MR adding performance mmr

long read but worth it imo.

Overwatch needs to take another page out of rivals’ playbook like hero bans and implement something so completely obvious to anyone who plays the game

Tldr: add performance based mmr in ranked as it will make the game more rewarding and less frustrating by reducing the impact matchmaking issues have on the individual’s match to match experience

What is the biggest issue with the game rn? Obvious to anyone who has queued a game in the last year.

Matchmaking. Poor match quality. Terrible teammates. Stomps

How do you fix that? You cant. You can never make perfect matchmaking. You nor the system can predict what random teammates will or wont do in a match. Its not possible to matchmake ‘balanced’ teams because anyone can do anything at any time. The game can put 10 ‘equal’ players in a game but if someone decides they want to play a different hero than usual, or the hero they usually play doesnt work well in the given situation it all falls apart. No one can predict that

So What can you do? Create systems to help reduce both the likelihood and frustration of those bad matches happening.

In comes performance based mmr where the game actually heavily weighs the amount of rank you gain or lose based on how you played in that match and less on your performance as a team.

What does this do?

Make playing well more rewarding
If you play well and therefore climb faster your time feels more respected as a player. If you play really well but lose, cus you have a leaver or cus you have someone who is dragging the team down etc, you feel less penalised because the game takes into account your performance and drops you less than normal

make playing badly have consequences
If you play badly you should drop. End of story. Someone who is not performing should not be being babied and kept at their rank due to rigged mmr. If someone plays poorly they should be losing way more rank than they currently do.

If this bad performance is a 1 off, just a bad game yknow, then the prior point helps address this case. If 1 game they played really badly but normally theyre good, they may lose a lot of rank that 1 game and they should accept they played badly and take the hit. If every other game they perform well and it was truly 1 bad game then they should bounce back due to how performance based ranking works. If its not a 1 off and they consistently perform badly or are very inconsistent then they shouldnt be being kept at their rank which is what the system currently tries to do. It says they are diamond and tries everything to keep them there despite their gameplay saying otherwise

reduced impact of leaver & throwers
Pretty self explanatory. The more weight is put on how you perform the less impact a leaver or thrower has on your rank. You can have a leaver but if you play well you may only lose 5-10%. This has 0 way of being abused unlike other options for solving leavers like making the team with the leaver not lose any rank. You still lose rank for the loss, the leaver just has less say on how much you lose and more is placed on how you play

less toxicity and avenues of frustration
Pretty logical. Game and rank is more about how you perform. Game is less about how teammates perform. You will have more focus on your gameplay and care less about how your teammates are doing. Less toxicity and frustration toward teammates because what they do or dont do affects your rank less. The 1 trick widow who cant get a kill and loses you the game, as long as you did well your rank will be largely unimpacted from that widows performance. + you will feel great only losing 5-10%, knowing that widow lost 50-60%.

people care more
If your rank is more about your solo performance people will naturally care more about how they play. If someone is playing badly rn there is 0 incentive for them to try. With more performance based ranking suddenly playing poorly actually has consequences and that player is more incentivised to swap or try something different knowing if they keep hard forcing a hero that isnt working etc they will drop massively.

Please for the love of god add something to actually reward player performance and make the game less reliant on randos. Ranked is largely unplayable due to the major swings in match quality from 1 match to the next. I dont feel like my time is respected.

When i sit down to play for 3 hrs, that should be 3 hrs of me trying my best to win and being rewarded for my efforts. Not 3hrs of grafting trying to get 4 other randoms to work together. Trying to get 1 tricks to swap where it clearly isnt working. Losing games in the spawn room because people are not willing to adapt or listen to win the game.

Overwatch already did that in OW1 for awhile. It would have some performance up to platinum, then if you were diamond or higher it was removed.

The reality is that good players already naturally climb. There have been so many unranked to GMs vids over the years showing it. If you were naturally better than your rank, you would on average over many games climb higher than those around you.

The sad reality many of you all don’t want to face is you aren’t that good as you think. Your performance in a game is highly variable nor easily solvable. You can often win games in a variety of strategies that don’t always adhere to ‘norms’

doesnt make much sense for OW given the community basically requested they get rid of it (which they did)

i personally like it as i think performance should factor somehow…but we’ve been there done that

Its not just about rank its about creating a fun and rewarding experience

Ow’s current ranked system is not rewarding. It isnt rewarding to get 3 kills in a fight just for your team to all immediately feed the start of the next engagement and completely undo all your work that won you the previous fight

It isnt rewarding to be doing everything you can but because your tank does not understand playing winston into hog reaper bastion is not going to work no matter how many times he attempts to dive in solo

Not everything is about rank. Its about making an engaging gameplay loop that respects your time and efforts. I can play ow2 for 10hrs and never get a match that i feel respected my time or performance

How many games do you play a week that you feel nothing you did wouldve changed the outcome? Where the game was lost from the start. Or its clear if not for 1 individual youd be having more success

That is like 95% of my match experience rn. It sucks. I shouldn’t end every match stressed because I feel i did everything i could whilst its clear others are just here for the joyride.

It is so unbelievably deflating and at this point on schedule for after a really hard fought win where it was an uphill battle the next game to get a leaver or 1 trick who refuses to adapt and plays poorly losing us the game.

