He just doesn’t seem very good at all, I’ve not seen any nice plays or anything in his kit impress me much.
On paper a lot of this stuff sounds fantastic and OP, but the reality is he seems like the weakest hero since Orisa.

Immortality field barely seems to last more than a few moments before it’s destroyed, and it encourages clumping up which is in my experience not a good thing once it does fail and everyone sat there is low health.
-
Amplification Matrix is tiny, and both creates a line that’s easily broken making it useless, and again, encourages grouping up; in turn essentially meaning you have to stack it with Invulnerability… which see above.
-
Healing grenades are slow and have a horrible parabolic flight. It’s like trying to heal with old Hanzo. Even as a massive tank I don’t trust that. At least Hanzo didn’t have to reload after 6 rounds.
-
Jump slows him down and doesn’t take him anywhere… I just don’t know why this even exists. He’s a big lad to be risking getting shot out the sky.
His AOE heal seems good though, and his weapon though it feels weird is pretty good, so there’s that.
So I dunno, his character seems nice, so actually I just feel bad for him.

I honestly think he needs a few changes or will need some. Currently, he does seem underwhelming. I’d probably increase the radius on his grenade heal by .5 or 1, and maybe lower the CD on his AOE heal by 2 - 3 seconds.
If he were to be too strong from those changes, I’d probably increase the timer on his immortality field.
His grenades often seem to hit right next to someone (especially on stairs) and not actually heal them, and CD management should remain important but having his HoT AOE heal on such a long CD makes him rather vulnerable and easy to kill IMO.
He really only seems to fit well for a bunker comp or ironically, bulky tank heavy teams.

Oh, yeah, he is blatantly a troll pick. If you have people in QP asking why you are not healing them… You know there is an issue. I am only going to pick him if our team begs for a healer. Rofl. Otherwise I am not about to risk the false reports.
I don’t even like seeing him on my team in QP.
His kit is so underwhelming because of the potential of immortality field, I personally think Blizzard has him this way because they are afraid of having something similar to Mercy 2.0 with how her rez worked (except, you know, a lot different. I always say his immortality field is more akin to a really bad Trans)
But I’m more curious to see how pros use him, or if they even use him. Right now he feels very underwhelming (at least in my rank / MMR) and is very easy to shut down.
His ultimate is bad imho, I think his healing fine (it takes some getting used to, but I can generally hit over 50% of the shots, but I also forget that his healing isn’t his attack (Like when you play Moira) so I end up shooting heals at the enemy instead of attacking but I think it’s more getting used to than anything) and his damage is mediocre. It’s not terrible, I’m just not a fan of how his gun actually works with 3 burst rounds.
His immortality field is clutch in very specific situations but can easily be shut down and has many counters with a very long cooldown (which I think is good)
But basically; I think they were worried he would be extremely OP because of his E and thus made the rest of his kit relatively weak compared to other healers.
Personally I’m going to stick to Ana as a healer, but I do want to see what they do with him.

People will have to learn to not trust immortality field, because frankly, it’s a garbage ability that gets destroyed too easily, has too small a radius, and is heavily limited by LOS.

It is only really decent for clutch saves. It does not have too much utility.

I think he is pretty great but maybe he could use some QoL buffs and changes.
A little too early to tell. People sized Ana up as weak too at first until they realized how well she meshed with certain heroes. I think overall, he will do fine on ladder; players just need to be wary about what heroes you run alongside him.
With Baptiste now. In my dream comp, he would be stellar in a bunker/BOSS comp. Symmetra as she is now is pretty good and a team actually coordinating around her teleporter, especially an Orisa/Bastion combo would be stellar. Baptiste could easily take a spot on that team with his mechanics and a 2000IQ Baptiste/Symmetra would be able to position their Orisa/Bastion in position while under the protection of immortality set safely behind a wall, set up an Ult to combo with his damage + Symmetra’s now 240 damage orbs and attack on two fronts just in time for Orisa/Bastion to teleport back (body block the teleporter, you are immortal).
Mostly the people you see playing him in qp are playing him because he is the new hero and not because they want to get good/are good at him.
You’re mostly going to see him paired with Orisa, Roadhog and Bastion, so hitting his healing grenade will be rather easy. His immortality field encourages clumping and so do his grenades. He’s not at all good to run in combination with flankers.

Man if only they actually tested new heroes in some kind of test realm, or something
it’s silly he hit live in this state

It’s not a horrible ability at all. It will be crucial to run if the enemy has good snipers. It will make it basically impossible for your team to lose the sniper duel.
If the enemy sniper has half a brain cell they won’t challenge your sniper while immortality field is on them.

Then your team has won the sniper duel and now your sniper can take pot shots uncontested.

Eh, he’s a toss up.
I find him pretty enjoyable to play he’s got a lot going on and I’ve always liked burst fire guns, but his nades would feel a lot better if they had ally hit detection instead of needing to aim at the flowerpot next to your teammates to heal them. Currently feels counter-intuitive. And he doesn’t fare too poorly you have a secondary healer semi-dedicated to keeping Baps alive.
But as a whole he feels watery to compensate for IF, which is exactly my problem with Mercy but for Rez, and I really dislike the direction of “Could be an OP mechanic so instead of making it an ult or definitely weaker but cutting a bit of current counterplay we’ll just leave every other aspect of their kit a bit lacking to even it out”.
Overall, I’m unswayed that Baps will enable DPS, Mercy and force a meta switch. He just feels like everything I dislike about Ana combined with my least favorite aspects of Lúcio.

Can’t wait for the pros to start playing him and then everyone asking for a nerf.
There is really no reason not to pick him highest elo. Ult denial and damage boot is what the pros have been looking for all the time. This is the whole point of d.va and zen being picked there.

I try to not stand in immortality field unless there’s an ult going off. Standing in it feels more like the enemy herding sheep rather than being protected.
Devs are probably scared of him coming out op due to immortality field. Would be a shame if his kit continues to suffer due to them being afraid to buff him.

Boring playstyle, boring lore and boring design… This was the most disappointing New Hero

Your team has “won” the sniper duel for 5 seconds while your sniper is confined to a 5 foot circle while the enemy sniper has changed position and is firing at your team.

I think he’s probably gonna need some buffs but I think we’re also gonna see a lot of pirate ship comps get run and feel frustrating to go against.
I think his kit overall is pretty ok but he really needs to be able to heal himself with his grenades, if he’s ever going to make it as a legitimate main healer.
Mercy and Moira both have high self sustain which is a huge reason they’re viable at all. And while Ana lacks their self healing potential, she has a lot of self defense in her nade and sleep dart.
If Baptiste gets attacked though, he doesnt have much he can really do about it. Immortality field and try to 1v1 them.?That’s really about it.
I guess you could do his weird boost jump and get to high ground in some super situational circumstances but I still dont see a ton of reason that thing even exists with how the rest of his kit works.
If he could self heal with his grenades though (even at 50 percent) I think he’d feel more or less on par with Mercy and Moira.
I have a feeling you’ve never actually played baptiste, simply because of this
