NEW CHARACTER IDEA (Crusader Offense Needed)

So Crusaders Idea,

What if we had another crusader in the offense category so there were three. Hear me out Geiger would be a German Crusader with a knights long sword (or low power rifle im open to ideas) instead of a hammer. He would be apart of Germanys Elite Guard set to infiltrate and destroy Omnic Factories but once his special forces team was wiped out in overwatch 2 resurgence he would met back up with his mentor Reinhardt and join overwatch. So character run down as a giant knight for which I have two ideas.

Close Combat Crusader

  • 300 hp but may be reduced to 250 if to op to put on par with bastion hit pool (100 of which is armor as a primary melee he needs to make it to the fight)
  • Primary Fire (Dawns Blade) Knights longsword with 100 primary damage as he would die quickly but 0.1 second faster swing than Reinhardt
  • Secondary Fire (Crusader’s Fire) strike but to make up for range and to give use of initial confrontation have a fire pool of 5 but half damage to 50 with same cool down as current Reinhardt.
  • Final ability’s personal shield that adds 50-100 hp depending on balance to get him to the fight like orisa’s fortify but shield would instantly start to naturally decay to 0 over 10 seconds from activation.

Ranged Rifle Knight

  • 250 hp pool with 100 armour
  • Primary Fire (Knight’s Rifle) Rifle with primary fire of 20-32 damage per second but only 4 round per second. Every shot is 5-8 damage.
  • Secondary Fire (Suppressive Fire) would be fully automatic for 4 seconds with 8 rounds per second for overall of 80-128 with each bullet being 2.5-4 damage. This is the same amount of damage but with a lot more bullets to suppress the enemy and get more hits on squishes.
  • Last ability would be a shield like brigitte with only 250 hp as he would fight from the back and could join shields with her acting as a weak tank for minimal time if the tank is knocked out.

Both would have decent movement speed between Brigg and Reinhardt and the design would be like one of the old crusaders with a colored cross over the chestplate which would be easy to change for new skins. The armor with the new color would look like a smaller more mobile version of Reinhardts with less protrusions from the body and being more streamlined.

This also seems incredibly boring no offense. It’s overwatch, where’s the creativity. We can do better than just a gun, sword and a shield

CMs job they read it and pass it on so just cross fingers.
TBH I was thinking of something similar, a brawler with a big sword, is Bezerk or FF7 cloud, but as a crusader like you have described.
the direction I was leaning was more melee focused. with ranged being more utility like say throws bolas that snare a single target for you to close on.
with an ult being more Aoe, like a Wow warrior blade storm. or Clouds omni slash limit break.
his only protection would be his armor, meaning you have to be tactful with him to get close to do damage, or advance with team but even then his health pool is small enough the armor will only protect from burst and still die as quick as most DPS
finally, a leap but not as big as say Winton or doom but enough to traverse or pounce on a snared target.
so, like primary fire, sword slash, secondary fire cleaves much like JQ, but no healing just bleeds. L shift leap to target. E, bolas, like a 3 second snare 70% movement reduction.
they gameplay idea would be to advance in cover or flank. to strike in kill a target and get out before picked off.

Getting back to your ideas. the close combat crusader as you have there, looks too close to a Brig/Rein hybrid (perhaps that’s the idea) I just don’t think giving him a shield or defenses like tanks is the right way, I like the idea of more risk/ reward. so like can be killed easy if not positioned well but once it gets in there the damage to inflict will more than make up for it.

Yeah your right on the shield for sure and for the close combat build. To close distance the I was thinking of a charge like rien but is 1/4th damage and stops when he hits them. Again not much damage but just to close the distance. I forgot to put that in but I like your rocket leap better because it gives him access to some vertical which is needed in current meta. I also like your secondary better too. TO Superman DJ I like boring as I main rien and i either stand there or hit ***. I just like the crusader theme. Thank you both for the feedback though!

All good It was a nice coincidence someone else had a crusader DPS idea.
Ilike to get into the thick of it and take names. Junker Queen and Brig do that for their respected roles. but no DPS. sure you have Genji but his style didn’t suit me, in fact JQ sometimes fills that role for me,
So I’ve been trying to think up of a character that is just not another Genji.
I envisioned my concept to function, in brawl comps, Dive comps, or if skilled enough to harass on the flanks. Damage wise leaning more towards frontloading it, but the trade off
being little to no sustainability. so like using Genji as a comparative example, he can bounce around a target throwing stars until weak enough to melee kill. This guy would have to pick fights commit to it then retreat if target is not dealt with. stops him being a one man army and will need team support.
there definitely is potential here just need to be brainstormed further.

The game needs more Supports, not another Tank and definitely not another DPS.

