Never Seen a Game Disrespect it's own characters

I really hope you guys reconsider changing Jesse McCree’s name. It’s disrespectful to his character and hard to want to play a game that treats their own characters this way…

I would understand if employees don’t want a reminder of the real person (even though to my knowledge his real life name influence was never proven guilty from anything other than one text), but the Outlaw Gunslinger has taken the name as his own and should not be related to any other figure.

Changing a character’s name 5 years after so many fans have loved and played with them is so disheartening and the biggest impact on the fanbase I think you’ll ever make. Overwatch is one of my favorite games, and McCree my favorite character…but this is something that makes me done with the game all together…

I can’t begin to express the anxiety I felt each time I’ve logged on recently in fear that his name would be removed in the hero gallery. Hearing that it will be just hurts…

Its kind of funny because all the voicelines have to be redone lol

Not all, just the ones that reference his name, I’d guess.

I dont think they will retcon the name, they probably make it storywise an alias he used and his real name is Joel or something.

If you think this is disrespect wait until you see how they balance characters

Watch, he’s going to end up bisexual or something, with a forced backstory of some secret fling with Reaper back in the blackwatch days.

Don’t underestimate blizzard’s ability to to completely fork something up for virtue signaling and sociopolitical clout at this point.

edit: probably trans, actually. Name change would be a convenient cover. Gonna be a pooshow either way.

SMITE had to rename their character once. Not long ago, actually.

The character was the Egyptian god Isis. Yeah, the SMITE characters do this thing where they say their name when you select them. So, it means no streamer or YouTuber could play her otherwise they would be demonitised and in some cases have their videos not show up to subscribers/in people’s recommended. Quite funny, actually.

Not really relevant but I felt like sharing.

I’m thinking an alleged sexual predator’s name is more disrespectful to a character that is supposed to be a hero.

Eww gross, I thought he saw reaper as sort of mentor/father figure thing.

Just say Soldier and Reaper were once a thing. That’s way more believable. Or better yet, make Mchanzo canon.

wow…the education system has really failed us…

Naw his real name was Joey Wheeler the whole time. He will get his Kunai with chain ultimate in OW1.5

We don’t know what the real guy may or may not have done.

Whatever the case is though, the mental wellbeing of the OW & Blizzard staff should ALWAYS take precedent over that of a fictional character.

Some people around the world will have become very attached to this hero and it’s understandable that people will feel upset. But we shouldn’t have a monopoly of power over delicate internal issues like this, ones which we have no idea about or have not had to deal with ourselves.

“Oops, you caught us f***ing up, better change a characters name to distract everyone while we shred a bunch of incriminating documents.”

Honestly what a dumpster fire.

This makes me wonder, if terrorist organizations keep making names based around mythological gods and goddesses, would that effectively kill mythology? Since apparently fighting or creating a legacy separate from a name of similar origin is slowing dissolving… That actually might make a great basis for a video game…?

Its no wonder the devs honestly think the name change is the best place to start righting the ship. We as a society, specifically in gaming, tend to be REALLY stupid.

It was unwise to name heroes after rl ppl and stuff to begin with tbh.

I once knew 3 people named kate elizabeth cunningham. They were all completely different people. People share names all the time. People are supposed to have the intelligence to differentiate between people’s character.

Not if you share in public from where the chosen name is originating.

lol who cares, the real reason is so they can endlessly virtue signal the game dry. The guy will come back with a brand new name, and gender too, and OLDER THAN EVER BEFORE. Laugh how they say they want to keep the game separate from the real world when they have done anything but that. None of the merchandise has value as the franchise is heavily politically motivated.
