My friend and I, excited about the queue changes, loaded up the game fo the first time in a long time. We played about 5 games in season 8; maybe 10 in season 2?
We played exactly 3 games today. Each queue was 25+ minutes.

I think you refer to wide groups, aka groups with a high skill difference. Yes, they even said this can be the case, because they have to find a match for your team on the other side and you will not play with solo or narrow groups. This makes wide queuing a terrible idea.
I think it’s stupid you can still be put in these matches alongside these wide group players as solo q.
You can’t. Blizzard said solo players will never be in wide games.
