“How does Kiriko connect to the over-arching storyline of Overwatch?”
Honest question. Since we haven’t gotten her origin story – 'though, given their current track record, that might not tell us much – and her cinematic being more of a character introduction, what does she provide to the supposed lore of Overwatch?
I mean, sure, there’s some interesting avenues they could take with her:
Hanzo being her mentor.
If there’s a Kitsune spirit and Dragon spirits, are there other spirits based on yokai?
Does the gang she fight against have potential relations to Talon?
So many potential avenues, but I feel like nothing’s been hinted at?
Complete shot in the dark here but given how much excavation is being done on various maps I bet her clan or the shimada clan have some kind of artefact. Maybe it’s why they have ninja magic
Overwatch has a lot of heroes that just kind of exist and don’t really have anything to do with the overwatch faction or talon. All we know so far about her is that she at least knows shimadas.
Which is strange, 'cause almost everyone CAN be connected to the over-arching narrative:
Hanzo and Kiriko could be used to root out the collaboration between Talon and the Hashimoto Gang.
The Queen could side with Talon as a means to take over Australia (vengeance for the government giving their land to the omnics because they were weak).
Junkrat & Roadhog joining Overwatch after hearing that The Queen has joined Talon, just to spite her.
Wrecking Ball being an inside-hamster for whatever plan The Junkers now have with Talon.
Ashe partnering with Talon as business partners in arms-dealing.
Just off the top of my head. Not to mention, all the personal character stories that need to be concluded (what even is Junkrat’s treasure?).
Yes, they can, and I expect that’s exactly what we will see once the PvE comes out. I can pretty much guarantee they will put most of the lore about the in-game universe in there because let’s be honest, most people who would spend money on OW PvE probably do it because they liked the PvE events in OW1 which were filled with lore.
I think I remember watching a video and it could of been fanfiction ofc. But I believe they said in the video her mother trained Genji and Hanzo something along those lines Or maybe it was her grandmother.
How would retconning magic into OW be massive? All the questions seems simple to answer.
Q: If its possible to use magic, why are people using Technology instead of Magic?
A1: Maybe magic is a lost art. Only those really in tune with their history and magicality can use it. Like Genji, Hanzo, and the fox girl would likely be.
A2: Maybe science has outpaced magic? Its easier to use, understand, and the end result is the same. Why learn gravity magic when Sigma just has gravity powers? Why use magic to enhance your strength when you could just get auged?
I wish – this is what I’ve been pitching for ages but so far, it feels like she is her own established hero
I guess Hanzo could run into her and realize their connections though and maybe get her to leave home and travel with him (could be how he finds his way to fighting alongside Genji again)
That aside, I feel like they are going with the “new generation” route. Like Cassidy’s new team in the comic, they put together a gang of current Overwatch heroes and the other ones Cassidy scooped up. Kiriko would be the freshest face in that group and probably the character we the audience could connect to the most (especially since her cinematic seems so normal/down to earth – she’s basically Ash Ketchum in this world, amirite?)
Considering that the little lore we have on hanzo is him running away from the Shimadas and then traveling the world i honestly doubt he even knows Kiriki, i would bet more on Genji knowing her since he did party a lot and such but i still think its kinda of unlikely.
If any they may have closer relation to the Shimadas either as a sub gang of sorts or as a rivaling gang.
Honestly, lore wise she doesnt seem much different from all the other heroes disconected to the lore.
Hanzos failed leadership as the head of the Shimada clan has led places like Kanezaka to be overtaken by rival gangs. Hanzo is also still clearly haunted by what he did to Genji, but perhaps now that he can be reassured that Genji is alive, he’s able to get out of his self loathing isolation and stand up for his home again. Then comes Kiriko, his possible cousin (Aaron Keller has said she is Hanzo and Genji’s cousin at least), who has been performing vigilante Justice but lacks proper guidance. Hanzo may not have redeemed himself when he killed Genji and then led the Shimada clan down and all the people that they protected, but he can redeem himself through this young girl who kind of reminds him of his brother, Genji, when he was young and carefree.
And that’s the problem: we know next to nothing about Hanzo.
What are his goals? What is his character motive? Where is he currently? None of these can be answered concretely.
I mean, sure, this would work for a more secretive character (like Sombra), but this does show that need to start connecting the dots of existing characters, and better flesh out their ambitions.
…They’re doing PvE because they want to develop the story of Overwatch, right? As in, serious plotlines and character development…Do you think when the lore guy quit no one else had read about the characters? That’s genuinely hilarious.
Trust us, they’re just two whacky fun loving guys! Not a pyromaniac and a murderer!
I mean, ok…Mei exists and apparently will enter combat, so I guess we had already left any semblance of character behind. Maybe I expected too much.
