Open Queue Mostly 222. Quick Impressions

Just finished my Open Queue Placements, and wow. I really had a great time with that, the most fun i’ve had since they introduced Role Queue.

I recorded my team’s role selections.

Game 1 - 222
2 - 222
3 - Attack - 042 / Def - 312 (i stayed dps first round, it was going well)
4 - 213!
5 - 222
6 - 222
7 - 222
8 - 222 (i picked last, went heals but later took soldier to counter Pharah, and someone switched to heals!)
9 - 222
10 - 213

Not a single “5dps game” that everyone loves to talk about, but i never saw those before role queue either. I think it’s overblown.

I have to say that i do play in a duo. She played mostly support. I played mostly dps, a few tank, and started one game as support to fill. However, i love that i was able to swap roles and go hit scan to counter the Pharah. Like, i just love that you can take it upon yourself to counter.

Some quick impressions of Open Queue after just 10 games.

  • Not one single “dps sucked, or tanks didn’t push” no finger pointing.

  • Instant queues

  • Mostly had 222, and people tried. (saw this pre-role queue too, actually)

  • Not one leaver on either team.

  • Match quality seemed better somehow.

  • Flexing is the MOST fun you can have with Overwatch, in my opinion. I tank if the team needs it. I don’t want to Queue for it and be stuck.
If the team needs a support, it’s FUN to hop on that for a round. It seemed like we had some decent flex players in our games. Maybe after all this role queue, people actually have learned more heroes.

Of course, i’d need to play more, but i feel like Open Queue was less toxic, more fun, and the match quality was somehow better than the role queue games. I feel like something is off with the role queue matchmaking, and forced 222 gameplay feels really stifling. We had a lot of 222 in open queue, but it wasn’t forced. Something about that feels different. Because anyone could flex to counter if they wanted, and sometimes they did. Took some of the frustration away.

I think Overwatch feels best, works best, and is more fun with Open Queue!
I mean, it feels like a return to the OW i loved for 17 seasons.
Please keep it around, Blizz!

I’m loving open queue right now, but I wonder what would happen if it went live. Maybe it’s only good right now because the people playing it want to be there.

You lucky one.
I had bronze player teaching me how to dps and telling me that I suck :man_shrugging:

All I did was standing behind watching how he dies in the front haha

What made you get so low on open queue?

How would I know. Unranked acc :man_shrugging:

Also it felt very weird to play at beginning. Its been what, 8 month since RQ was introduced? OQ is way harsher than RQ.

Need 250 more sr for GM on open queue. Ill hit it im positive.

You were lucky, my games werent good at all, majority was bad, with toxic people, people arguing about roles, blaming, 4 dps often just like in old times. Horrible experience. I had only few nice games.

Just a little update, played maybe 6 more games today.

Still loving it Open Queue!

Good games. Decent comps. I’m thinking it’s been about 80% 222. But the off comps are 132 or 231, and have worked out just fine.

Losses don’t even feel as frustrating, because you had the chance to flex and make something happen. It feels like you have more control over the outcome. So, a loss isn’t falling directly on “tanks didn’t push” (which is how role queue feels to me) and if you lose, queue up and get a new game in a minute.

Also, the system is shooting me up close to 2200 SR pretty quick. Compared to my main dps right now in the 1800’s which is frustrating because the games feel much harder for some reason. Like i’m in some smurf queue or something.

The main difference is that i feel like i actually get to PLAY the darn game here in Open Queue. There’s no throwers, leavers, toxicity. Decent teams all around allow me to get something going. Where in Role Queue it feels like everyone is on edge, frustrated, and pointing fingers at the other roles. And when the team isn’t working, it’s hard to shine. I guess i feel like i get to shine a bit in Open Queue.

Most fun i’ve had in ages! Keep this going, Papa Jeff!

I saw more toxicity than in normal comp. Leavers are in practicaly same numbers as in normal comp. And throwers? People really dont have reason to throw/derank in arcade comp mode which will be gone in 4 weeks.

Old system had some benefits, i am not denying that. But overaly 222 had to be implemented because old comp was starting to be extremely bad in last few months. You can probably see more 222 in old comp now because people learned to play like that in 222 role q and are used to it.

Both comp system are not really great, they need to do some kind of hybrid where decisions made by your team mates wont affect you that much as you actions should affect your rank. And give more freedom what to play. But still trying to force 222.

Most comp matches were 2-2-2… its those who screamed “XY GO TANK/HEAL!” while instalocking Genji and then we had 1-2-3 or even 1-1-4. I even won a few matches with 4 dps hog and lucio for example but that were ages ago, where we didnt had broken heroes and balancing were kinda OK. Yeah… it was the year 2016/17.

Hardcounter must not exist in a shooter. Just because hero X is not on the map hero Y anihilates everything is neither balanced or skill based gameplay. Its like operating an Abrahams vs a cat and telling everyone you won against the cat because you were just better.

You are Polyanna or soo lucky.

I played a few matches and everone blame for play 2-2-2.

Dps switch we need 2nd tank!

Healer asking for 2nd heal cuz he is not enough for healing whole team.

Tank is dying cause of low heal and rage switch dps.

Open que is horrible like always.

5 DPS can work. It’s just that the 5 DPS needs to learn how to play a 5 DPS composition. 6 DPS can even work too with Soldier off healing in crucial spots or events.

We did this, I played Soldier, had 8k healing, we won the game never leaving point. Open Queue is super fun and reminds me of the good times I used to have, I was Pro-RQ at first, and then the que times and matches we’re absolute garbage. Being able to flex is what made this game fun for me, as a player between bronze and plat (played in both, not much difference).

I was against RQ, but some heroes are more fun with forced balance, imo. Like Zarya; I enjoy her with another tank and some heals but often struggle to get as much value in open queue with her at my rank.

I’m just under gold in open que now, some people don’t shoot the bubble, others are braindead and do, just bubble the right people and enjoy and 70%+ charge, I’m silver, so I’m sure someone higher ranked will do even better with it.

I think the difference between you and Xion is that you picked tank while Xion picked DPS so ofc you’ll have a better experience. Your opinion is biased, my friend.

Idk if we are playing the same game but ive played around 30 games in that mode and its no different just that people dont care at all because its arcade.

Never ever played tank or support in my life (ok Zen a few times).

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! My first game of open queue was exactly what I remembered from the old days. Three instalock DPS, then I picked support, then the 5th person picked Soldier and typed “shield plz” in chat. Last guy picked Hog, they all start arguing about swapping but nobody did and we got annihilated by the enemy running a 2-2-2 comp.
