Not sure if I am the only one, but I am getting quite sick of the mystery heroes selection. Usually all I get is Sombra, Tracer or something else I never really play. I tend to get a lot of support heroes over and over again… Seems like the mystery and randomness is not so random at all. Does anyone know if any blue posts adressed this? I haven’t been able to find anything particular.
It’s random. Jeff said it multiple multiple times. There is no conspiracy theory behind mystery heroes
look back at you’re life. have you ever had bad luck before? because i think thats what you have. bad luck
I mean, if it was a conspiracy, do you think they’d just admit it?

I used to think the game would prefer to give me characters I had no time on. Every time I’d play I’d “constantly” be getting widow, doomfist, ana, sombra… etc etc never my favorites or the ones I was good with.
Then one day I decided to pay attention and… well…
I DO get my favorites… and when I do I tend to stay on them and not die because, surprise, i’m good at them and know how to use them, especially against a bunch of other players who probably are getting characters they don’t know how to use.
However once I started getting characters I didn’t know how to use I’d cycle through them quickly… so if I happened to get a streak of them (as RNG will sometimes do) I would notice extra much and remember because I would ALSO die a lot and we tend to focus and remember negatives more easily than positives.
So spend a few sessions actually paying attention to what you get… and your actual play time and I think you’ll find out where the problem is.
I quite often always got Winston, the only Hero I dislike Playing. I’ve have not played anything with “Mystery” in it’s name, since they made it impossible to swap characters on Suicide. Which was sad, because I got shoehorned into playing support because no one did, when this game launched, and Mystery Heroes was the only chance to try new heroes.
Mystery heroes is the best game mode.
I doubt that its making you play heroes you usually dont play, however the gamemode is 100% bugged for months now, i think ever since echo got released.
For some reason these things happen quite often, more than it should.
-You respawn as the hero you had before, without suiciding, sometimes 3 times is a row.
-You respawn as the hero, that killed you.
-And its actually hard to find a moment in the game where you dont have hero duplications. 2 sometimes 3 of the same hero at the same time is happening way too often.
All of these are happening since Echo. The bug report section has a post about it ever since then but no one cares to fix it.
I tend to get heros I don’t play often as well, so I think it is random for different players based on who they don’t often play.
There are a couple of things at work, and most of it is statistics.
First, even players who have large pools of (effective and liked) heroes to choose from rarely have that pool larger than half the roster - that’d mean 16+ heroes to play effectively. That alone means you’re more likely to get a hero you have little experience on and/or don’t care to play much.
Second, as Krotoan said, when you get a hero you’re good at, you tend to stay on them for a while, giving less chances for new heroes to come up. But when you get a hero you don’t like or otherwise aren’t as good with, you cycle through them quickly. This can easily make it feel like you get them more often, even if you actually end up spending more time on your good heroes.
Third, Tanks and Supports have half the heroes each compared to Damage. Thus, every time you get someone in those roles, it’s likelier to be be a hero you’ve seen recently in that role. Again, this easily gives an impression of getting them more often - possibly because you pay attention to the role first, and only then note “oh, it’s Ana again”.
Also, the same RNG applies to everyone. You, your teammates and your opponents. If you wanted to check the veracity of the RNG, you’d need to watch every switch, of every player, for several matches at least. It’s easy to get short-term bias for individuals, in one match, especially with the aforementioned things. It’s harder to get in a larger scale.
And finally, you’re more likely to notice and remember the annoying stuff than the good things happening. “Oh, Doomfist again” vs. “yay, something I can actually play, let’s go!” Combine this natural bias with the earlier points about probability and perceptions, and you’ll easily get the feeling that there’s bias against you on the RNG regardless of the reality.
190 hours of my total playtime have been spent on MH, can guarantee that it’s all random
There is. How is getting hero A B A B A B B A random when there are 32 of them? Its like a lottery chance and still happens like every 2nd day. (I play lots of mystery heroes).
Once I even had a character 3 times in a row without suicide and no echo-ulting on me.
2 Weeks ago or so I was again a hero 4 times on one of the busan maps… It just seems odd to me. It wasn’t like that in the past. It just happens since last year.
UNLESS
There was a case with Apple’s iTunes shuffle where people would complain that it’s not random because they would often get a few songs from the same artist in a row or a similar genre. In reality it was completely random. So what Apple did was they revamped the shuffle feature to be less random, but feel more random by preventing the same artist/song/etc to be played in succession.
Repetition in randomness is expected when there’s only 32 options.
Well I’m sorry dude but it has been confirmed, it’s all random. That’s why it’s terrible to play. Sometimes the enemy has 2 pharah and 2 mercy while you don’t even have a healer and sometimes you get 3 healers and good tanks, it’s luck, sometimes you are lucky sometimes you aren’t lucky.
I doubt they would waste the time and resources to create a conspiracy behind mystery heroes to begin with. It’s a fun game mode that a lot of people do not care about and it’s not supposed to be balanced. It’s luck based, wanting something luck based to be balanced is nuts. It just ain’t gonna happen
The problem isn’t that mystery heroes gives you a random person, its that there’s so many “non-meta” and non-viable comps and characters that most games of MH are absolute trash.
It might have made more sense and been more fun when the game first came out, when there were lots of viable comps. But as player skill improved, those comps became worthless and the only people who still think its fun are ones that don’t actually treat it like a real mode.
However with a truly random cycle you expect to see certain stretches of time where it seems nonrandom
Steve Jobs famously had to alter the “random” setting on the ipods because people would get songs from the same album in a row sometimes and claim it “wasn’t random” when you’d actually expect that to happen sometimes in a truly random situation
He said something along the lines of “We made it less random to make it seem more random”
Ah I see @Baguette beat me to it
So yes you do expect this to happens sometimes in a truly random situation.
If you flip a coin 1000 times you will have certain stretches of flips that are repeated heads or repeated tails. It’s just the nature of the mathematics of the situation.
Confirmation bias then gets us to remember the times where it seemed nonrandom when in reality it was random the whole time. Our perception and memory of it is likely the problem, not the game
Of course sometimes you will get, idk, brig over and over again, but what do you think “Oof though luck” or “OMG THIS GAME IS SO STUPID ITS NOT RANDOM AT ALL I KEEP GETTING TRASH HEROES WHILE THEY KEEP GETTING GOOD HEROS” like no. Stop. It’s obvious that if you play tons of mystery heroes you will experience repetition, but that doesn’t make in not random. You have like 30 heroes or something and the system will chose one for you, it’s obvious that you can get a hero multiple times
I like how no one is mentioning the bug with echo and people getting the same hero after they die.
