Just finished my Open Queue Placements, and wow. I really had a great time with that, the most fun i’ve had since they introduced Role Queue.
I recorded my team’s role selections.
Game 1 - 222
2 - 222
3 - Attack - 042 / Def - 312 (i stayed dps first round, it was going well)
4 - 213!
5 - 222
6 - 222
7 - 222
8 - 222 (i picked last, went heals but later took soldier to counter Pharah, and someone switched to heals!)
9 - 222
10 - 213
Not a single “5dps game” that everyone loves to talk about, but i never saw those before role queue either. I think it’s overblown.
I have to say that i do play in a duo. She played mostly support. I played mostly dps, a few tank, and started one game as support to fill. However, i love that i was able to swap roles and go hit scan to counter the Pharah. Like, i just love that you can take it upon yourself to counter.
Some quick impressions of Open Queue after just 10 games.
-
Not one single “dps sucked, or tanks didn’t push” no finger pointing.
-
Instant queues
-
Mostly had 222, and people tried. (saw this pre-role queue too, actually)
-
Not one leaver on either team.
-
Match quality seemed better somehow.

Flexing is the MOST fun you can have with Overwatch, in my opinion. I tank if the team needs it. I don’t want to Queue for it and be stuck.
If the team needs a support, it’s FUN to hop on that for a round. It seemed like we had some decent flex players in our games. Maybe after all this role queue, people actually have learned more heroes.
Of course, i’d need to play more, but i feel like Open Queue was less toxic, more fun, and the match quality was somehow better than the role queue games. I feel like something is off with the role queue matchmaking, and forced 222 gameplay feels really stifling. We had a lot of 222 in open queue, but it wasn’t forced. Something about that feels different. Because anyone could flex to counter if they wanted, and sometimes they did. Took some of the frustration away.
I think Overwatch feels best, works best, and is more fun with Open Queue!
I mean, it feels like a return to the OW i loved for 17 seasons.
Please keep it around, Blizz!
