Overwatch® 2 Virtual Currency

I see they have a new currency for OW2 (Overwatch® 2 Virtual Currency).

I wonder if our current OW1 coins will translate over, OR will it just be useless?

Inquiring minds want to know.

If the currency is just loot box coins but no lootboxes anymore then I’m set for life with 47,000 coins stacked up from duplicates XD

Also curious what happens to all the unopened loot boxes people are sitting on.

Are they just deleted, or will Blizzard automatically open/convert them into credits?

^ more info like that definitely should have been in that stream…

The devs needs to sit down and ask people “what questions do you have?” to some non-dev before recording their update vids because I feel they always miss the mark when it comes to answering reasonable questions.

100k ow coins = 100 ow2 coins

Like idk why one guy was talking about push being a new game mode, we’ve already played it/seen it lol

It is new not everyone has played it and it’s a new mode compared to OW1

the contents are assigned at the point you’re awarded the box, so they’ll most likely they’ll just open them for you

I kind of suspect it will be something like that. They’ll not want old time player with tons of coin to be able to purchase everything they want as soon as the OW2 launches.

I think they’ll have to do something though. While they don’t owe anyone anything, as we don’t own anything in the game, imagine someone bought loot boxes for real $$$, and Blizz says, “nah, what you got out them is trash. Thanks for your money though. You can buy more of our new OW2 coin if you like, just follow this link” I think that might sour a few people’s taste a little.

more gacha game format.

the more I learn about this game the less I am willing to even consider downloading it

With the prepurchase bundle you get 2000 coins right from the start to either buy cosmetics or level up your battle pass considering most games have a max battle pass level of 100 I’d assume OW2 has that limit as well and 2000 coins get you like 20 levels. So maybe a conversion rate of 1000 to 100 might actually be it but even that would guarantee a full battle pass for some players right from the start.

Hopefully it’s a smooth 1 to 1 conversion.

Also why are they giving a currency away that no one knows what it’s used for?

Most likely to buy skins at the very least, and maybe to buy battle passes (or upgraded battle passes), like you could purchase game time with WoW gold possibly? Who knows how they will try to apply it. I suspect some sort of an expanded use will be added.

I hope so because i have close to 200k

I’m willing to bet even if you can convert it that the conversion rates won’t be very favorable to the player.

I suspect the same thing.

They made a point of giving OW2 currency a “new” name, which there is no reason to do if it’ll all be the same (OW1 currency = OW2 currency).

It’s a weird catch-22 for them though IMHO.
They need a way clear out the ton of coin long-time players like myself have accumulated, or else we’ll just come into OW2 and buy anything we want, and never “need” or have “want” to purchase OW2 currency for items for a long time. This will certainly hold true if you can purchase game passes with in game currency.

So just invalidating OW1 coin, and pointing out a TOS clause that states something like “You don’t own any in game item, and Blizz can change or remove any item at any time…yatta yatta yatta.” is certainly a possibility IMHO.

But that will rub a lot of people the wrong way, and come across as a little crass/corporate, especially to players who’ve stuck with OW since the very start. They would lose a lot of social capital with their player base, in an effort to increase their financial capital.

Yet the question remains. How will they deal with players with 100k+ OW1 coin, and all the skins and spays?

Someone will take the hit, and I suspect it won’t be Blizz.

how come there is still no official response to this mess, any twitter account we can contact?

I assume that credits will still be around to buy the standard set of skins for each character. I imagine the blue quality recolours will still be around. I reckon the old epic and legendaries could be accessible, too. I guess it’s possible that we could get Overwatch® 1 Virtual Currency simply by levelling up, instead of a lootbox. Outside of already existing OW1 loot, I believe that credits will be useless - but that’s still a LOT of loot for Johnny-Come-OW2 to acquire over time.

“Assume”, “imagine”, “reckon”, “guess”, “believe”…wouldn’t it be nice to actually know?

Hahaha absolutely not. 2000 credits is part of the $40 watchpoint pack. There’s no way 2000 of the current credits is worth bumping up that price so high. My guess is 1000 credits is worth $10 and old credits will be retired.

I’m not so sure that the old currency will be retired or converted. Allowing newcomers to earn old skins could be a way to get them to stick around and (from Blizzard’s point of view) a customer that sticks around could end up buying a battlepass or a store skin.
