Okay, so if (and this is a big “if”) the devs won’t simply revert his shuriken buff then it’s time to nerf him elsewhere to compensate:
- Deflect no longer cancellable (still 2 second duration)
- Genji cannot move, jump nor crouch while using deflect (can turn but no air control)
- Genji cannot dash to cancel deflect.
- Deflect’s hitbox reduced to the same size as Brig’s barrier
- Deflect’s visual and auditory signature increased
- Deflect’s cooldown increased to 12 seconds
Deflect is an incredibly powerful ability, it’s what balanced Genji when his shurikens were rather weak as you could not only negate damage that would be done to you but turn it right back against your opponent. Reflecting damage is absurdly powerful in any game and is usually much more limited and skill dependent like TF2 Pyro’s reflect which would only work on projectiles and you needed much better timing.

Just revert the buffs, this is unnecessary.

Genji might as well not have deflect at all against beam-attack heroes and he still wipes the floor.

Why would you ever use deflect then? Using it will just make you a sitting duck, you’d be better not using it at all, even the value that it usually brings will be gone, it would just be an unusable ability, and will probably make genji bad overall.
You literally instead of fixing the problem just said F it lets just make deflect useless.

Immunity is a very powerful ability.
Reflecting is even more powerful.
This needs serious downsides and the downsides used to be a general lack of damaging power, now if Genji wants to be able to deal 230 damage in 0.65sec simultaneous with extremely fast repositioning then deflect needs a nerf. You can’t do a “half deflect” genji is either deflecting or he isn’t, sacrificing mobility is one of the few viable downsides.
Mei gives up mobility to get total immunity from all directions, Mercy is essentially stationary when using Rez, Bastion gives up mobility for a gatling gun, Torb can summon an extra auto-aiming hitscanning ‘ally’ but it’s immobile, Baptiste can block all damage but the downside is the source of the immortality is a stationary object.
What is the dealbreaker for you? That it cannot be cancelled? Is that what makes it so unusable?
Well would you still feel the same way if it could be cancelled? But not with dash, only by clicking the ability key again and going through the brief “put away Wakizashi” animation.

It’s not immunity. There’s so many heroes in this game with a way to bypass it. Making him stand still so you can bypass it easier isn’t the answer. For a flanker, standing completely still to deflect some damage is pretty useless. I’d almost never use it. It’d be like giving recall or adaptive shields a 1 second cast time where you can’t move. It’s basically a death sentence.

Man salt to the max I admit genji probably needs some medium nerfs but this would just say don’t even use deflect because of how stupid this is. People will stop shooting at you after the first second.

They already do if they even shoot at all. The duration buff changes pretty much nothing except for how long I get to stare Widowmaker down.

Also genji’s deflect visual effects are super obvious as long as you aren’t drunk/wasted.

It just looks cooler when you’re drunk.
Wait I have a nerfing deflect idea. so here are the changes :
1 : removing the ability
reasoning : I believe playing genji without any mobility during deflect is stupid. Removing deflect would make it harder for genjis to throw the game.
2 : The post is really, really dumb (no hate to the creator)
I’d be fine with all these changes except for a buff in hitbox instead of a nerf if we rework Genji into a tank
blizz do ur thing

They do that anyway.
The difference is with this forced break in exchange of fire Genji can resposition with impunity, no direct fire can deter genji’s movement. You can’t even use this time to safely reload as genji can cancel the deflect at any moment either with Dash or just manually cancelling the ability.
This was okay when his shurikens were weak, deflect was key part to getting enough damage out, now deflect just allows ideal positioning with safety.
Genji is NOT hard countered by “beam attack” enemies that bypass his deflect, at least not since his shuriken buffs. Winston isn’t even a particular problem for Genji any more, let alone Moira or Mei (who has taken far worse nerfs than what i’ve proposed).
Nope.
You’re a genji main, it looks obvious to you because it’s happening right in front of your screen, to everyone else it’s a very subtle difference that is literally invisible if genji is moving due to the motion blur effect that’s present in all LCD monitors except for a few $2000 anti-blur monitors or CRT monitors.
Everything that’s moving fast is blurred. It’s not blurred when you watch Genji standing still or play it back in slow motion, the blurring happens due to the scan and hold pixel response.
You can’t compare it to other effects like cryo-freeze, Zarya Bubble, Wraith form, those are HUGE changes. What you’re looking for on Genji are a few wisps that are easily hidden behind your classing hitmarker (why can’t we turn off hitmarkers? Especially as they’re so huge, varying in size and colour) and the bullet impact flashes.

It’s a ton of red particles in front of the genji.
I play Ana I know how obvious genji’s deflect is.

But i’m not saying there’s a delay before an ability begins that grants immunity. And so what if Tracer did linger for 1 second when she used recall as long as she gained the same benefit of you being unable to damage her. That pretty much IS the case right now as recall lasts for 1 second where Tracer has 100% invulnerability, it’s just she’s also invisible and insubstantial. Ditto for Sombra using translocator.
I’ve seen a lot of genjis DELIBERATELY stand still when they deflect in the hopes that they will draw more fire as they more damage they take the more damage they deal. That’s a clever tactic.
What isn’t very satisfying is when a genji is charging into the ideal range to swift strike and combo you but he’s deflecting, there’s basically NOTHING you can do as he moves around cover to get the ideal position.
You know what ALSO makes a ton of red particles in front of Genji? SHOOTING HIM! When projectiles and hitscan hit him, a red particle erupts on each hit.
You don’t know this because you’re a genji main.
You don’t play against genji, you play AS Genji.
Not much of Ana.
She fires, like, one shot every 0.8 sec. Not a shotgun with mutliple pellets or a sub machine gun
fun fact, you react quicker to auditory cues than visual cues. If you are having trouble reading deflect (which is not as hard to see as you make it out to be), the auditory cue it gives off is pretty loud
Should I tell him
okay, i’ll bite. we still play against genji as often as he’s picked, because you can have a genji on both teams.
even if that was the case and we never played against a genji, how does more red particles after shooting deflect make it any less obvious that he’s deflecting?
Only got like 30 hours on her so that means I don’t play her.
