Ok lore wise with Cassidy

Ashe knows him as McCree, so once again strictly lore-wise, it wouldnt make sense that she calls him Cassidy now

Or am i wrong?

I think they just changed his name without regard to lore

Just simple Mccree → Cassidy Find replace

Ashe may be a criminal, but even she doesn’t deadname.

There was technically a poorly done minor attempt at lore outside of the game but no one references his old name or decision to change so its totally moot.

He knows her real name, why wouldn’t she know his real name? If they were close, they’d know that their prefer they alias names.

It does make sense if she knows he went back to his real name.

The name has been retconned. Which means he has always been known as cassidy in lore.

Yeah, but where in lore has it been told the she knows he went back to his real name, that’s kinda where im getting at

Because we don’t even have much of the OW2 lore yet.

The twitter post with the name reveal kinda of implied that, lore wise, he was McCree during most of the OW lore and then, at some point around the recall, returned to Cole.

Blizzard kinda of shot themselves on the foot in this one, lore wise everyone should know him as McCree but since they decided to change the name this way rather than a straight up retcon then we have awkward situations were they cant name him on that period of the lore.

Why wouldn’t they be able to name him? He is still supposed to be cassidy across the lore.

They just said old media won’t be changed (probably because it is too much of a resource waste)

Probably didnt explain myself well, Is not that he cant be named, is that they cant use the McCree name so it kinda of creates awkward lore because on that period he was McCree to everyone in the OW universe and now all of the sudden everyone knows him as Cass.

Like, straight up retconing the name to Cass, so he was alwyas Cass across the entire OW lore, would have been better than having like an awkward perios of time where his name is completely redacted

This is kinda how i was trying to explain why, lore-wise it doesnt make sense

They’ll probably just retcon it and say “his name was Cassidy all along”.

They didn’t retcon it actually. They made it an in-canon decision for the character for some reason.

Looks like he’ll still be known as Cassidy though in all future media no matter what, which we’ll just have to accept.

Cause Blizzard played it off as lore but they want to get rid of everything McCree related to appease the snowflakes

They didn’t change it for the playerbase.

The name was changed for the devs (Team 4). They wanted it for themselves. It’s the one thing that isn’t due to demand.

Not wanting to associate with a former employee has nothing to do with “snowflakes”.

Its not even that it doesnt make sense, like a simple scene going like someone calling McCree and him being like “Its Cass actually” would be fine lore wise. The problem is that they cant use the name McCree anymore so something like that cant happen, it can be explained as happening off screen but still leaves a weird lore gap.

Tldr: it should have been a full on retcon rather than a lore related decision.

You’re trying to tell me a bunch of grown adults get scared of a name?

Nah fam, people on twitter were demanding a name change so it happened

Do you even know why it was changed?

I’ve lost the last brain cell I had reading your reply. They’ve even explained why it was changed for themselves.

Tbf, McCree was likely never his name from the get go (Cole being what they ended up settling on in the end). Sombra has implied it for as long as she’s in the game.

She has a voiceline with him, and he’s telling her that whatever she’s heard, his name isn’t “Joel”. He didn’t deny that his name isn’t McCree.

I’m baffled that you even think they’re genuine about that

They’d do anything to save their reputation but believe what you want
