I stumbled across this video, and I was like wow, the voice lines are so cringe, I was wondering about why something felt off, its was in part all the voice lines now are lame and sound written by someone who writes “unity” speeches for a living. The homogenization continues… oddly Echo has six starting lines… they are attempting to show “evolution” of themes, but they are so poorly written as to be laughable…
At the very least, let’s have both have a chance, the old and new lines Dev team, come on…
Pharah: “My first time wearing this suit, I crashed… I don’t crash anymore.”
Lol the voice direction in the new game is so laughably terrible that I actually feel bad for the voice actors who had to endure it. Like I know most of them were probably recording those lines with the direction they were being given and thinking to themselves “This is so wrong for this character”.
I haven’t been paying close attention, but I definitely made fun of a number of Ashe’s lines throughout the game (not just intro). I’ve always wanted to turn these off, but they also cancel out ‘useful’ voice lines as well…
That was my thought too. They feel written by someone who still has to use report books who was told to put down a “unity” theme… no edge, all soft and lacking in personal perspective with a couple exceptions. Sad. OW’s main draw is it’s characters, Roadhog’s line change sounds absurd and simply doesn’t even make sense to someone new to the game… again, we need both the old and new voice lines. The new ones water down the characters too much and are homogenizing. Sorry, I want distinct characters, not a herd of sound-alikes who come across as unable to think for themselves.
I don’t know if it’s a bug that the voicelines are playing so frequently or what, but if that’s not a bug and just the intended way the devs want it to work, then I’m definitely gonna need them to add in a non-critical voiceline mute option. Anything not related to actual gameplay voice communication will be muted. Because it is honestly kinda ridiculous how frequently these voicelines are firing off. Ana is relatively quiet in comparison, so I’m lucky there, but heroes like Mercy and Lucio just do not shut tf up. I do not need to hear “Accelerandooooo” each time he speed boosts, I can see the green, I can feel my hero move faster, it’s just unnecessary audio clutter in an already cluttered game. Sttttoooppppp.
Idk if it’s just me, but for some reason, all voicelines have this echoing, muffling effect to them instead of sounding crisp like in OW1.
Probably has to do with their new sound system, but it doesn’t really sound good when your own character voices and the people they interact with get this echoing voice.
To be fair I don’t think overwatch’s writing has ever been something to go home about on how good it is, but even then the voice lines we had in-game prior weren’t too bad. This, however, is a real big step down lmao I’m already sick of hearing Sombra say “we’re losing- and I don’t lose.” At least some of the old lines if bad were bad in a charming way, this one is just straight-up bad
For me the intro lines need to have a nice cadence to it and a sense of the character’s personality or goal when selected. I’m keeping in mind that there may be some story element that has changed the character through some arc so I might just consider the phrasing or cadence. The ones I like so far or fit this description are:
D.va (just the game on part)
Doomfist (it’s just reworded)
Roadhog (intimdating)
Winston (hopeful)
Echo 1st line, 3rd line, 5th line
Hanzo (sad lol but kinda missing the cadence)
Reaper (leaning on voice line but I like it)
Sombra (interesting)
Torbjorn (on the fence with the 2nd half)
Tracer (kind similar)
Moira (I like it)
Well there you have it.
If I skipped any I just didn’t care for it for one reason or another. For example, like Ashe sounds fine but it felt like more of a general voice line rather than an intro line but I’m sure others might feel different about that.
I think I heard someone say they made the voice lines play often in the beta so people could hear the new ones, which makes sense. Hopefully that’s the case.
