What I mean is that one of the biggest FPS UT99 (Quake 2 rival). They released the map assets and people built their own maps and some became very popular. Just look at the skyrim mods, never underestimate the ability and dedication that people are willing to put in.
Bliz should have released the ability to create your own maps and let the community do their thing. Then put the best ones into rotation, the rest go into an open test area like the workshop.
What I am saying is that 20 years ago, games put in the ability to make their own maps. In 2023 they can’t put in functionality with an asset map to create your own? Just make them minecraft or Roblox like.

If you are playing OW for the workshop, you are playing the wrong game.

What…I am not saying play OW for the workshop.
I am saying we could have 3 brand new maps every season that are 100 times better than what we have now because a community of 10 programmers spend 100’s of hours a month just building maps for free in their spare time.
If we were allowed to make and publish our own maps… how would they be able to charge us for them or limit our access?

Both ID and Epic (Quake and Unreal) had user friendly instruments supplied because engine licensing was part of their business. There also Valve, Crytek and other companies.
Blizzard simply doesn’t do that.
Skyrim is bad example, it is single player game, so whatever players do with it, Bethesda doesn’t have to pay to maintain it.
And unreal engine is free now, they even released 20 millions worth of free assets for the game they dropped paragon.
Bethesda still supports modding in most games.
Blizzard stop being that since warcraft3.
Since WOW they have been greedy slowly and steadily, but actiblizzard is greedy on a whole another level.
In 2023 there are plenty of studios that allow you to make game content and modding, if anything its better than ever.
Just dont expect it from greedy blizzard, they never have been consumer friendly.
Its far from free. Its actually get pretty expensive as your sales grow
IF you made something that sells that much there is nothing wrong in paying royalty for their tech.
If you are just going to do community stuff or small scale things its totally free.
Even as a developer unreal is the best for pc and console even with their licensing for indie and small studios.
[ A 5% royalty is due only if you are distributing an off-the-shelf product that incorporates Unreal Engine code (such as a game) and the lifetime gross revenue from that product exceeds $1 million USD; in this case, the first $1 million remains royalty-exempt.]
I mean if your going to get a million dollar hit using their tech i doubt giving them a share is next to nothing and 5 % is so much less.
The original doom engine was share ware and eventually the engine became open source.
Game companies used to care about making their products good, because they were owned by the developers.
Then the companies got bought by Rich jerks that saw green and decided to ruin everything in persuit of green.
Don’t you love capitalism?

Well isnt it same with every game including Overwatch? You can make map for it, you just cant make Blizzard push it into live servers lol
Like most games supports custom maps its just blizzard wont do anything that consumer friendly.

“Democratization of software development” is something certain parts of Microsoft are really pushing recently. Hopefully that philosophy bleeds into Blizzard after the acquisition.
horrible take, workshop is the only good aspect of the game
any game where it lets creators make mods for the game for free so gamers can play them is awesome in my book. of course companies hate that since they cant charge or they notice all that lost potential revenue. thats why bethesda made fallout 76 to try and monetize mods but see how that worked out… it sucked horribly. fallout 4 is still better than 76 most likely since user mods
skyrim is the game people still play today because of mods… although most of them are probably “questionable” hehe

Roblox doesn’t create any of its own content. It works with creators and gives them fair revenues for their games.
It’s more than possible to do.

They don’t want another dota to slip past them i guess.
Technology as a whole is ever changing so that the corporations behind it have more and more control over user experiences than ever before, where before the consumers could do whatever they wanted with it.
I do not like the direction the world is heading.
As an example, Smartphones were invented as a means to give corporations (and perhaps governments) an easier way to track and profile people, while being pitched as the ultimate in convenience that will keep you connected wherever you are and make your life so much more convenient.
The same with social media platforms. Interact with people without leaving your house!
Streaming media services track what you watch and how much of it you watch, create a profile of you to suggest “similar” content to keep you engaged (and paying a monthly subscription!) and the content can be altered or taken away whenever the tech overlords see fit.
They couldn’t do that with physical media like CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. You bought a disc that contained the content you wanted to watch, and you can always watch it as long as you possess the hardware to do so.
Nobody is going to come to your house and alter your Simpsons Season 3 DVD set to remove the Michael Jackson episode, for example.
This world is great in some ways, but it’s really baffling that people are so willing to accept complete loss of ownership of things if it means they get shiny new technology to play with.
o yea forgot about that. wish that would happen actually lol… imagine some mod users taking the best assets from overwatch to make a better hero shooter. blizzard would probably implode

Literally nobody cares about the workshop.
Tons of games does that better and with more freedom.
a lot of people did care about the workshop, it’s just that they’ve moved on to other games now (including me), because all the workshop devs quit blizzard and it has been 2 years without a single update

i absolutely love modding tools in other games, but other games are not overwatch. even though i kinda hate the game, you gotta admit that there really isn’t anything else like it on the market, which makes the ability to realise your own ideas and concepts in this game engine just that much cooler

so what? just because other games have it, doesn’t mean that overwatch shouldn’t. more modding tools is ALWAYS a good thing, NO EXCEPTIONS (heck, the workshop isn’t even a real modding tool, since you can’t modify any pre-existing code, and all the workshop code runs on top of the actual game)
