I tried to send a ticket to support, but since it took a week to get a response last time (and it only made me more confused and frustrated), I figured I’d post here as well.
Here’s my original ticket:
I have a someone complicated problem regarding account merging for Overwatch 2.
Last winter, I separated from my spouse and purchased a new XBox. For a time I was playing on this existing Battletag (I’ve been playing OW since launch), logged into his Xbox Live account. Later, I subscribed to my own Live account and created a new Battletag so I would have the freedom to play whenever I wanted (since the same Live account can’t be used on 2 consoles simultaneously).
At that time, I was told there was no way to disconnect an account from a console.
I’ve just learned about account merging, and was hoping this would be an opportunity to reclaim my old account, with 5 years of progress and cosmetics on it.
So, am I able to disconnect my new account, and connect my old account, to my new Xbox and to merge it for the release of OW2?
*And, would consolidation of the two existing accounts be possible? *
I would appreciate really detailed instructions on how to reclaim my primary Battletag on my new console.
Thank you
Here’s the response:
My name is Saryndie and I will be looking into your case today. I appreciate your patience with us, we are finally getting them back under control after recent events and releases!
I had a read of your issue, and I can see that there is a lot of information needed to create the full picture here, so please excuse the wall of text incoming.
There are 2 types of account merging. Merging 2 battle.net accounts into 1 - this will not do what you think it does, because you can only have 1 Overwatch license per account. You would have to pick one of the battle.net accounts, and the Overwatch account linked to that account is what you keep, while the other one would be permanently deleted.
*The other one is that with Overwatch 2 cross-progression will be introduced. To be able to play, you will need to “merge” your console account with your battle.net account. *
If you already linked a console account, that is the one that the data will be taken from when cross-progression is enabled. While you can unlink a console account, this will trigger a very long cooldown - a year - before you can link a different console account. You can re-link the original at any time, but you won’t be able to link another account right away. This is to stop people from abusing the system.

Can anyone help me parse this? From what I’m understanding, I can’t use my original account to play OW2 when it launches, because there is a year long cool down (that as far as I know, was not announced) that would prevent me from linking my original account, to my new console.
