Opens queue is awful

Context: I’ve been gm dps and tank for a while but decided to try to get support to gm for like a personal achievement, I did this season. I was like yo that’s cool then decided to try and get gm open queue since it’s the other comps rank I got placed, went 5-2 just 1 tricked 76 and did good each game and somehow the game dictated I should be placed plat 4 which alone is annoying. I thought maybe my mmr was high so if I played some more I could easily rank up, went 5-3 and went up 1 rank. After playing another 10-12ish games I’m just quitting open queue. Not only is playing with people well below my rank just annoying (for instance had a game I got 26k dmg in 14 mins on oasis but lost since half my team was getting countered but didn’t swap) but also Istg open queue is just less competitive it’s like people forget it’s an actual competitive mode and who knows maybe since I’m coming from role queue I just don’t know that open isn’t taken seriously or smth but Istg people just don’t try they’ll play 1 character the entire game without even thinking of swapping nor flexing. In short open queue sucks I give up and I’m going back to role queue, just curious as to see if anyone genuinely enjoyes that mode and why

Open Queue was always awful. That’s why they moved to Role Queue.

Open Queue was how the game was designed to be played. Role Queue is required because the Overwatch community is actually garbage.

No, it was the initial design that lead to things like GOATS, which lead to the dev team later changing their design direction to role queue, which we’ve now been at for way longer than we’ve been at the initial open queue only design.

Just because something came first doesn’t mean it’s better. The opposite is more often the case.

Actually, per dev comments, Role Queue was implemented on the desires of the community. Not to stop GOATS.

Your reading comprehension isn’t very great. I legitimately stated OQ was garbage.

There’s a lot of desires of the community that the devs don’t act on. And if the desire is so loudly expressed that they chose to add something as influential as Role Queue, I’d say the devs probably agreed with it to a large degree.

Missed that. Usually when people say things like “Open Queue was how the game was designed to be played.” it’s in defense of OQ, so my brain automatically filtered out the part where you said it’s awful.

I stand behind what I said tho.

Okay but the difference is, 99% of changes offered to devs by the idiots on the forums are self-serving and overall unhealthy for the game.

Match Quality DRASTICALLY improved with the implementation of Role Queue. The consistency of Match Quality also drastically improved.

When you compare something like Role Queue to pretty much any suggestion made by the brainlets on the forums, its not hard to understand why the devs don’t read the forums for feedback on the state of the game.

Because it was. Unfortunately, the community abused their privileges and took advantages of the flaws in the system to the point that the devs were forced to enforce stricter policy…

It went from no limits, to Open Queue (one hero selected per team) to Role Queue, to 5v5.

We all do this sometimes…

Open queue attracts a lot more “casual” players and people who can’t just move on. I’ve played a bit just to have fun and people are just constantly flaming/trolling the entire time. I wouldn’t take it serious and just learn the intended experience instead of spending time there unless you enjoy it.

We’ve had some different experiences when queuing solo, I guess - in both Open and Role Queue I’ve encountered people literally dancing with the opposing team instead of helping contest the objective while I get mowed down. I have been fortunate in that I haven’t encountered anyone being verbally abusive in any game mode. The difference for me with Open Queue vs. Role Queue is that I have a lot less flexibility in how I adapt to the opposing team. It doesn’t do a lot of good to be stuck on a support character, where part of what I bring to the table is dependent on proximity, when the rest of your random group is composed of Window, Hanzo, Sombra, and Wrecking Ball, and none of them bother to stay in range. Chasing them only leads to a higher likelihood of dying. Granted, when queuing as a team, this frustration is dramatically lessened because we are actively coordinating, and granted, with Open Queue, you can just as easily find yourself being steam rolled by a seemingly unkillable, three tank group, but I generally find having my options restricted also restricts my fun.

Role queue is no better. In fact I would say it is significantly worse right now.

I would say all is worse now.

Emphasis on this part of your sentence actually.

It’s a very boomer mentality to be resistant to change and optimization.

Open queue ain’t worth playing. Most people don’t understand counter picks and so on. You can get teams that want to just run 5 dps into triple tank double supp. Role queue can be rough due to tank diff with only one tank, but at least you get a tank, and supports.

I’ve never touched open queue since role queue came out but I still respect the players who do take it seriously. Any comp mode that isn’t the most popular gets called a joke and I may have made similar remarks about it in the past. But I don’t think it’s really fair to say that anymore especially given the current state of role queue.

This isn’t unique to open queue though. In general I’ve found people mostly don’t know how to actually play the game. The difference in open queue is that you’re able to freely choose any role to counter pick yourself, without having to rely on what are most likely children to do it for you. How is that worse than being restricted to a single role?

Exactly my thoughts. Sure, there’s people who don’t take it seriously, but there is also just as many in the other modes too. In open queue if you do take it seriously and rank up past plat or diamond you’'re way less likely to get silvers and golds in your matches just because there’s a ton more players for the matchmaker to chose from once the roles aren’t a factor. As a support player in role queue one match I could be in a masters game, the next in silver. At least in open queue it’s usually less extreme. Not saying it’s perfect by any means, far from it. But at least it’s playable.

Also. Nobody really knows play numbers for each mode. Open queue is promoted alongside role queue in the menu as an equal, or some would say even as the main mode as it’s one click away not two. I think it’s a mistake to assume it’s less popular.

Role que people going into open Que thinking it’s role Que misunderstanding open Que. hilarious :joy:

Honestly, sometimes I find a team of 4 DPS quite fun. It’s certainly more fun than the same old matchup game after game. And I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’d much rather have 3 DPS on my team than 2 DPS and a DPS playing support because they didn’t want to wait.

This whole open queue is some second rate game just isn’t true. Role queue has never worked. Ever. The only time it was even remotely playable even in OW1 was when you used LFG. And now that’s gone and matchmaking is more terrible than ever. Why anyone would even chose to play role queue is beyond me.

OQ is AWESOME.

Just, get better.

The point of open queue is to not be confined to what you think is meta. Either you one-trick and stick it out regardless of counters and comps or you true flex to any hero, any class, and are able to think outside of the 1-2-2 box. I prefer open queue and it matches my playstyle more. If you are stubborn about 1-2-2, counters, comp synergies, and meta heroes, you will not fare well in open queue. I usually have the most fun when my team comp is very unorthodox and looks bad on paper but it works because people are focused on themselves and not trying to confine people to how you think this game should be played.

That doesn’t matter if the rest of your team doesn’t try. Regardless of how good you are or how much you counter pick if it’s a legit 1v5 or even a 4v5 you’ll probably lose. Idk if I originally included the one game I had but one opened queue game I went 52-4 in 14 mins with 26k dmg and still lost being a prime example of only so much you can do just to lose
