Ya and they capped how much funds would go to it, pocketed the rest.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they do the same thing here.
Crowdfunding itself isn’t so bad but 25%, really? At least have as much decency as Amazon and go 50-50.
Cheapskates.
I’m pretty sure most tournaments do this. Valve has been doing that in CS:GO for years. Riot does it in League of Legends I’m pretty sure and by extension I assume they do it in Valorant as well. No outrage there, by the way. Quite to the contrary, people thought it was a great idea back when that model got introduced.
This thread is just proof that whatever Blizzard does, be it good or neutral, people will cry about it on the forums just because it’s Blizzard who did it. No wonder they got tired of reading the garbage people spout on here.
No way am I supporting that. They don’t even treat their league players with any damn respect
I think people are little miffed about the whole thing because in Blizzard’s case they’ve been corporatizing the hell outta their esports league since it’s inception. They REALLY wanted to be like a proper sports league that you’d see on ESPN or something and having to rely on crowdfunding is just really funny. Nobody really bats an eye to Riot’s or Valve’s way of funding esports tournaments because they’ve always tried to foster more grassroots funding for their scenes.
I don’t think crowdfunding is a bad thing. I see it as supporting the teams.
Same with WoW world cup. The fans payed the players’ reward. xD

Then complain about that. Complain about their monopolization and corporatization of Overwatch esports. Complain about them banning community tournaments. Complain about their weird streaming strategies. Complain about them taking a grassroots phenomenon and transforming it into the NBA. Where are those complaints?
Instead you decide to complain about the one thing that’s arguably a benefit. Wise choice.
For the first time in Overwatch history, we will be crowdfunding the World Cup prize pool
This is pathetic. There’s no other way to put it.
I have no words.
Tbh, I prefer crowdfunding over whatever some high level executive dreams would be an effective use of resources for esports.
Let’s the players have a bit of a vote on things.
I don’t think crowdfunding is a bad thing. I see it as supporting the teams
Crowdfunding isn’t inherently bad, it depends on the cut they take for themselves, and judging by how much they take for themselves in this case, if the 75% is true, i’d say that this one is pretty damn bad, and it doesn’t support the teams much at all, when compared to other eSports.
Instead you decide to complain about the one thing that’s arguably a benefit
What benefit? Do you even know what you’re talking about here? If they take 75% the teams only have 25% to split among each other or put into a prize pool for the top 3 teams. How in the hell is that beneficial for all the teams?
Instead you decide to complain about the one thing that’s arguably a benefit. Wise choice.
Just because other corporations do it does not make it any more or less laughable.
Multi-billion dollar corporation throwing their own event and trying to spin it as a grassroots crowd-funding necessary deal, and then taking a 75% cut of that is hilarious in how pathetic it is. Only think funnier is someone actually trying to defend them.
You’re welcome to boycott.
But I guarantee it will still get funded because most people don’t care about petty outrage.
I can contribute my old Google Pixel 5a smartphone to the prize pool. For serious inquiries please contact me.

It doesn’t change anything, yes. The laughable part, however, is that no one cared when everyone else did it. In fact, people supported it. I played Dota when Valve introduced it and people were celebrating it. It’s just when Blizzard does it where it becomes “laughable” for these forums. People in here are just special in their own way
Didn’t DotA 2 do this? Iirc made headlines with one of the biggest prizepools of esports history.
With OW2’s context this does have a different look to it though, for sure.
Imo, this isn’t the first time that an esports tournament was crowdfunded…OWWC isn’t the first tournament to do this, and I sincerely doubt it will be the last.
I do agree that Blizzard taking 75% of the profits is very concerning (and I say this as the resident OWL fan here). But that’s why there is such a thing as voting with your wallet.
You can’t buy PvE content with OW coins. Season 6 PvE costs $15. No coins/tokens allowed.
You can buy everything else with coins….why would this be different?
