entitled, backward post I’ve seen in a long time. The fact that you’re conflating the support for your stupidly expensive set-up with social and moral issues tells us all we need to know about you.

It’s not about Hong-Kong, it’s never been about Hong-Kong for your ilk. It’s about outrage. It’s about using any and all reason to undermine and denigrate something you don’t like. This is appalling, and frankly, you should be ashamed of yourself for it. At least, Acti-Blizz is a company, a formless, faceless conglomerate. That you’re managing to show as little empathy as them as an individual is kinda impressing, congrats.

Until they retire the standard monitors in favor of ultrawide the problem of being able to afford an advantage over other gamers is a very real problem. Ultra-wide monitors afford a very, very real advantage that is. not. fair.

So, sorry to see you go.

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Yup, guess I’ll see you in another month or so when you make another topic like this

Was hoping for more technical reasoning rather than the generic Tumblr-tier emotions-based “NO” with many insults and few reasons. Someone said something ridiculous about “shame”? I’m ashamed such petty intolerance over a mild difference of opinion exists on the Internet, but here we are.

Overwatch 2 will not be a next-gen game if it panders to last-gen setups. Ultrawide is THE next-gen setup right now. If this is not done now, then 2 years into Overwatch 2’s lifecycle this is going to be a massive issue where hardcore gamers all have ultrawide setups, and Overwatch 2 basically punishes you for having them. The message that sends is “please don’t play our game, we aren’t meant for hardcore gaming setups, we are a last-gen-focused game.” If there is a technical way to implement it, then just do it or Overwatch 2 is going to lose a fair bit of next-gen relevance.

Why… That’s so dumb
Just allow multiple aspect ratios

Uh huh that’s why 90% of like… People… Use 1920x1080… Ultra wide will take a long while, most people use 16:9

Probably because you can see more bigger but you don’t realistically see more, aspect ratio and FOV are not related

Or probably because you prefer a higher refresh rate which is much more important

Aaaanyway
