Never have I seen a game where its user base were so fascinated by a character's sexuality rather than story

It is just fascinating to see.
In any other medium the fanbase would have expected long series of clues, references and developed narrative to learn about the character.

Overwatch on the other hand? Short conversation about an ex-boyfriend and everyone heralds it as the greatest thing to ever happen for LGBT community in gaming.
One would assume if anyone cares about the story would be here but instead some people are just so thankful to know a fictional character with zero development is gay via a tweet.
Solitaire has more story than Overwatch Lmao.

That doesn’t seem to be what is happening. It just seems that people are pleased with it. I hope you’ll come to terms with the revelation.

If stuff like this was more normalized, it would be less newsworthy.

I am more disappointed about not knowing how and why Reaper and Soldier 76 fight under OW HQ before it blowing up.

Or what Doomfist’s plan is or what he is doing.

Or what is going on with the new Mcree stuff.

We are just so ignorant on this stuff. Why did this even need to be a revelation? Why not leave it in their bio? I am getting tired of being told nothing almost 3 years into this game.
Its Destiny level bad when it comes to story telling.

???

Maybe I’m just old, but I remember a LOT of noise when they allowed same-sex couples in The Sims about 19 years ago. And then the huge thing with Mass Effect and allowing you to romance across genders.

I thought it was handled in about the most low key manner possible. After all, it was a story about Ana nursing Jack back to health and talking about each of their pasts. We saw allusions to the fact that Ana is no longer married as well. Where is the outrage there?

I was going to say the thing about Mass Effect, but you edited your post like you read my mind.

I still wonder if that’s because they split up or because Ana is still legally dead.

Again.
Why should I care?

Why should I care who is having sex with whom or someone’s marital status? Why is this important for me to know that they would dedicate one of the few story revelations they do per year?

Was this revelation more important than what is Doomfist doing? Or Sombra’s plans? I could go on and on.

Why should we make you care? Clearly other people care, so let them.

I don’t know. Why would you care? And I ask because you seem to care. A lot.

I mean, you don’t NEED to care, just like nobody NEEDED to care about any of the other “lore tidbits” that have been dumped on us through comics, voice lines and media; but it’s weird that the only time people COMPLAIN about unnecessary lore is when it has to do with “the gays.”

Also, it’s not like this reveal was the focus of the short story it was a part of; they “dedicated” two or three lines of dialogue and a fraction of a single piece of art to it, and that was it.

Yeah I am kind of pissed off 3 years in we still don’t know why or how Overwatch broke up.
Rather it was imperative we know Soldier is gay and Ana had a divorce. Riveting.
Is the next reveal about how Winston cheated on Athena with her twin sister?

Did you not read the story? The whole Soldier being gay and Ana being not married is like 12 throwaway words in a 3,000 words short story.

If you think that’s too much, then anything is too much.

You deserve a trophy

yeah 18 pages of the story going nowhere and the only new thing we learn is he is gay and she divorced.

Awesome.
