Net Neutrality and how it will affect the community

i have a concern about how is the net neutrality will affect the players. what would happen once net neutrality is killed tomorrow?

Who knows. But worrying about it now won’t change the future only your present.

Does net neutrality apply to the UK?

Don’t think so. It’s a US thing. But If I do remember correctly Net Neutrality has only been a thing since 2015 (someone correct me if I’m wrong).

Thank god I’m not from America. Everything seems so stressful for you guys rn.

I’m not American, but I doubt it’s that big of an issue, to be honest. People always like to imagine the worst scenarios for everything.

But the truth is; we often suffer more in imagination than reality.

Corporations exploit every single aspect of every single thing they can. They are the biggest leeches in the universe. They will take advantage of this. Anyone who understands how business works knows it is a huge deal.

It means very little, at first. But gradually, ISPs will ask Blizzard to go pay extra money for their players to get unthrottled access to their matchmaking services.

Or, even worse: these ISPs will throttle YOUR connection to game servers, and then go make a new “gamer deluxe” package addition to the costs you are already paying for internet that will increase your connection speed to game servers. (which is equal to current, NN speeds, which will get throttled after tomorrow)

On the other end, if it’s just businesses that get targetted:
This will cost Blizzard money.
Blizzard might then opt for an “Overwatch premium” subscription that will fund their extra costs of this unthrottled access from ISPs, but then they will throttle anyone who does not pay overwatch premium from matchmaking services, increasing waiting times and such, or reduce xp gain/lootbox loot chances for non-subscribers.
They might release heroes and maps that will require money to be unlocked.

These are all the worst-case scenarios. They will not happen overnight. They will become reality slowly over time. And before you know it you are paying an extra 100 bucks a month to get unrestricted and unthrottled access to your games and other internet communities you may be a part of. Stuff you are now taking for granted as part of the price you are paying already.

For real, if you are living in the states and your governor or senate representative or whatever, is against net neutrality, make your voice heard by vote whenever it applies. Also call them, e-mail them, etc.
This transcends your republican vs democrat squabbles. This affects everyone no matter their political affiliation, and everyone gets screwed over, ESPECIALLY consumers.

Sort of. There have been rules created all throughout the internet’s existence that could be classified under “net neutrality” (the term actually comes from back in 2003), but the repeal that’s happening is only of a portion of a rule implemented in 2015. So no, it wasn’t around very long, and seeing as not even the entire rule is being repealed and the internet functioned fine beforehand, I think we’ll be okay. People are overreacting

But even if this would happen, it’s outside of your control, so don’t worry about it.

theres a senate bill on it but they need paul ryan to start a vote on it and then it goes to trump and he can veto it or let it go through but immediately it wont happen right away but down the line everything will start getting slower

In America it is a big issue. Some VERY LARGE Internet providers and content providers (Comcast in this example) started to not only double dipping but blocking out competing companies. Some examples:

  1. Comcast is not only one of the largest Internet providers in the USA but they also own one of the largest content creators. In this case they own the NBC network. They started offering their TV content to their Internet providers as an extra streaming package. They then placed monthly data caps on some of their Internet customers BUT streaming NBC content would NOT count toward that monthly data cap. So this in return put a huge pie in the face of other streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and so on. Comcast Internet customers would cancel other streaming providers because they were not able to stream without going over their monthly data caps and paying extra to Comcast.

  2. Comcast would throttle or limit their connections to streaming services like Netflix. This in return caused a lot of Comcast Internet customers to call and complain to Nerflix. Comcast then say to Netflix, “Pay is some money and we will give more bandwith to your connections.” Netflix then caved and paid Comcast. This is double dipping. Comcast gets paid by the customer AND by Netflix.

Keep in mind that Comcast is also a cable TV provider. They HATE Netflix with a passion. People have been canceling cable TV service and picking up streaming services because cable TV is just getting to expensive. High end packages can run $250+ a month. I was paying $120 a month for minimum HD services which has maybe 1/4th the channels you get with the high end package. I canceled it and signed up to YouTube TV and haven’t looked back. Oh and NBC is the only local channel not available on YouTube TV, geee I wonder why Comcast.

AT&T is the next largest Internet provider which also owns several media creating companies. Verizon is on board with them as well but only because they are just greedy people.

netflix also has a bunch of debt rn

Do people realize we got Net Neutrality back in 2015 because companies were trying to exploit customers in the first place? And that the guy leading this whole thing, Ajit “Most Punchable Face in the World” Pai used to work for Verizon?

Again, this is yet to happen. Don’t worry about it now, it won’t do anything for you.

It already has happened. Notice the date on all these articles. They are all 2014 or 2015, when the original NN was put into effect.

So you fear what has happened in the past, shall happen again?

…That’s literally the entire reason why these companies want Net Neutrality gone. Obama isn’t here anymore, Trump hired Pai, Pai is working with these companies because he used to be a part of one.

Everyone’s already ok with shelling out $10/mo to play online on any console that isn’t branded Nintendo. I remember when PS3 was a thing…

If you knew or had to deal with these 3 companies at all then you would know they will do this. I’m not joking when I say that these companies are like an evil movie villain and will stop at nothing to drive competitors out of business. AT&T drove the last company I worked for out of business using the court system. They would just drag things out till the company I worked for just ran out of money.
