One Tricking Winston in Competitive is entirely possible

Well at least up to Masters, I managed to do it recently this season.

I guess not switching sometimes really does teach you how to perfect a certain hero, because you have to think real hard about the decisions you make in game, especially against heroes that hard counter you. There is a fine line between feeding and feasible play that will benefit your team playing this hero.

Yes, I could have switched, and although it feels like hell, outplaying your hard counters is the most satisfying feeling.

How can you have fun one tricking Winston? Like seriously, in every game there is a Hog, Brig or Reaper who completly steal your sole…

Thank you for posting this. I love playing Winston. He is my favorite tank.

If you have any tips, please post them. I’d also take some gameplay footage if you’re willing to share.

Its not fun getting hard countered of course, but it really did force me to make my decisions in game really carefully.

The main things that went through my mind when playing into my counters was;

  • Always patiently wait for cooldowns
  • Jumping onto high ground above/behind the enemy
  • Sneak into enemies from high ground then jumping out
  • Always Punch-landing
  • Dont ult in lost team fights

Winston is a viable main tank. The problem is that winstons at lower levels like silver and gold tend to be god awful. They can’t even shield dance properly. Also, a lot of the leaps tend to be high risk leaps into ENEMY teams trying to take out one squishy instead of trying to just leap in, disrupt the enemy and jump out.

So many times, I see a winston dive me on S76 thinking “it’s an easy kill” only for the biotic field to come down, headshots rain and a dead winston. Even if there’s a dva, there’s never the dva with d-matrix to absorb the damage. D-va’s usually trying to get her own solo kills.

I’m curious as to what a plat tank thinks a good winston shield is. Care to elaborate?

Wanna know what a Silver tank thinks it is?

Not particularly but I’ll bite.
What does a silver tank think a good winston bubble is?

Personally I think it’s after going in on a dive (either by walking or jump pack if necessary) to protect himself/any dps or supports/tanks that went with him after a target(s) and to enable jumpback to come back off cooldown (if used to engage), to either go to the next target or retreat.

Here’s some free advice.
While it’s not a bad use of the shield, you should be aware of what it can block. You can negate an ana if you place it well. If the enemy has beat then it best used to block the beat, even if its just one or two peoe, that value is huge. Same with trance.
It is not a purely defensive ability.
Or not defensive in the self defence way.

True, I guess that’s not the only way I ever think to use it of course. Just the most frequent.

I only brought it up because of the way the dude phrased it. “can’t even shield shield dance properly”. It is the most underutilised piece of his kit and this dude that hasn’t broke out of pbsr is acting like it’s some simple thing.

Hmm you’re right, but if they have a lot of damage that can kill your bubble instantly, i would never jump in as it is usually a death sentence.

Instead i’d peel damage from around corners/high ground and wait for my team to engage with me.

Another huge tip that i can give is engaging or jumping into the enemy moments before YOUR dps use their team-wiping ultimates. (You have to coordinate with them) The enemy would have wasted a LOT of cooldowns on you playing winston which gives your dps a huge opportunity to use their ultimates and increase your team’s odds of winning a teamfight.

Nanoblade genji after the enemy wastes sleep dart/shield bash/flash on a Winston? Instant win.

Question When you engage with Winston and you have ult up at what hp do you pop ult after taking damage? ( Assuming you are going in with the intent on being aggressive )

Onetricking any hero is possible.
