Notes on the cardboard skins

For anyone thinking of buying the cardboard skin bundle, I wanted to offer some thoughts on them. I already had the cardboard Rein skin and wanted to get the bundle for if my stack wanted to be silly and go full cardboard so I bought the pack, but have some things to point out.

Primarily, the post will be about the audio for them, but I do want to acknowledge that I love the look of the skins and the amount of thought and detail that went into every one of them. The designers did a great job on every aspect of them, as well as the corresponding highlight intros and combat actions, which will be pointed out.

I’m a Brig main, and the first thing I noticed was a “whooosh” sound while in the ship waiting for a match to start. I thought it was a teammate that hadn’t fully rendered for me that was dancing around me, but I quickly realized that it was the cardboard flapping. I hadn’t noticed it out of spawn but it might be because of all the action going on around me. I noticed that the impact sounds were different, like the flail, the whipshot, and shield bash all sounded softer. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely sounds like you’re covered in cardboard and hitting them with a cardboard mace and shield. It’s really immersive. But at the same time, as I’ve heard the regular sounds for so long, it really threw me off.

Also with Brig, I got POTG and have the highlight intro where she jumps and swings her mace to the ground. Usually, the whip hitting the ground is super loud, louder than the highlight intro in the skin selection screen (I think this might be an audio bug but I don’t care enough to report it), but with the cardboard skin, it was actually more of a soft “fump”, like you would expect a cardboard box hitting the ground to sound. Nice detail there. Another funny detail was once when I died, I ragdolled and I joked to my duo that the sounds of the cardboard hitting the ground sounded exactly like if you threw a box down the stairs.

Next I tried the Bastion skin. THIS is the one where I REALLY noticed the differences. I noticed the flapping and cardboard-on-cardboard sounds more, like when you’re walking. Your footsteps are quieter, and your primary fire is reminiscent of the Lego skin fire (quieter, less metallic, and more of a “thunk thunk thunk” than a “pow pow pow”. The grenade and ultimate missiles are more of a “foo” and definitely quieter and less noticeable for the enemy team. The grenade reminded me of the “foo” of a spitball that was lodged in a straw and finally made it out (maybe not THAT quiet, but similar in concept). It really messed with me how quiet everything felt as Bastion.

As Reaper, the gunshots sounded like normal. I felt like the footsteps were quieter, but maybe because I don’t play as Reaper as much. As with Bastion, I noticed the cardboard-on-cardboard sounds when walking.

I didn’t get a chance to try out the DVA but I imagine it is similar.

All-in-all, I have to give the designers credit where it’s due: the skins are really creative, look great, sound great, and most importantly, the little details not in the match like the highlight intros being changed to match just mean so much to me. However, I feel they did TOO WELL of a job. The combat audio messed me up a little, since I’m so used to how the default sound cues are.

What are your thoughts on the skins?

That I’m fundamentally opposed to paying 44 dollars for them. That’s about it.

Oh - what’s up with dva’s jeans? The holes look terrible but I guess you gotta get some bare leg in there to sell them? I have no idea.

The Dva one has a funny sounding primary fire. I like the skins in general, but kinda hope they don’t keep making more. The novelty will wear off pretty quickly if so many heroes have the same skin. Big fan of the rein one when it came out, even tho I rarely play him.

That’s fair. It does feel overpriced and money-grabby, but I have a little disposable income and like I said, my team likes to be silly from time to time so I justify it by thinking “This will give me a fun day or more of matches with people I enjoy spending time with, so it will be worth it.”

I don’t usually go for $20 skins because like you said, that’s way too much for one skin, especially a recoloring. But for a fun day with friends, $40 is cheaper than most other forms of entertainment these days.

isn’t it ironic how some of the best skins in the game are some meme skins?

Probably a subconscious “poverty” detail.

id rather burn my money then buy a skin in ow2 for 20 bucks, no matter wich one. Would love to have the bastion version, but nah, not gonna pay 20€ for one skin, thats a third of a game or even a full indie game. i get the BP thats it.

I have mixed feelings about the skins. I kinda like the D.Va one but mostly because of how D.Va looks and not so much her MEKA (although those side fans look pretty cool). The whole cheap, cardboard theme is i dunno, kinda silly.

More like a “take a look at my thighs” thing.

Sound design in OW is pretty darn good…i prob would never use any of them but I do think they’re very well made

Tangent - By contrast, even though I think the word is still out on just about every aspect of MR, the one place I have no doubts is the sound design there…it’s absolute crap…feel like many of the sounds there may as well be for cardboard skins

Yeah I love the Brig one so much, so glad they gave her a skin this season, and shortly after Reins cardboard one came out I recommended Brig and now theres one for her, I’m so happy!

You are disappointed that they actually put effort into the skins for once? That is a new one…

You can do it, Wally. I believe in you!
