One shield lock

At this point, we should just bite the bullet and try a one shield lock. It boggles my mind that 132 has been tested but not this.

Look, double shield will pretty much always be a problem. It even being viable is annoying. Even after the rein buffs that were supposed to help stop double shield, its still meta, and even if it wasnt, the second best meta would be sigma rein.

That’s not even mentioning potential future heroes who have shields. Blizzard isn’t very good at tank design as a whole, but at this point I think trying out a one shield lock could save this game and the state of tanking.

I’m sure a certain Falcon is lurking with his graphic, but in case you don’t know, one shield lock is a system where between rein, sigma and orisa, only one can be on a team at once. There are zero tank combination restrictions outside of those. Players would be able to q for tank in a way that let them get dibs pick on a shield, but both tanks could play off shield if they wanted to.

For this game, a one shield lock at this point has almost no downsides. Shield tanks would be buffed to play with an offtank rather than a shield tank, no more double shield compositions of any kind, makes developing future shield tanks easier since they don’t have to butcher their designs to play around other existing shields, and since the actual tanks would be playable, we’d likely see a reduction in queue times.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. Repeatedly nerfing orisa sigma and the supports involved is not going to work. Buffing the other tanks will just put us into the same situation we were in 2 years ago. Sure, maybe a one shield lock wouldn’t work, but we could at least give it a shot.

What do you guys think? Would you be willing to try a single shield lock? If not, why?

I made this suggestion over a year ago and it wasn’t a fan favourite. :(((

I would still like the option of 2 shields tanks played together just not meta. Adding restrictions to the tank will not in my opinion improve the tanking experience.

Or just rework Sigma into an Maintank

They should just remove Sigma’s shield, he’s the only reason double shield comps of any kind really exist.

Can we lock hitscan first and see how it goes?

I mean if we’re gonna lock someone else’s choice of hero based on random people and arbitrary factors, should propably start with the roster that isn’t tied up in synergies and has 17 heroes instead of 8.

so youd rather enforce a shield tank on literally every game rather than letting double shield become garbage because of the devs. that would mean no more double non shield tanks as well. to me no shield tank is something to look forward to in a game cause its refreshing when you do have that chance to face two shields. i personally would hate this because when you have a shield and non shield tank most of those synergise while double shield only synergizes because of the shields. So your literally forcing the tanks to have a coherent lineup instead of them deciding that. decisions on heroes and abilities are what make this game play how it should, so when you force synergy the teams are both immediately better than they should be becaus they didnt choose to syn ergize they were forced too.

If you read the post, it says a shield tank is not forced. Theres just a maximum limit of one per team.

alright true i mean thats less harmful i just dont like changes that straight up make the game easier and if your practically forced onto a synergizing tank combo thats what this change wouldve been

I guess the problem is barrier tanks shouldn’t have ranged spam damage, like Sigma has 22 meters of range and Orisa has more.

These types of tanks kind of force mirror matches (because they provide a barrier and they also have barrier braking shots of their own) and tank duels end up being about spamming at each other’s barriers.

Spam Poke damage from tanks should be barrierless or off-tank levels of situational defenses like DM and Zarya’s bubbles.

I get this, but I think the problem is in order to make them not meta it requires butchering the shields to the point that it’s almost required to have two to be decent which part of the problem currently.

I would suggest taking a look at Greyfalcon thread, he has some ideas how to do it without over nerfing shield tanks.

Ok, but what if I wanna play Sigma, Winston, or Rein, but the other tank picked Orisa before I could slot my choice in?

Just nerf Sigma’s shield to 500-600 and there will not be a shield problem. It’s all about him

Cant see a reason why 1 shield will not work. They were crying that new double shield is too weak, then realise how to still abuse it, I believe if all tanks would be nerfed to oblivion, there still would be some sort of meta which would be defined by tanks still. One shield lock is a key, dont know why devs waiting.

Where would you put Sigma or Winston? Would some people just queue for Reinhardt and Orisa? Sigma’s kit is way too flexible and generalist to be a shield main tank. It would be a mess

the problem of “double shield” meta is not a shield but ability to spam sitting behind it as a tank, we just need so spread up orisa and sigma and may be buff orisa shield back to 900 hp. (I think 750 hp would be enough tbh)

Sorry but it’s bad enough that we can’t switch anymore to other roles unless we go to “open queue” which is just memes at this point and barely taken seriously. This would just make that even worse, would mean the other tank couldn’t switch to shield to make up for the other one being bad.

While I don’t really like the idea, I’m not opposed to trying it.
It could work out, if we outfit the tanks for it to work properly.
