Orisa, Doomfist and more use of common Nigerian Languages/Dialects

So, I came here looking to find out what Sigma says when he ults, but that reminded me. Orisa and Doomfist are the only non-English natives that only have English voice lines for their ults both as a friendly player and on the enemy team. Now, this isn’t a cause of any confusion, but the inconsistency sort of bothers me as the child of two Nigerians. I grew up speaking English, as my parents are from different regions of Nigeria, and thus spoke they English to each other (Their native tongues were different) I do however know a few phrases in each of their languages and would love to hear them used in the game. The way I see it, they would either both speak Yoruba (the language of the Yoruba people,) or Orisa would Speak Yoruba and Doomfist would Speak Khana (the language of the Ogoni people.) I can share some examples of some of the phrases if people are curious, and even ask my parents for translation their ult voice lines (Or similar phrases, like how Sombra says “Turn Out the Lights” and not EMP activated when on the enemy team) If anyone has any questions on why I choose those languages or anything else about Nigeria culture, I;d love to answer, but this post is already very long. Thank you!

Maybe its because they don’t have anyone that speaks fluent Nigerian? (not sass, I legit do not know if this is the case or not)

The reason Hanzo doesn’t speak much Japanese is because his voice actor can’t either, for example.

I would love that, they should have their own voicelines in their native tongue/s.

Maybe as Rocktopus says they didn’t have anyone who could speak nigerian. They could’ve just teach them how to pronounce the quotes. People say Lucio’s portuguese and Zarya’s russian is not that good, so why not try with nigerian languages?

I will never understand why people say that Zarya’s VA isn’t doing good work.

Zarya is the epitome of Russian stereotype in the game. If anything, her English sounds too " clean " at times compared to the accent she has when speaking Russian.

I don’t know, I don’t speak russian. Russian people say her accent is not credible though. It sounds good to me.

Simply put, the VA’s just haven’t been able to say the phrase properly in the language with the right tone, inflection, and accent. IT took Johnny Cruz, the guy who voices Lucio, almost 3 years to be confident enough in his Portuguese to start recording Voice lines for it. I’ve taken spanish for 5 years and I’m still not comfortable saying anything in it unless I absolutely have to, and I’m acutely aware of how white I sound doing it.

If Orisa’s and Doomfist’s VAs aren’t native speakers of their respective languages, it’s going to require a lot of work on their part to reach the standard of Quality they hold themselves to. As newer introductions to Overwatch, they haven’t had the time to reach that level of quality. It’s sheer luck that Moira’s VA is fluent in Gaelic to speak her ultimate voice line.

I would like to note that Reinhardt is also missing a German phrase for his ultimate, as is Pharah and Roadhog

we need a hero that uses british or jamaican slang

Tbf, Roadhog just laughs, which is fairly kiwi. I mean you cant shut those buggers up.

Also on the topic of bad VA’s look no further than junkrat. Dude sounds likes someone watched Steven Irwin and then tried to recreate that 20 years later, without rewatching.

Edit, i should preface, hes not bad as in bad at his job, hes actually quite good, i just feel that they could have cast someone from Australia.

Although, of the two, remind me which one lost to a pack of Emus?

Hey Emus are no joke mate, theyre like 6’4 and have razor blade feet. Honestly, im surprised blizzard didnt make them a hazard in junkertown, that randomly spawn and attack people.

To make it more accurate they should have also added in snakes in the buildings that strike you, spiders underneath the tires, and maybe a drop bear or two.

So do I, what’s your point?

Im concerned yet mildly interested. Unfortunately I lack razor blade feet. I am however taller than 6’4 so my point is, I can comfortably ride an emu into battle.

btw, so do reinhardt, pharah, torbjörn,…
not that im refuting your post, just pointing it out, fun facts

Just speak it. We have a lot of accents, so it’s fine. Plus we understand perfectly even if you don’t have good pronunctiation (there is people from other countries who are very rude if you don’t pronounce it super exactly and they pretend they don’t understand you).

Her Russian is much worse than her English. Sometimes it seems as the VA is struggling with pronunciation.

I suppose it’s fine as long as it sounds plausible enough for the English-speaking audience.

Good point. I am curious about this too.

Kind of like Lucio, thet picked DF’s voice actor for just liking how he sounded. Likely a similar reason. Heck when Lucio’s ones were added (from him learning them, bless him) they sounded much worse then the originals.

Dunno about Orisa, but likely a similar situation.

I do remember them saying they loved DF’s actor and kind of picked him based on the voice he gave him. I remember because everyone was sad it was not Terry Cruise