I agree and the next 2 characters coming are supports. but let us dream for a while longer :smiley:
depending on how big the future roster of heroes becomes. I’m starting to wonder if the maps instead of just being attacker defender. depending on the map, changes to factions. with Heroes selectable specific to that faction. like Junker town with one faction being Junkers, and say Talon is the other side. but this is a topic for a different thread i think

Honestly I LOVE the idea of a melee based hero that exclusively uses a sword.

There’s one character in Paladin’s like that and I really enjoy him, the difference is he is melee like Ramattra, where there is a bit of range to his attacks.

Unfortunately, I don’t know if we’ll ever get a hero like this because in order to be at all viable, they’d have to have a kit incredibly similar to genjis. Fast movement, a deflect, possibly a passive movement ability like the wall run / double jump. But he’d also have to be bulky because he has no ranged attacks.

I picture it almost being like a Reaper / genji hybrid but literally no range at all outside of the ultimate being a large aoe (like Reaper, but burst).

Okay I actually got really inspired / excited by this topic and came up with my own version.

Electric based swordsman
200 health & 50 armor
Wields a broad sword that has been fused to both hands, sword is effectively an extension of his body.

Primary fire: Sweeping strike that deals 80 damage per strike in a cone, slightly larger range than regular melee and can swing through multiple targets. Attack speed 1.0 second.

Electrified, Chain lightning: Upon striking an enemy with your blade, a charge is consumed to electrify the opponent for 20 damage. This electricity then bounces from the initial target to another enemy within x meters, and continues unless no target is available or every enemy has been hit once. Each enemy can only be hit once by this electricity. Chain lightning cannot not pass through barriers or structures.

Secondary fire: Raises the broadsword in a defensive stance to reduce all incoming damage by 75%. Immune to headshots, direct projectile CC, and deflects projectiles away when in defensive stance. Damage by projectiles is still calculated, projectiles are deflected away randomly towards the sky and not back at the enemy. Can be held indefinitely, when dropped it goes on a 2.5 second cooldown.

Upon taking 100 damage before reductions while in defensive stance, become electrified gaining 1 charge, empowering other abilities. This total accumulates over multiple defensive stance uses, 2 charges total can be held. At max charges energy can no longer be gained.

When an enemy is struck by an electrified ability, they become grounded and immune to electricity for 2.5 seconds. Electric empowerment is not consumed if the only enem(y)ies struck are grounded.

Shift: Quickly dashes in a straight line forward spinning like a whirlwind ( think genji dash, but cannot be angled). Deals 30 damage to all enemies struck in an aoe around the user. Can be used while in the air, unaffected by gravity while spinning. 7 second cooldown, cooldown is reduced by 1 second for each enemy struck.

Electrified: all enemies struck are lightly electrocuted, reducing movement speed by 20% for 2 seconds. Cooldown is reduced by 1 second if an enemy is struck by this effect.

E: Verbally prays to the gods to receive their blessings. Instantly gains 5% movement speed, regenerates 5hp/s, and gains 5% damage reduction while this ability is activated. Lasts 6 seconds, 12 second cooldown. Cannot be empowered.

Ultimate: Begins to chant and channel all energy into a prayer for the gods, becomes immobile for 1 second and reduces damage by 80% while channeling. Upon completion, hero is summoned by the gods themselves, flying high up into the sky on a heavenly cloud and becoming immune to all damage and effects, remains visible to all players. Hero can then move freely through the sky for 4 seconds before choosing a place to land (think doomfist ult targeting, you move linearly through the sky but are visible to the enemy). Upon cast, Hero comes crashing down from the sky like a lightning bolt himself, dealing a flat 100 damage in an aoe surrounding the landing area. Enemies damaged by this attack are grounded for 1 second. Grants 2 charges of electricity upon use.

Passive: While electrified, can consume a charge by jumping and holding the jump button to launch high off the ground using a burst of lightning (think Baptiste but no wind up mechanic).

These suggestions are about making the character more unique and have a unique playstyle. I started seeing the Close Combat Knight as a dive melee prototype:

Remove the ranged attack, instead give them a grapple move (Hog hook style animation windup) to quick move into opponents with a body check - does 30 damage and knockback.

Lower damage per swing of the sword to 50, but have it piercing - bypasses shields and ignores armor reductions and armor skills like Doom/Ram block, Orisa’s hardening etc. Goes in a wide arc like Rein’s hammer, so hits multiple enemies if there.

Ult - As shields exists in a few forms I’d prefer to see a damage ult. Something like electrified blade, which chains lightning between close targets (bounces from each target on sword hit, so would be terrifying on tight groups).

Give them a higher base movement speed, but no wall climb or double jump, some armor as part of their health pool, a small body type like Tracer/Genji. Sounds like you’ve got a melee dive character that will be die a lot but still be super fun.

Alright so I kept reading and I love the electric Idea. So I’m going to type this out right. We agreed pure melee which I think he needs to be even more mobile to make up for that. With that I suggest he has access to dash and double jump. Double tap either but it would not be nearly as noticeable as genjis and wouldn’t do damage.

