I heard some people who say that Overwatch 2 is in development hell, just to help you, nope, Overwatch 2 is not in Development Hell, if the game was developed for at least 10 years after their first public announcement before released without being officially canceled, then we can say it was in development hell, we were waiting for 2-3 years for Overwatch 2, so that game is not in development hell, people were waiting for Diablo 3 for 12 years, so that game is a good example of being in Development Hell, because Diablo 3 was in development for 12 years since 2000 to 2012.
Long story short, Overwatch 2 is not in development hell.

I wouldn’t use Diablo 3 as an example man, that game was hardcore garbage when it released. Impossible immunity combos, real life money auction house – it was a terrible release.

I remember from books that Development hell caused by sudden turns left-right up-down for various reasons. Product takes long to being developed. Red flag for development hell is sudden replacement of key figures and continuing delay for release (Papa Jeff left). As of now, OW II is in Development hell
Might remember wrong though, many years passed.
I use that game because it was also made by Blizzard.
not at the moment, no, but by 2023 it’ll be halfway there
If we wait Overwatch 2 for 10 years, now we can say it’s in development hell.
Which is why I wouldn’t use it as an example – you are basically pointing out how a sequel could take much longer to develop and still release in a horrible state by the same company.
How about we pick Mother 3 instead? Or Duke Nukem Forever, Kirby Return to Dreamland, Final Fantasy 15
It doesn’t change the fact that they stopped producing meaningful content in order to wait those 2 years for Overwatch 2’s release, and yet it’s still more than a year away.
At least you haven’t wait for 10+ years.
Don’t know if you meant to respond to me or the OP – but if you are responding to me I was simply pointing out Diablo III is a really bad example.
They left the Diablo franchise alone for basically a decade before releasing D3, which released in a very poor state by anyone’s standard.
I think the big difference would be they didn’t make any big promises of an upcoming sequel the whole time either.

Have you guys ever heard of Daikatana? It’s a fascinating story, it was announced and released in 3 years and the blow to studio actually became the spark for one the greatest games of all time - and the humbling of John Romero.

Nope, I haven’t heard of that
Oh I so much recommend you look it up, the game had a troubled development going through various staff changes, low morale, delays, poor yet unrelenting leadership… And to top it all of marketing was bad and public got fed up with it even before release.
But then eventually the money bags just said “fork it, finish what you have, put it in a box” and so it was. Probably one of the fastest development hells I know of and quite a tale. Classic really, Icarus, hubris and all that.

Its famous, and I played it too. Cant remember what it was about though
So forgettable wasn’t it? You’d expect such troubled development to result in a game so busted you’d be lucky if it didn’t burn the house down, but truth be told it was just a bland, boring, generic, incredibly short game years behind the industry.
And that’s why I find it so interesting. In the end all that ambition and pain to produce something so unremarkable, so boring and ameteurish, many indie devs replicated in 10 months in their garages.

I know its a bit of a meme, but I’d honestly say Cyberpunk was the best example of development hell, simply because it was in development for so long and they announced it so early that when they finally started talking proper release dates, my only reaction was just surprise that the game wasn’t out already. Add to that even more delays just to still somehow manage to end up with a rushed release, and OW2’s current issues seem like child’s play.

It’s certainly not in development heaven. Oooohhhh!
