i was a diamond dva main and now i’m gold. all my games have silvers and bronzes, and tanking for them is painful. i have to “learn how to play with low ranks”, cause playing the game right is throwing down here since your team will lose unless you accomodate them playing wrong.
I believe developers are in a dire situation right now; any attempt to solve this could make it more chaotic than it is now.
I still believe a simple ladder system would be the way, but it had to be done on season 0, with a full wipe and starting from scratch. 2-3 weeks of chaos, then it will settle by itself.
Now you can’t do that.
It can do the opposite. I didn’t care anymore to play comp. When they did that. You wanted me to play comp more. Than you have to give me better comp points across the board. Doing anything else will either play the same amount, or not bother.
I see what you are getting at. All are dependent on their skill relative to the playerbase.
But you are claiming that automatically means they cannot plot that MMR to SR.
If you go back to the blog post, its not a simple ranking (and if it was, I’d fully agree with you). There is a clear weighting - otherwise the mean in the bell curve they show would be 0.
The fact it’s not proves there are factors in the weighting that are beyond ranking and are more akin to “skill level” that SR can be plotted against.
Does this make sense?
Yes, I don’t like it either. One of my friends absolutely hates it. It’s clearly the intent, and whether it works or not is another story!
I’m claiming neither of us know. I’m also not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying I don’t see enough proof to convince me that you’re right. You do have personal experience and that surely means more than my lack of recent personal experience, but it’s also anecdotal. If you ask GreenTrotsky (a couple posts above) about his experience, it’s not like yours.
To me, given the power that MMR holds over the match making (BEFORE) and Rank is a byproduct of match results (AFTER), tells me that Rank influences nothing. It would be difficult to have MMR be the authority but also Rank have an impactful claim concurrently? I get that it is possible, but I’m seeking documentation that says that. I also get that they fudge stuff per Kaplan, like giving you some positive Rank for every win, even if you were supposed to win, but not doing that in the opposite.
Anyways, the real point of my example up there was, in a complex system that is fair and reflective of skill, the answer should be the same for all 3 outcomes. And that is MM makes matches based on your MMR and has an expectation of what the outcome is. It then adjusts your MMR accordingly and tallies an adjustment to your rank. It repeats that process until you hit a resistance and plateau whereby the adjustments start to become negligible.
Jumping on this guy in particular. I DO believe they can plot MMR to Rank as an estimated equivalent and do so with extreme precision. But I also believe it undermines all of the effort put into maintaining and processing MMR in the first place. Not saying I’m right here, but I also think it undermines the purity of what an MMR system is attempting to achieve - which is self correcting skill level assessment. You can do that already 100% even if Rank wasn’t even a concept.
We have zero context to the time frame of when GreenTrotsky was diamond. It’s again just an anecdote without longitudinal data (which you get from playing the game and seeing SR adjustments against win-loss ratio or seeing a streamer after a rank reset or even in OW1 you could have compared two GM streamers of different SR getting reset to 3900 every season and seeing their respective SR gains).
@greentrotsky - feel free to let us know when you were Diamond, when you got placed, if you played season 1 and how your rank updated have been.
I see you make a suggestion of how you believe it SHOULD work. I can’t actually argue whether it would be better or worse this way. I’m sure it’s a sound way to do it.
Hopefully in long awaited “part 2” of this will shed some light on MMR adjustments
Yeah, looking forward to it.

Today I did 7-5; I went from plat 2 to plat 2. I still don’t understand why I have to play against high diamonds and masters (in my category, dps). Is this game so dead that there are not enough players to make a match? My stats in overbuff are fine, so I’m not sure what’s going on.
I don’t get what I’m playing for.
EDIT: and I have to keep track of my wins and losses because the UI is so good.
EDIT2: What’s this guy doing in my matches? I don’t get it.

If this game wants me to stay in plat, it should tell me.
EDIT3: AGAIN!

My guess why they don’t just show the MMR rank. It probably be like Gold one game. Than constantly switch to Diamond, Plat, Gold, Plat etc. It has to quickly change you. Especially when you’re a smurf. So it just change extremes per game.
Then the problem is the anti-smurf system.
How on earth could I be considered a smurf if I have never reached a rank higher than plat? and I have like 35 seasons to back it up.
This is not a new account.
I shouldn’t be playing with high diamonds and masters, and if those players are at my skill level, they shouldn’t have been able to reach masters in the first place.
So the system is flawed in every possible way.
i placed silver in OW1 season 1 (technically a different system, they called it silver season 2). I climbed to gold very fast, then plat. after i reached plat, i very quickly got to the point where i would either reach diamond every season, or end the season in diamond. for the majority of OW1, I was in this state, hovering between 2850 and 3300 (my career high). Of course, as soon as I ever hit diamond, it immediately put masters and grandmasters on my enemy teams till I would be smashed back down to plat, because that’s how forced 50% works. At no point did i ever get more than 1 diamond only game in a row. Sometimes it even put me against a master with a gold on my team lol.
Anyways, I get to OW2, and I get ranked back at silver. Why? probably because the MMR system is trash and still thinks i’m silver because its memory is way too long and it remembers OW1 season 1. I climbed to gold then plat, and immediately got smashed back to gold. I would check and despite playing against plats and diamonds, i would always have silver and bronze healers and dps while playing in gold. It often feels unwinnable either for me or the enemy team, and it was a wakeup call to realize all the “forced winrate” complaints were absolutely true lol. It is not designed to give balanced matches at all. It intentionally gives unbalanced matches it can predict the outcome of, and balances your rolling and being rolled to be 50% of your games each.
I don’t think that’s what 50-50 win rate means.
At least the ranking system is absolutely trash.
Well, no. If you check, every single player in the game was placed well below their old OW1 SR. You are not being punished for your placement 6 years ago.
Did you play comp until the end of OW1? And did you finish in diamond in the final season?
Every time someone pushes this thread up, I think it’s Part 2 but it’s not Part 2 and it’s Part 1.
I haven’t seen a dev get ratio’d this hard on his own forums this hard in a loooong time LOL take the hint. This system is GARBAGE and needs to go. OW1 already had a hidden MMR but now there’s a hidden MMR and a hidden SR and both have absolutely nothing to do with the visible rank. Nice.
It’s exactly my experience too! It’s sort of the worst of all worlds. I wonder what the design behind this whole setup is.
So when is Part 2 coming?
Apparently working on it part 2.
22 days later , matchmaker is still total hot smoking garbage .
This game in its current state gives me depression. Comp is worse than gambling.
