Need help understanding account merging

I tried to send a ticket to support, but since it took a week to get a response last time (and it only made me more confused and frustrated), I figured I’d post here as well.

Here’s my original ticket:

I have a someone complicated problem regarding account merging for Overwatch 2.

Last winter, I separated from my spouse and purchased a new XBox. For a time I was playing on this existing Battletag (I’ve been playing OW since launch), logged into his Xbox Live account. Later, I subscribed to my own Live account and created a new Battletag so I would have the freedom to play whenever I wanted (since the same Live account can’t be used on 2 consoles simultaneously).

At that time, I was told there was no way to disconnect an account from a console.

I’ve just learned about account merging, and was hoping this would be an opportunity to reclaim my old account, with 5 years of progress and cosmetics on it.

So, am I able to disconnect my new account, and connect my old account, to my new Xbox and to merge it for the release of OW2?

*And, would consolidation of the two existing accounts be possible? *

I would appreciate really detailed instructions on how to reclaim my primary Battletag on my new console.

Thank you

Here’s the response:

My name is Saryndie and I will be looking into your case today. I appreciate your patience with us, we are finally getting them back under control after recent events and releases!

I had a read of your issue, and I can see that there is a lot of information needed to create the full picture here, so please excuse the wall of text incoming.

There are 2 types of account merging. Merging 2 battle.net accounts into 1 - this will not do what you think it does, because you can only have 1 Overwatch license per account. You would have to pick one of the battle.net accounts, and the Overwatch account linked to that account is what you keep, while the other one would be permanently deleted.

*The other one is that with Overwatch 2 cross-progression will be introduced. To be able to play, you will need to “merge” your console account with your battle.net account. *

If you already linked a console account, that is the one that the data will be taken from when cross-progression is enabled. While you can unlink a console account, this will trigger a very long cooldown - a year - before you can link a different console account. You can re-link the original at any time, but you won’t be able to link another account right away. This is to stop people from abusing the system.

I hope this clears things up! Thank you for your patience and understanding in the matter.

Can anyone help me parse this? From what I’m understanding, I can’t use my original account to play OW2 when it launches, because there is a year long cool down (that as far as I know, was not announced) that would prevent me from linking my original account, to my new console.

I think your answer is on the FAQ:

They’ve been promoting the FAQ in #general-discussion and on Twitter.

I need help understanding this as well my account on Xbox was linked to another battle net account and I had the wrong account since switching to pc attached to my pc account.
Now I have a year long cool down and can’t merge my main Xbox account to my pc account. I have contacted support and got nothing helpful.
I really just want my cosmetics and gold guns on one account and I can’t do that now. I have tried everything can someone help me.

Also I have ran through the faq a couple of times and found nothing to help me with this particular incident. I don’t know if I’m SOL or if I can get my correct account to merger successfully. I really need some help.

from the FAQ:

Starting August 16, every player with a linked console account will be prompted at login to identify, select, and confirm the accounts you want to merge. Once you approve, we will prepare your accounts to be merged during the release of Overwatch 2.

There will be one opportunity to merge console accounts, so make sure you double-check which accounts you are merging before you confirm!

Can I change which accounts are linked together after merging is complete?

You can unlink your console accounts from your Battle.net account at any time. However, there is a 1-year cooldown for linking new accounts to your Battle.net account.

When you link a new console account to your battle.net account, it can access the progression and in-game items from the battle.net account. However, the new console account will not transfer its progress and in-game items to the linked battle.net account.

These statements seem to directly address what you’re asking. If you already picked that account on August 16th, it’s locked to it for one year.
Edit: fixed format

I need help i Confirmed the wrong battle.net accout for merge and i dont know the log in for the account i merged it to

The merged account can’t be changed for one year, per the FAQ. That’s why they ask you to verify it multiple times.

Ok is there anyway i can recover the battle.net account that i merged my main xbox live account to. if can only remember the name wich i think is Maybe ItzKay-1359 or somthing similar with the same icon

and if there is a way for someone to find that account and the Login info could it be messged to me on a priv chat app like my phone nuber or snapchat so i can write it down and ill be good and id appreciate it alot

You’d have to open a ticket with the staff for that information.

What dose that mean?

Okay so… a few days ago I created a new battle pass account to link to my ow ps4 account- today I found my old ow pc account and decided to link it to my ps4 account in order to eliminate the extra account and redeem all my items on 1 account. It allowed me to switch the link to the old account, but now I am reading there is a 1 year cooldown? I was able to confirm the connection on my PS4 as well, am I going to lose all my items because I relinked? Please let me know, if necessary I will relink the old account.

i went on overwatch 1 a copal weeks ago and it asked me to account merge because i have overwatch on my pc. so will my xbox/main account still be on my xbox?