I’ve effectively spent the best part of an hour to get back to where i started and am left with a sour taste in my mouth. Knowing that win we fought for was completely undone by 1 troll just makes me want to stop playing. It is so unbelievably disrespectful to players time imo

Outside of super obviously negative KDAs, stats in OW are pretty useless as a reflection of how you did in a match. Especially when the losing team is often the team with the most healing, for example.

So when Marvels adds “performance based mmr” and matchmaking is still “trash”, what then?

I don’t think you should rank up if you lose. People will just farm stats.

Matchmaking can be trash all it wants, but if i get a loss and because of performance mmr I only lose 5% rank i dont care about the loss lol

Funny how that works huh?

Talk about Literally missing the point of the whole post. Matcnmaking will always be trash. Things like performance based ranking help reduce the frustrations of bad matchmaking

You are trying to fix something that cant be fixed rather than look at ways to make what exists palatable

Overwatch matchmaking is trash now… how do you intend to fix that? You cant. Best you can do is put more power into the players hands

MR also factors in player hours for rank and its matchmaking is far more broken than Overwatch’s. Rivals is a casual game by the devs own omission. I dunno why there’s this constant insistence that Overwatch needs to take a page from them.

The only thing Blizzard needs to do with Overwatch is to not be complacent and be mindful of their competition. But the best way to do that, imo, is to lean into Overwatch’s own identity.

Never said that. If you lose you will lose sr but based on performance it decides how much you lose

If you were the star player on your team, you should lose less than everyone else. How is thar not fair? If you played above the standard of everyone else on the team you should not be at equal fault for the loss.

The more at fault for the loss the more you should lose. Vice versa. The more you contributed to the win the more you should climb.

Thats how a healthy ranked system works. People who perform well climb. People who perform badly fall.

Idiots would have you believe this is how it currently is except you can perform well and constantly lose game after game due to factors outside your control. Vice versa you can climb to ranks you shouldnt be out of pure luck

The problem with that is raw stats don’t tell the entire story of one’s performance. There are other nuances to a player’s performance that the game simply could never track. Things like getting the right kill at the right time, or holding an angle that zones people out, or using a zoning ult, or calling out a target that is low that leads to someone else killing that target.

E.g. a Hanzo player can use Dragon in a clever way that zones the enemy team to a particular position, which could set up kills for his teams. The game is gonna think it’s a bad ult because the Hanzo technically didn’t get any kills with it. But the reality is, the zoning nature of the ult in that moment was instrumental to the kills that it set up.

Another example, I call out a target “Widow on the left high ground” in voice chat. That leads to my Genji killing Widow. The game is just gonna see that as Genji getting the kill and its not gonna recognize that I made the call out.

If you implement rank based on performance, you’re gonna end up with people with inflated ranks that they may not necessarily deserve. Worse still, it will probably incentivize people farming stats over doing more ethereal strategies like calling out targets.

Absolutely not.

We’ve had it in Overwatch 1 and it was truly awful. If it comes back, I’m done with competitive. It’s a deeply flawed and impractical concept.

If you want to farm statistics, you can do that in other games. Even single player ones.

And if they win the game because of that the hanzo player still gains rank…

I dont see the issue here

If the hanzo does this and they still lose the game and this is the only thing the hanzo did I would argue then clearly that was not a good play cus they still lost lol

Literally sounds perfect to me. Hanzo zones and gets the win for the team. He gets sr

Hanzo zones with ult and does ultimately nothing all game and they lose. He loses sr.

If using zoning ults is all hanzo did all game and he has 0 kills he shouldnt climb lol. If he has kills as well then he will

It works perfectly imo

Sounds like your trying to find holes in a good system when the vast majority of the time it’s a straight up improvement

And if you win the game because you have the most damage on the team, then you still gain rank.

And if the only thing you did was get a 4k in one particular instance and nothing else, and you still lost, then that wasn’t a good play.

Great. This also applies to any other action you do in the game.

Exactly as it is now.

People who perform better in a team environment win more games and climb. People who are worse lose more games and fall.

In a game like overwatch there is far more complexity to it than who has the most healing or who can remech the most times as Dva. The single best metric to decide a player’s skill is how much they win. The better a player is the more ways they find to win. It’s that simple and nothing else matters.

Yea… because you won… r u stupid?

Yes. If the only thing you did was get a 4k and nothing else thats likely why you lost lol. Performance mmr sees that and youd drop rank

I dont think you understand how performance mmr works lol

If all someone does is get a 4k once and they lose the game, they will lose a lot of sr. If someone gets a 4k once and wins they will win a small amount of sr

Thats how it works lol

Then they don’t need to change anything. If they factor raw stats into rank, it’ll lead to inflated ranks.

Literally false lol

You can win games simply because the enemy have a leaver. That doesnt make the team who won more skillful than the team who lost

Winning or losing does not equate to skill. They are mutually exclusive from each other. you can be high skill and lose games you can be low skill and win games

Wins and losses have 0 correlation to skill

Stats also do not equate to skill though.

Performance does equate to skill actually

The better you play the more skilled you are lol?

You stupid or something?