Close Combat Crusader MkII (Electro-Knight)

HP: 200 + 50 armour

Primary: Sweeping strike that deals 80 damage per strike in a cone, slightly larger range than regular melee and can swing through multiple targets. Attack speed 1.0 second.

Secondary: (for this I had a modified idea of the charge and would like some feed back)
This would be a two handed jab/stab motion which would cause the electrified chain lightning. This would be 80 base damage + the 20 chain lightning passing to other enemies withing x meters. Making this more interesting I would make the lightning paralyze omnic/robotic enemies for 1 second. This would mean he is better against a niche type of enemy adding another factor to the game and it makes sense as a crusader he was made to scrap omnics. TO CHARGE you must land sweeping strikes (not number of enemies in one strike but separate strikes regardless of the number of players you hit as long as you at least hit one) or use the broadsword block ability specified bellow which also generates charge. This move would require 6 charge to use.

Ability 1: The grapple hook which pulls you as the crusader to the enemy in contrast to hogs ability. This would deal 60 damage and would have a 2 second cool down as its primary role is to close the distance.

Ability 2: I would make the broad sword defense just like you said but it would be limited to a ability button with a duration of 4 seconds, 8 second recharge, and would generate 1-2 energy depending on how much damage is absorbed. Under 400 is 1 charge and 400 and up is 2 charge. This would free up the secondary attack to be the chain lightning stab as passive chain lightning would be to op and not balanced.

Ultimate: Drives the Sword into the ground with both hands dealing a staggering 140 damage with 20 damage from the chain lightning and electricity lingers in the area for a couple seconds dealing 40 more damage slowly over time. This will be most effective against the omnics/robots that get paralyzed and are stuck in the radius of the ult.

Passives: armor, double jump/dash

NOTE: while I do like the prayer to the gods, the heals and damage reduction buff makes him to OP and ruins the idea of a glass cannon and a flanking assault.

Design: So follow me on this. As a lightweight crusader his height would be 3/4ths Reinhardt but the armor would be much lighter looking more akin to a heavy Mandalorian infantry chest plate with an electrified arc core like iron man in the center (the primary color would still be silver). For the helm it would have the same visor as Rein but would be a light blue (switch all yellow colors to an electric blue) and the points at the top would be smoothed out more like an arc trooper helm. Moving to the back it would have those almost jet pack looking ridges on MasterCheif’s suit which would be made large and would have thruster vents in the bottom powering the double jump and the dash. On the left for arm he would have the grapple tucked into a extrusion looking similar to boba-fets flamethrower and the right side would be his sword. For the sword it would be a giants knights broad sword with 6 ovular cutouts down the middle of the blade that would spark with lighting every time you get a hit with the slash and would double as a charge counter for the secondary strike. (besides the ui charge counter) Besides this the legs would be similar to Rien’s but streamlined and less bulky.

Overall I hope this design makes it somewhere because this needs to happen and will be my new main. If anyone can 3d design or draw what I just typed that would be amazing. I would love to hear continual criticism to make this idea better. And lets keep posting to keep this relevant and hopefully it will be seen.

Using the Big A. Sword concept:

Passive
Using abilities automatically retrieves your Sword. Can switch to a sidearm using weapon swap. Side arm is a 10 dps hitscan with falloff of 5 damage after 10 meters.

Primary
Cleave combo. 3 hit swing of two horizontal slashes and a downward slash that has a splash hit. Slashes have a 6 meter range. The first 2 primary hits deal 60 Damage and the 3rd hit 80 damage in a 4 meter AoE. You can skip directly to the downslash if you jump and use primary. This will send you rocketing downward like Pile driver. Air downslash has some recovery while the ground version doesn’t.

Secondary
Grapple Blade. Hurl the blade at the target location up to 20 meters away dealing 60 damage in a 3 meter AoE where it lands (any surface), pierces enemies. User can choose to recall blade dealing 35 damage to any target on the way back or use the tether to pull themselves to the blade’s location dealing melee damage on the way over where they will automatically jump up for some elevation. Ability uses UI elements similar to Moira Orb UI.

Pop Slash
Slam the sword with enough force to launch yourself into the air by 10 meters. Deals 100 damage at the epicenter and falls off to 50 damage at 5 meters.

Advancing Guard
Rush forward up to 15 meters while in a defensive stance. Colliding with enemies does 35 damage to them and ends the ability. Can cancel to any other option at any time during the running animation. Can be used in the air.

Ultimate
Berserker. Your HP starts dropping to 1 HP over 8 seconds, you cannot be healed or recieve buffs. Become immune to stuns and damage. Gain the following for 8 seconds:
Pistol now places a 30 DoT of 2 seconds every hit.
No cooldowns on all abilities
All AoE attacks have increased splash range (+3 meters) and any blade hit (splash included) burns targets hit.
After Ultimate expires you can be healed again.
