Not allowed Halloween lootbox in Arcade as a long-time player?

This guy and a few other commenters here are also having the same problem: Halloween arcade lootbox problem

The problem:
Clicking on the Arcade mode, I’m not given the chance to get the First Win Lootboxes on Junkenstein’s, Junkenstein’s Endless, and FFA as new players.

I logged into Overwatch, went to play Arcade with my boyfriend and he had the icon telling him that he could get a free lootbox for winning in the two Halloween modes and the FFA mode. I have none of those icons. I checked on my other account that I’ve had for about the same amount of time(about a year) that I also played on last year during the Halloween event and there was no lootbox opportunities!

Is Blizzard quietly telling older players that they don’t care about us by not allowing us the same right to get those event lootboxes? I find it extremely unfair that just because I played last years Halloween event, I’m not given the same incentive to play Junkenstein’s/FFA.

Also I wasn’t sure if this should be in Bug report or where else it would belong… but unless it was done on purpose by Blizzard, I would hope it’s just a bug.

Yes, this would be where you post if this was a bug.

In terms of whether it is intended or not, I believe it’s intended. The bonus First Win lootbox opportunities are there for the very first time you play the mode and earn the reward. It provides incentive for people to try all the modes when they become available, but isn’t a reoccurring thing.

The reward is only there the once, and that’s it.

Thank you for responding, I think I changed it to general discussion because at the time I made the post I didn’t realize fully that this wasn’t a bug.

Also I’m sad that they only allow that reward once, I was looking forward to the few extra chances for legendary skins, as I can’t seem to spend enough in-game time getting them as it is.

It is intended for two reasons. First is to hook you up on game. “Win this mode you get more chances to get that nice skin!” When you can quickly accumulate a lot of boxes you feel more accomplished and RNG makes you wanna keep going.

Second thing is fairness. Yes it is fair that your first time you get extra reward. It is 3rd Halloween Terror so in event you have around 200 event only items. Older players would have more of those unlocked by playing it last year. So newer players have chance to “catch up” and get what they want.

The more I think about the loot box system, the more depressed I get at the amount of gambling this game has in it.

Speaking of fairness, I understand giving newer players the chance to catch up in event rewards… but what about being fair to the player base that’s already been in the game and loyal to it since the game was released? I’ve put a lot of time in this game, but I still don’t have near all the items I would very much like to have.

played the First and Second Halloween events, got boxes this time.

You have already claimed your free lootbox for winning in that mode.

Everyone gets a free lootbox for winning in those modes however it is a one time reward.

You are not being left behind here, you have simply already claimed the reward that newer players have yet to claim.

Ah, so it’s a once in a lifetime kind of thing?

But the guy that posted above you:

I’ve also asked a few friends that played during the previous events if they had the chance for a loot box on the first win, and they said yes… I suppose they could be messing with me or not understood the question.

As far as I know, it’s once in a lifetime. My main account played the Halloween event since its inception, therefore no ‘first time’ lootboxes this year. However, my two alt accounts had the ‘first time’ loot boxes available to them since I hadn’t played the event with either account the last time it rolled around.

Keep in mind you do need to win to unlock the lootbox, so it’s possible your friends just never got a win last year. Especially when it comes to endless mode as that one was definitely more difficult and required a lot more coordination in past years than it does this year. Jumping into expert or legendary in past years was no joke and failure was pretty common.

That does make a good amount of sense. Thank you for your response!
