Sounds like your just going to ride it out and see how it settles. Unless you get a dramatic drop in the player base or revenue from the game.
Balancing OverWatch is an almost impossible task anyway. You cant account for which class or Hero a player will pick. Skill in each different class will vary and skill with each individual Hero. There are to many Heroes with different skill ceilings, there are to many variables to balance.
What possible reason could there be to wait 3 weeks between these updates? Why allude to later updates at all if it’s going to take this long between each one?
From my experience so far after some hours in Quick Play + getting smashed into pieces everytime: You can feel that OW in general is already 6+ years old - everyone is either good, super good or even better (however the MMR functionality is based on). The learning curve is rather steep (as expected for a FPS game in 2022), so I had to understand that investing 4-8 hrs / day to learn all necessary skills, strategies, map awareness + taking notes about my mistakes after every game before even trying to touch ranked one day is the need. I’m not sure if turning a “fun” game into an unpaid full-time job could be my jam, but it is how it is
I honestly don’t think any of what was said about the new player improvements is true at all. I recently came back to this game after a couple year break while also bringing a friend in with me who has never played before, and we have been getting stomped. Not close matches, but absolutely stomped. I wasn’t that good before, and with a couple year break I would imagine my MMR wasn’t exactly high enough to be playing against OW League teams, but that seems to be all we get.
My friend is currently at 9 wins and 24 losses, with a current loss streak of 16 matches in a row. They are completely demoralized and don’t wanna play anymore, and honestly I don’t blame them. None of the people we play against are ever new like him. Heck, I have 300 hours in and most of them have more hours than I do. My friend is literally being slowly dipped into the matchmaking grinder and nomatter how many losses we get, it isn’t changing at all.
Whatever their plan with new players is, it isn’t working. If existing players bringing in friends only makes nonstop lopsided matches until the new player quits out of despair from being curbstomped over and over again, then they need to put a notice on the main menu letting players know that. I would have never subjected my friend to this game if the main menu said when I partied up with him “it seems your partner is new to the game. Be aware that your MMR is the only one that matters and he will be ego fodder for experienced players until he leaves your party and plays alone. Nomatter how many losses you get, you will NEVER get a more balanced match, and your friend will NEVER have fun playing with you.”, then I would have just saved him a couple hours of his time and not invited him at all.
I think I am at the point now where I legitimately do not give a flying cluck what the devs have to say on the game. They broke my trust entirely with OW2 and the game has been forsaken entirely in the name of monetization and pay-to-win schemes.
At this point, the devs saying “come back we fixed the game” is nothing more than snake oil in desperation to try and replenish player numbers lmfao
So are the match making adjustments in yet? as I don’t notice any improvement to the quality of my gaming experience, still squaring off against gold and plat tanks while I try and obtain my first ever rank as a tank still no wins after 77+ matches. and my win streak is nowhere near 50/50 in any mode, I hope they actually announce when it is as I can’t be bothered with ranked at least until its better
I’m 100% agreement with your 1st and 3rd bullet. I see no reason to believe that the 2nd bullet point exists. You can’t have expected SR AND be relative to population. You can observe trends and outcomes, but it doesn’t confirm that it’s a system outcome.
As far as myself, I play a few games of QP to warm up and each match is a stomp one way or another and there’s droves of leavers and toxic people and I decide, maybe next time I’ll start comp.
are we going to get an update as to how the trash matchmaking will be fixed?
if you are in gold, you should play gold players. if you are in silver, you should play silver players. this “publicly gold, but behind the scenes silver so all your healers and dps are silver” just makes it impossible for tank players. i literally lose games because i try to position correctly in a lobby full of 2D morons who refuse the high ground
i ended OW1 in diamond. i literally am not living in the same universe as these players but MMR insists i must play with them when i do not understand them at all and they can not understand me either
the things is, you could reach 50% winrate cause that is your rank. or you can reach 50% winrate because matchmaking is random and games make zero sense and are absolute chaos
if you watch any “unranked to gm” they are shocked at the amount of time they spend in low ranks in OW2, because absolute chaos reigns supreme and nothing makes sense
Before last week, there was even a cap on max SR so it was a scale with a beginning and an end - a closed distribution. So SR has been relative for 6 years.
They have talked about “certainty” of your match with your MMR.
Any decent statistician would be able to predict the SR of anyone after a decent number of games based on their MMR and historical data.
Don’t know why people waste their time with comp in a casual game. I’ve reduced OW down to doing my dailies each day and that’s about it. I’ll stick to competitive for real games.
I suspect even a poor statistician could make a plausible prediction. Predicting an outcome is not the same as using historic data to influence future actuals.
Also I would hope that from a mass population standpoint and the wildly different games between the last day of OW1 and the first day of OW2 that they NOT use prediction to influence anything whatsoever as that would not respect player skill and the changing landscape.
i think they might have better results if they didn’t have a strong pull down. it feels like you can win a lot of games and then it starts trying to stop you. and when it succeeds, it succeeds hard. then it’s yet another bodyblow beginning of the season. like stop it.
let people’s fair losses and wins run the show after a while. if my wins disagree with your stats, just shut up and wait and see. maybe your stats are wrong. i was a silver dva, ended ow1 in diamond, the entire lifespan of the game felt like the matchmaking was trying to put me back to silver, that’s a really long time to hold a grudge. i should not have had games with silvers and golds in diamond, while up against masters.
yeah, i mean when is this gonna start being rolled out this is so painful to play as tank.
Well then, as a thought experiment, consider the follow.
Let’s say an OW1 off tank main with 80+% on Zarya climbed from Silver and ended OW1 mid Diamond. Very stable MMR.
Let’s say this same player immediately goes into OW2. Let’s assume this player plays quite a bit and stabilizes their MMR, and as we’ve agreed , their Rank converges appropriately.
There are 3 possible outcomes. Rationalize why each of these 3 outcomes would have came to be…
