My opinion on role queue as a support main

I hesitate to say I main anything because I flex so much, but if I had to pick, I main support, second tank, and will flex dps depending on the situation. Here’s my take:

Dps are upset that their queue times are so long. I’m stoked I’m getting into matches right away. HOWEVER, I find the quality of the matches 10x more frustrating.

The main problem, that role queue or any forced lock will never fix, is poor teamwork, and lack of team coordination. I don’t just mean, being out of position and getting picked before the fight starts. I mean that guy who role queues dps, and then play ONLY widow into double shields. Or that hog who only hooks tanks and never looks at the tracer in the back line. Or that Ana who only tries to out duel McCree and never heals. Role queue doesn’t fix the people who treat the game like team deathmatch.

In my opinion, role queue makes these people even more detrimental to games. For example, when a tank isn’t being effective at protecting the back line, I feel comfortable solo healing as Mercy if our other healer can flex to someone like Mei who can self sustain, tank, and counter flankers. Or if they’re running double shields and we don’t have DPS comfortable playing flankers, I will switch to Sombra so we can get through choke and build some momentum.

Role queue takes away all these options for flex players and makes the one tricking even stronger. Now, if you have one player forcing a back character into hard counters, and your other player of that role doesn’t feel comfortable playing the character you need, your team is SOL and most likely just going to get rolled. Which is how all my games are going, getting rolled or rolling.

I want to believe that with time matchmaking and SR allocation will properly reflect that a platinum Symmetra isn’t necessarily a platinum DPS if he can’t play hitscan or vice versa. But really I think more than we need a locked role queue, from this experience, we need a ‘match with other team players’ queue.

I haven’t had a single stomp yet either way, sorry to hear that’s your experience. As for flexing, if I’m having issues with flankers as an off-healer, I switch to Lucio. If I’m having issues as a main healer with flankers, then Bap, Mercy, Moira, or Ana (great at dealing with a wild Reaper if you can hit your sleeps). You can still flex within your role to help deal with a hurdle.

Role que introduce a TON of new problems.

We warned people and they just did not listen

Don’t get me wrong, I think role queue can potentially be good. I personally think that a change that didn’t enforce meta would have been healthier, but I think role queue actually will make games more palatable for solo players.

I also know that I’ve leaned on onetricking myself for most of my competitive career. I play a ton of Mercy and she’s by far my strongest hero. I have no issues with switching, but I know that if I rank as a 2900 Mercy, I am not a 2900 Ana or Lucio. Which is what I’m saying. In a game that requires you to flex, your rank and matchmaking needs to reflect that you can or cannot flex well. OR the game needs to be tweaked in such a way that flexing mid game happens less so that your rank (which is going to be based on your strongest hero) reflects who you actually end up playing in the game.
